Securityguard blessedwith car
JAMEY GORDON
A stranger handed over the keys of his car
to Vetus Schola security/car guard Andr
Pepo, patrolling at De Helderbosch Kwik-
spar in Somerset West, with these words:
Idontknowyou,butGodknowsyou.And,
He sent me to you.
According to Pepo, this blessing followed af-
ter he embarked on a 45-day journey in prayer
duringwhichheaskedGodtoprovidehimwith
a car, which he was desperately in need of.
Pepo, who is originally from the Democratic
Republic of Congo and lives in Firgrove with
his wife and three children, says having a car
would enable them to get to and from work, go
on outings, and attend church services in
Woodstockwithoutmakinguseof public trans-
port and putting the lives of his family at risk.
However, they just do not have the money
to finance a car.
DistrictMail has confirmed the donation
with the anonymous benefactor, a Somerset
West resident who does not want his identity
to be made known. In a telephonic interview
earlier this week, the man said he had given
his car to Pepo because it was something God
laid on my heart.
My family and I were once blessed with a
car, and it is such a great feelingwhen some-
one blesses you with something you know
you might never afford. Also, we could do
it since we are getting a new car.
Pepo says he started praying on Tuesday
15October2013forGodtomakeaway.Dur-
ing his last and final prayer around 03:00 on
Sunday 1 December he told God: You creat-
ed the heavens and make everything possi-
ble. You have to make it happen today.
Thatmorning atwork, Pepo says a Somer-
set West resident, who often pops in at the
Kwikspar, approached him at around 11:00.
Pepo says the man asked him if he could
drive towhichheansweredYes. However,
since Pepo did not have a South African ID
and only a Congolese drivers license, the
man askedwhether he has a friend or broth-
er with an ID, to which Pepo replied Yes.
Theman toldme to get photocopies ofmy
brothers ID so that he could put the car on
my brothers name. The next day (Monday)
I gave him the copies and he askedme to give
himtwodays tosorteverythingout,explains
Pepo.
At 19:00 onThursday 5December, theman
camebackandhandedmethekeysandpapers
for what is now my white Opel Monza.
Pepo recalls bursting into tears and asking
the man, Why did you give this car to me
a man you do not know when there are
so many other people suffering?.
Pepo, whose brother drives the car on his
behalf, says that nothing like this has ever
happened tohimorhis familyand thathenow
feels more than blessed. Every day I thank
God and pray that He not only continues to
blessmyfamily,butalsothemanandhis fami-
ly. Im so very happy with the car. I couldnt
have asked for better.

Visitors flock toHelderbergbeaches
DALEEN FOUCH
TheHelderbergwasahubof activity over
the festive season, with the Strand and
Gordons Bay beaches packedwith locals
and tourists.
Great weather was the major drawcard at
local beaches and some business owners are
labelling this thebestholidayseasoninmany
years. Despite the large number of visitors,
no drownings or serious incidents were re-
ported.
Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson
for the Strand police, says many children
wentmissing at the beach onNewYearsDay
but all were unitedwith their families on the
same day.
According to Senior Superintendent An-
drew Ball from the Cape Town Metro Police,
the volumes of beach-goers in theHelderberg
coastline increased compared to previous
years. Metro Police confiscated large vol-
umes of alcohol from local beaches. A total
of 467 bottles of alcohol were confiscated be-
tween 23 November and Monday 8 January,
with 158 fines issued.
Johan Middleton, councillor for the Gor-
dons Bay area, says the perfect weather
drove the surge in visitors to local beaches.
He says that although the beacheswere dirty
after the busy days, theywere very promptly
cleaned by city staff. He says the only com-
plaint he received is that too few dustbins
were available on the beaches.
Stuart Pringle chairperson of subcouncil
8, says he is relieved that there were no
drownings at local beaches. This is not be-
cause fewer people brought alcohol to the
beaches, he says, but rather because of strict-
er law enforcement.
AnnemarieFrick, ownerofTheReefBeach

paredtolastyear, fewerdrunkpeopleentered

Jeanette Loring, amember of theGordons

tourism is the pro-active attitude of business
owners and their initiatives to create aware-
ness about the town as a holiday destination.
She complimented the City of Cape Town on
being prepared for the festive season and giv-

