It is especially gratifying that the partnership between the Tourism Council of Zambia and the Zambia Tourism Board is growing in strength and I have all the confidence that this will ultimately yield positive results for tourism in Zambia. The publication of Destination Zambia is but one of the products of this partnership.

The partnership of Zambia Tourism Board and Zambia Tourism Council was demonstrated as we jointly embarked on the rebranding exercise of the “Zambia, The Real Africa” brand slogan and the logo, in order to position Zambia as a tourism destination of choice. My Ministry believes the new

Victoria Falls. I am especially pleased that we have embraced technological developments and that you the reader can read and pass on an electronic copy of the publication to others.

In fact, there is so much to see and do that no visit is really long enough in a vast country covering over 750,000 sq km and stretching 1,200 km east to west and 815 km north to south. around a third of Zambia’s total land area is set aside as national park or as game-managed area.

In the past, Zambia’s tourism focus was mostly centred on The Victoria Falls – the Mosi-oa-tunya,

Zambia is for those that like it wild. This is africa in the raw – a country largely undiscovered by mass tourism yet offering some of the continent’s greatest attractions.

Zambia is natural wonders, broad horizons, game-rich parks, uncongested open highways stretching out across the land from the capital lusaka and the broad smiles of some of africa’s friendliest people.

Those who visit Zambia leave enriched by the expe-rience and eager to return. as the chairman of the Zambia tourism Board (ZtB), when quoting a local saying, has previously said: ‘He or she that drinks

or “The smoke that Thunders’”in the local language. The Falls are often included in the 10 top-ten sights to see or one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It is an incomparable attraction.

livingstone, the Zambian gateway to the smoke that Thunders and africa’s adventure capital, hosts an impressive range of activities to tack on to a visit to the Falls. choose from helicopter and micro-light trips over the Falls, white-water rafting, sundowner cruises, terrifying 111-metre bungee jumping and gorge swings from The Victoria Falls Bridge, fine-dining train excursions and two absorbing museums – the david livingstone and the railway. not to forget, the recently refurbished livingstone royal golf & country that dates from edwardian times.

SpECTACULAR

without wishing to undersell either The Victoria Falls or livingstone and acknowledging that no trip to Zambia is quite complete without a visit to africa’s greatest natural attraction, there is lots more to see – even in terms of almost-as spectacular and little visited waterfalls.

Zambia’s game-viewing is on par with the best in africa and its parks continue to improve in terms of animal densities and the quality and number of camps and lodges in and around them. aside from the most visited areas of south luangwa (famed for its walking safaris) and lower Zambezi (with hard-fighting tigerfish), there are 17 or so other parks scattered across the nation.

a few of these parks need further development but others are truly superb. There are also animals largely endemic to one park such as Thornicraft’s giraffe in south luangwa, cookson’s wildebeest in north luangwa, brown lechwe (in Kafue), black

the man-made expanse of lake Kariba and its resort hotels in the south-west, Zambia has lots to offer.

In the desire to see The Victoria Falls or to reach a far-away game park, many visitors overlook the delights of lusaka. This is a carefully planned and beautifully laid out city with broad and shady

lechwe (in the Bangweulu wetlands) and sitatunga in Kasanka. while Mosi-oa-tunya national Park has Zambia’s only, albeit very small, rhino population. Many bird species are also to be found in just one or two parks and nowhere else.

so visitors need to visit more than one park to really appreciate all that Zambia has to offer in terms of wildlife and birdlife.

SURpRiSiNG

a surprising aspect to Zambia – a landlocked country – is water. From the fine and deserted sandy beaches alongside remote lake tanganyika in the north to

tree-lined avenues and one that reflects the current success of the Zambian economy, as new shopping malls and international class hotels take their place alongside the fine colonial-style buildings that still dot the city centre.

Then there’s golf. There are several courses throughout the country (11 with 18 holes and 12 with only nine), most notably the lusaka golf club, and the excellent ndola golf club.

lastly, there are Zambia’s people. Friendly, welcoming and ready to assist any visitor, Zambians themselves comprise the final piece in the jigsaw and help to make Zambia a truly unforgettable destination.

and the rainforests of southern and central africa. subsequently there is an enormous diversity in habi-tats, including swamp forest, wet grassland, plains, forested rivers and miombo woodland.

WiLdLiFE

despite heavy poaching during the 1970s and 1980s, Kasanka’s game numbers are healthy. There are many different species of antelope as well as resident herds of elephant, pods of hippo and the occasional leopard. Visitors also have the opportunity to see the rare and shy swamp-dwelling sitatunga.

a sensational place for bird watching, Kasanka is famed for its astonishing 400 bird species, including

kasanka National Park, in north-west Zambia, is one of the only places on Earth to see a fruit bat migration.

This small, delightful, privately managed park is best known for its straw-coloured fruit bat colony that migrates to the park from mid-october until december. The abundant seasonal fruits, such as wild loquat and waterberries, attract over eight million bats, and as a result, visitors flock to the park to watch this unusual spectacle.

