what’s going on in the lives of Trojans?

For our August DCM, our Lieutenant Governor Tina had the pleasure of hosting it at Oso De Oro Park which was absolutely beautiful, clean, quiet and safe. It was a very great location to have our DCM. For this month’s DCM, we had a potluck and everyone who attended brought fantastic food and beverages that we all enjoyed. We were served with food such as chicken, pizza and many homemade foods also. Our Club Secretary, Virginia Zamarripas, and our Club President, Ellen Phetsa, were both representatives of McLane High School and attended the potluck together along with our Faculty Advisor, Mr. Rios.

At the meeting, we had the pleasure of meeting new members who have come all the way from Livingston, CA to be with us that day. We started the meeting by discussing many details about the upcoming events that the division will be participating in and were also introduced to many ways McLane can help. We reviewed about the upcoming event that is the Region Training Conference (RTC) which will be held in Livingston, California this year. LTG Tina gave us more in depth information about what the event was for and the activities that will be held there, such as a dance to Eliminate at the end of the day.

Also, we all together started to discuss about Club Rush ideas for our school. Every club and school went around talking about their previous Club Rush idea and what they did to attract more students to wanting to join Key Club. As the President for KC at McLane, I speak for both my secretary and I when I say that because of this discussion, it helped give us a lot more ideas and ways to begin Club Rush this school year! Tina also ended with talking to us about our huge event, Fall Rally, that will be taking place at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and how fundraising will really benefit us when it comes to transportation to there. We all are so excited to be attending this year!

Tina ended the meeting with moving on to talk about Recognitions for people and clubs who have done an outstanding job. She introduced Club of the Month, Members of the Month and Officer of the Month for the months of July and August. On my behalf of McLane Key Club and all the officers I am very excited and honored to say that McLane won Club of the Month for the month of August! We are very happy that our LTG felt that we have deserved the award.

Overall, this month’s DCM was great! Everyone made new friends and got to know people from other schools and even other towns! I’m glad that we got to attend on behalf of McLane High School; it gave us a lot information about upcoming events and helped us create better ideas on how to attract students to Key Club for the new school year!

FEATURED ARTICLES continued.

On July 4th, Kingsburg Key Club volunteered at the Kiwanis Ice Cream booth and provided service by giving ice cream to children! It was crazy and fun to work at, yet very busy, loud, and…sticky of course! However, this was a great experience working with our Kiwanis Advisors, Mr. and Mrs. Nyberg, Brett Peters, and a lot of other amazing people. At the event, we learned a lot of things such as communication, calculation, and the joy we bring to the children when we give them their ice cream. Thus, we didn’t feel like we were working at all, it was more of like we were doing something helpful for some great cause such as PTP. The hours flew by fast when everyone was making new friends, laughing, and having a good time. It is a fact that when we’re working with really great people for a long amount of time, we learn a thing or two about one another. For example, one of our advisors, Mr. Nyberg, he sings amazing! And how did we find out? Well while we were working at the booth for Kingsburg High School’s firework show, he was the one who sang the National Anthem in front of hundreds of people! That was awesome!

While getting to know others, we got to see people that have been in Kingsburg for many years by the way they ask for a “double scoop” ice cream instead of three scoops of ice cream. By observing different combinations of ice cream, we realized that maybe a lot of other people do share the same interests in ice cream as much as us. Here it is, doing community service isn’t something to do to just get it done with nor a hard load of work, we all are able to enjoy it by seeing the joy from others, the receivers. That is what it’s all about. That is how we understand service. Doing great things for our community and raising money for charity can be fun and such an invigorating experience.

A few weeks ago, the Kingsburg Key Club volunteered at Kingsburg's annual summer event, Music in the Park. During the event, Kingsburg band alumni come together and put on a free evening show for the town, featuring collections from movies such as, "Star Wars." Through the evening, the town is able together as one, and eat, sit back and enjoy the show. Along with volunteering the park, the board members had their annual summer board meeting, and a successful one might we add! Served and hosted by our wonderful advisors Pauline and Maury Nyberg, each officer was able to chime in her ideas for the school year. Collaboratively, we came up with dates, fundraiser, and volunteer opportunities including working with kids and selling Christmas-grams during the holidays. The team is fulfilling it's Cali-Nev-Ha name, we are definitely busy "bees"!