Poorpostal deliverya cause for concern
For more than two years I have
had to complain to Mr Scheepers
at Strand Postal Delivery Depot.
Postmen continually put my
post in my neighbours (9 Hope
Street) postbox and his post inmy
box (9A Hope Street).
Since Sept 2011, I have com-
plained about: Owen (September
2011), Marvin (November 2011),
Tembisa (July 2012) and Tammy
Claasens (December 2013).
Such an erratic service is a
nightmare, doctors accounts, etc.
just never arrive.
Impresently expectingaparcel
from my grandchild in Germany,
butfoundacollectionslipforareg-
istered letter addressed to my
neighbour in my postbox yester-
day.
I have no idea where my collec-
tion slip for my parcel might be.
I phoned Lucille at Strand Post
Office but she was unable to help
and referred me to Mr Scheepers.
According to Mr Scheepers the
problem is that postmen rotate
every two months.
If a postman can read, surely he
should know the difference be-
tween 9 and 9A and the difference
between 9 Hope Street and 9 Pas-
teur Street.
I suggest that the SAPost Office
paysparticularattentiontoselect-
ing suitably qualified employees,
as these incompetent souls are
funded by the SA taxpayer.
Your very urgent attention to
this problem would be greatly ap-
preciated. Kindly inform me of
your intended action.

Bouquetsof thanks for somespecial people
As we enter 2014 with hopes and
wishes for a good year, I would
like to present a few special bou-
quets of thanks.
Firstly, thank you to our inter-
esting Helderberg newspapers.
Get aDistrictMail or any of our
other local papers, free or pur-
chased, and more often than not,
a lovely picture of our magnifi-
cent scenery or pleasant event
will immediately delight the eye.
I know bad news has to be re-
ported and shown, but thank
goodness it is rarely emblazoned
on the front page.
Keep up the good work.
Anotherbig thankyoubouquet
for our excellent pharmacists, es-
pecially the team at my phar-
macy in Gordons Bay.
Sometimes one expects the im-
possible from our medicine-
men/woman and unreasonable
bitterness is feltwhen theunfore-
seen happens.
As one of their older clients, I
havehadmanyyears of their gen-
uine, caring service.
September 2013 saw the tenth
anniversary ofmy late husbands
last fight with the awful cancer
Mesotheleoma.
I placed a letter in the
DistrictMail after he died, thank-
ing them for their deep concern
for him to be pain-free in his final
months.
The pharmacy owner and his
colleague would, if necessary,
personallydelivermedication for
my husband no matter how bad
the weather.
He and his present team are
still just as caring.
The last bouquet for now is for
a member of that special team,
our expectant mother, Anne-
marie, who diligently dispatches
my monthly amount of medica-
tion to me. Her baby is due soon
so our prayers and wishes are
that babys arrival will be a truly
happy event.

Fishing rights
shock for
newyear
While most Helderberg residents
are looking forward to 2014, there
are many others who fear just what
this year has in store for them.
Among those who are worried
about the forthcoming year are the
many Strand professional line
fishermen who may have their pro-
fessional fishing licences revoked.
The loss of a licence will have
many far-reaching and devastating
effects for a professional fisherman.
It is not only the fishermen who
will be affected, but also their crew
members, their families, the
communities in which they live as
well as the hawkers to whom they
sell fish.
These fishermen, their fathers
and their grandfathers have been
fishing all their lives and this is the
only profession that they know.
For them to now try find another
means of making a living will be al-
most impossible.
After a meeting between the pro-
fessional line fishermen and repre-
sentatives of the Department of Ag-
riculture, Forestry and Fishe-
ries (DAFF) in Cape Town on
Tuesday, it was decided to give the
professional line fishermen an ex-
ceptionwhile theappealprocesswas
taking place. During which time
theycouldcontinue fishingusing in-
terim fishing licences.
Butwhatwill happenafter this pe-
riod is anyones guess.
Goodpeopleof the

I want to thank two good Samaritans
who helped me when I needed it.

but could not change the tyremyself be-
cause I am elderly.

skunk to an unused birdcage that
they placed in their Bantam-bakkie
overnight.
Venter says that although they
wereveryexcitedabout their find,
they did not know the first thing
abouthow to care for the animal and
phoned the SPCA.
Themanwhowas sent out to our
hometocollectour skunk informed
us that it was not a skunk but was
actually a very rare African striped
weasel, said Venter.
However, according to Justin
Lawrence, a spokesperson for Cape
Nature, African striped weasels
have over the last 30 years become
increasingly widespread in the
Western Cape and thewestern parts
of the Northern Cape.
There have been numerous
records from the Helderberg area
over the last two decades, with seve-
ral found in gardens where they are
most likely chasing their preferred
prey small mammals.
Theyare ideally suited topursue
these due to their extremely slender
bodies and short legs, said Law-
rence, who reckons this particular
onewas probably on the hunt for ro-
dents.
Lawrence implores anyone who
comes into contact with an African
striped weasel to leave it alone, un-
less it is injured.
Beingmustelids the same fami-
ly as ratels, otters and polecats
they are very aggressive if confron-
ted, so be extremely cautious, said
Lawrence.
He says dogs are inclined to ha-
rass and sometimes kill these ani-
mals, so they should be kept away.
Shouldoneof theseweaselsbe found
dead, it should be reported, or prefe-
rably taken to the nearest Cape Na-
ture office.
Lawrence added that although
these animals are increasing their
rangeandnumbers, theyarestillnot
common and therefore locality
records and genetic samples are
most valuable to them.
RARE FIND: This African striped
weasel was discovered by Max, a
husky, in the garden of Strand resi-
dents Bea Venter and John Lubbe
on Christmas morning.
BRAAI MASTERS: Local braai enthusiasts from
Gordons Bay broke the Guinness World
Record for the longest barbecue marathon
last week at the Cheeky Monkey Restaurant
at Monkey Town. The team started the Mara-
thon at 10:00 on Friday 3 January and fin-
ished soon after 18:00 on Saturday, a total of
30 hours, beating the previous record of 28
hours by two people from Switzerland. The
meat and vegetables were donated to Harris
House and Huis Soeterus. The team, with
their nicknames are (from left), Chris Ingram
(Vitalstatistix), Nino Messina (Asterix), Wayne
Gerard (Log-istics), Marike Myburg (Energetix)
and Odette Maytham (Rubberduckerix), Louis
Venter (Braaiometrix) is absent. The sponsors
were Gareth Perkins of B3-IT Solutions who
supplied the CCTV cameras and Warren Lewis
from GBay Internet who supplied broadband
internet for live streaming and support.