Being part of the congo Basin, Kasanka is located between the dryer landscapes found in eastern africa

such exotics as the Pel’s fishing owl, african finfoot, half-collared kingfisher, purple-breasted cuckoo-shrike, lady’s ross’ and schallow’s turaco, pennant-winged nightjar and Bohm’s bee-eater.

KASANKATRUST

Kasanka trust runs the park and the proceeds from visitors go directly into area’s conservation and devel-opment, as well as surrounding communities. as a privately run charity Kasanka is entirely dependant on tourists and donations. The trust employs locally recruited scouts who, along with senior wardens, control illegal hunting, road maintenance, bush fire prevention. They also support rural health care, the renovation of local schools, conservation education and the promotion of scientific research.

ACCommodATioNKasanka trust runs two camps within the park; wasa camp, which overlooks lake wasa, and luwombwa camp, on the banks of the luwombwa river. More hardened travellers, or those on a budget, may prefer to stay at one of the two camp-sites within the park, which are located at Kabwe and Pontoon. shoebill camp is also managed by the trust and is located 150 km, 6-7 hours drive, north of Kasanka in the Bangweulu wetlands.

ACTiviTiES

Kasanka’s most renowned spectacle is the fruit bats and the park offers two guided walk options per day (one early morning, when the bats return to their nests before sunrise, the other in the late afternoon, when the bats prepare for their night flight). no special fitness levels are required for these walks – the distance to the hides, where the bats can be viewed, is around 500 metres and the climb into the hides is around 20 metres up wooden ladders.

There is a variety of ways to experience Kasanka’s wildlife, including game drives, night drives, bush walks, guided bird walks, boat and canoe trips and fishing. Visitors can also take day trips to the Bang-weulu wetlands. Bangweulu is one of the biggest marsh areas in africa and home to the endangered and odd-looking shoebill stork.

Kasanka is the nearest base for a trip to the david livingstone Memorial which is situated around 30 km to the northern side of the park. The nsala caves are also nearby and contain some of africa’s finest rock paintings. The primitive artworks in these caves is said to be 20,000 years old. There are also the dramatic Kundalila close to the edge of the Muchingo escarpment where the Kuombe river tumbles 65 metres into a pool.

GETTiNGTHERE

There are two airstrips within the park – chikufwe and new Mulembo. It takes one and half hours by plane from lusaka or one from Mfuwe. By car, it takes between five and six hours to get to Kasanka from lusaka.

shumba camp is named after a pride of lions, which are found in the area. game viewing is possible from each tent or from the camp’s main deck.

SoUTHLUANGWANATioNALpARK

south luangwa offers a different experience from Kafue and a chance to see species not easily seen elsewhere. wilderness safaris operate one camp in the park, which is located in the south, making the most of the park’s individual attributes.

Kalamu lagoon camp: located south of the luangwa river, the camp lies under a canopy of giant ebony trees overlooking a beautiful lagoon. eight safari tents provide a wonderful base for this nature-lover’s paradise.

KAFUENATioNALpARK

northern Kafue contains the Busanga Plains, an area about as wild as you can get in today’s world. This remote, vast and diverse location contains three wilderness safaris’ camps.

Busanga Bush camp: The camp lies in the heart of the Busanga with views of the seasonal floodplains and extends to the horizon. The camp is nestled in an island of fig trees and can accommodate eight guests in four well-appointed tents.

Kapinga camp: Kapinga has four luxury safari tents and lies on the edge of an island of trees. The camp, which has been designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, overlooks the Kafue plains.

Livingstone International AirportLocated just 5 km from the nation’s tourism capital and 15 km from the Victoria Falls, Livingstone International Airport was built in 1950 for a predominantly domestic market. The infrastructure has been upgraded, however, in a major redevel-opment by NACL to meet the growing needs of the tourism sector. A new international terminal building is under construction and the runway length has been extended to 3 km.

Mfuwe International Airport Mfuwe International Airport opened in the 1970s as a domestic airport serving the South Luangwa National Game Park. It has since gained international status and now serves over 20 lodges and campsites.

Zambezi Airlines has built a reputation for excellent in-flight service as a full service airline, based on the Zambian hospitality. The company is the first Zambian carrier to operate the 500 version of the popular 737, which they lease from GECAS.

TEChNOLOGY

Configured for 12 premier business class and 99 economy class seating, the airline’s aircraft are powered by new technology, fuel-efficient CFM 56 engines which also offer passengers a quieter cabin.

Jetworx (formerly Saftech) in Johannesburg main-tains the two aircraft, which were joined by a third 737-500 in June 2010, which is a Boeing Aircraft Company and Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved maintenance facility.

Zambezi airlines commenced operations as a domestic carrier in 2008, serving the

main Zambian cities and towns of ndola, kitwe, livingstone, Solwezi and chipata with a 30-seat Embraer brasilia 120 turboprop aircraft.