Iwouldliketowishallourreaders
and anglers a happy new year.
Unfortunately it may not be a hap-
py year for a large number of profes-
sional fishermen whose skippers li-
cences have been revoked. The fami-
lies of these fishermen rely on being
fedandclothedbymeansof theirhus-
bands catching fish and have been
bitterly disappointed with the news
ofthemanylicenceswhichhavebeen
revoked.
It is estimated that a large number
of licenses are involved and that the
authorities have allotted many of
these licenses to persons
that do not rightfully
qualify and do not have
theexperience toqualify
for fishing licenses.
One of a number of or-
derly demonstrations
was recently held along-
side the Strand slipway.
It was verywell directed
by the traffic officials
and police.
When the press and
SABCwereaddressedby
Gavin Roux, the spokes-
person that represented
thelocal fishingfraterni-
ty,somewivesofthefish-
ermen present voiced their disgust
and shock that the authorities could
even contemplate revoking licences
asitwouldtakeawaytheir livelihood
and the present economic situation
insures no likelihood of other em-
ployment or grants.
The boat owner/skippers that fish
and employ all these fishermen have
steadilyinvestedandputalltheirsav-
ings into these boats, engines, track-
ing equipment and towing vehicles
which will now be redundant.
Another disappointing move, up-
settingmany surf anglers, is that the
entrance toMacassarbeachhasbeen
completely blocked off for fishing ve-
hiclesmakingitverydifficult tomon-
itor trek netting.
Local rock and surf angling was
marred by high tides, strangeweath-
er and flocks of holidaymakers occu-
pying the beachesmaking it difficult
for fishermen to fish.
A number of small- and medium-
size kob were reported. One of the
best catches reported during the fes-
tive seasonwas a 2kg elf caught from
the Island in front of Blakes.
IreceivedanotherreportfromHen-
nie Beukes of some kob
he caught on the Strand
reefs on Saturday.
Small boats that
braved the weather
caught kob, elf and
blacktail (dassie). There
havealsobeenreports of
snoek from Rocky Bank
area and yellowtail and
katonkel near Cape
Point.
The temperature at
Strand and other places
was 20 to 21 C.
The snoek caught
there were not in good
conditiondue to the tem-
perature of the water deteriorated
pidly.
News fromWillie Geldenhuys and

went to the dumping ground beyond
the Canyon in the deep on Friday for
tunnytheywereverysurprisedtosee
so many bait fish present.
Williementionedthefactthatthou-
sands of bonito (skipjack) were
present on top of the water. When he
switched off his boat engines there
were shoals of bonito flipping and
shimmering on the water. The fish
sizes varied between 4kg and 5kg.
He added that the yellowfin tunny
were present but were reluctant to
take lures due to all the bait fish
present.Onlyonetunnyof45kgwas
hooked but unfortunately lost while
gaffing.Theyhad11bonito (skipjack)
in total.
The fuel for this trip was R2 700
whichmade itandexpensivebutalso
very worthwhile.
Patrick Christodoulou who also
fished theCanyon area fromhis boat
Magoofta on Saturday was more for-
tunate he had five yellowfin tunny.
Allan du Plessis reported that on
Saturday he and his crew caught
snoek, yellowtail and katonkel close
to Cape Point and Rocky Bank. Also
on Saturday the keen youngster Jan-
dre Geldenhuys accompanied Steve
Eales at Rocky Bank. They caught
snoek and yellowtail.
Spinner men must be on the look-
out for tunnyoffRooikranzdue to the
water temperature being 21 C at the
Point.