Within days of the launch, the airline signed a contract with GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) for the lease of two Boeing 737-500 aircraft. The two aircraft were delivered to Lusaka in May 2009, enabling the airline to launch daily flights between Lusaka and Johannesburg, Ndola and Johannesburg and later thrice weekly flights between Lusaka and Dar es Salaam. The airline now also flies to harare and Lubumbashi. By mid 2011 routes between Cape Town and Livingstone will also be operated thrice weekly.

Zambezi Airlines employs highly trained pilots. Most of the cockpit crew have between 38 to 20 years experience after training at some of the world’s top flight training schools, at Oxford, hamble and Perth. They undergo regular training at the FAA approved British Airways/Comair training facility in Johannesburg.

As a capital city, Lusaka dates only from the mid 1930s when the colonial authorities of the

time decided to move the seat of government from Livingstone to a more central location. Lusaka, then just a stop on the main railway line, seemed the ideal location – and few would argue that this was an inspired decision.

Since then, Lusaka has grown into an elegant and thriving capital with broad, tree-lined avenues and fine colonial-style buildings.

Zambia’s strong economic growth in the past decade has drawn in people from across the country. As a result, Lusaka is now one of Africa’s fastest growing and most economically vibrant cities.

Running parallel with the original railway line is Cairo Road, still very much the city’s main thor-oughfare, lined with office buildings, hotels and shops of every description.

In recent times, however, the focus of commercial activity has shifted towards Great East Road with the opening of the impressive and recently expanded Manda Hill and Arcades shopping malls. Manda Hills, in particular, has some impressive fashion and sports stores. In addition, the city is dotted with traditional bustling markets selling everything from curios to spare engine parts.

DEVELOPMENT

The Mulungushi International Conference Centre on Great East Road attracts major international meetings and events to Lusaka. Most of the recent hotel development has also been in this area, which has good access to Lusaka International Airport.

The airport itself continues to grow, with new airlines and an enhanced network of services to other regional destinations such as Windhoek and Gabo-rone. The airport is free of congestion and easy to use.

Lusaka’s hotels cater mostly for visiting executives and those overnighting in the city before or after a safari. Alternatively, looking beyond Lusaka, tourists can choose from a selection of small, but high quality, lodges offering bush-style accommoda-tion but within easy reach of the city. a SaNCTuary Of NaTuraL BEauTyhaving been overlooked for many years,

Lower zambezi National Park is now one of zambia’s premier parks. This 4,092 sq km park and its associated Game management areas (Gmas) lie on the north bank of the zambezi river, facing zimbabwe’s mana Pools National Park. The river is flanked by vast flood plains dotted with acacias and other large trees.

NATIONAL PARK

Until 1983, when it was declared a national park, this area was the private game reserve of the Zambian president. As a result, it has avoided the ravages of mass tourism and remains one of Africa’s few pristine wilderness areas.

The riverbank is scattered with a selection of first-rate camps and lodges, some inside the park and others outside in the GMA and beyond. In addition

to excellent game drives, they offer game viewing from river craft as well as canoeing and fishing.

Flights to the park land either at Jeki Airstrip or Royal Zambezi Airstrip. In the peak season, Pro-flight Zambia operates daily flights from Lusaka, Mfuwe and Livingstone.

Owing to popular demand, some of the lodges now cater as much for fishing as they do for safaris and birdwatching. The Zambezi has plenty of tigerfish, catfish and bream. Within the national park and under its strict return policy, all fish must be put back in the river once caught.

OPPORTUNITIES

There is less animal diversity than in the other big parks, but visitors have great opportunities to get close to the game wandering in and out of the

Zambezi channels. The park is noted especially for its large herds of elephant, which appear to domi-nate the water’s edge, and also for its huge hippo pods, basking crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Away from the river, visitors can also see lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck, kudu, zebra, impala and warthog.

Redcliff Zambezi Lodge extends to about 100 hectares with 1.5 km of river frontage. The lodge can accommodate up to 16 guests. Four tent-roofed chalets (each with two beds) and two family chalets (each with four beds) are furnished with beautiful indigenous teak.

Each chalet has large, comfortable beds and mosquito nets and en suite facilities, including shower, toilet, hot and cold running water. Solar panels are used to charge 12 volt batteries for major lighting needs, while pathways and chalets

GamE VIEWING GaLOrE IN LuaNGWa VaLLEyThe Luangwa Valley represents one of southern

africa’s finest game viewing experiences, with dense animal concentrations and a comparatively open landscape.

The valley comprises three separate national parks: the popular and easy-to-reach 9,050 sq km South Luangwa National Park; the much less visited and smaller 4,636 sq km North Luangwa National Park; and the tiny 300 sq km Luambe National Park.

South Luangwa is probably Zambia’s best known and most frequently visited national park. It is served by Mfuwe Airport, which receives daily flights from Lusaka. South Luangwa enjoys high densities of game,

including frequent leopard sightings, and the park is home to an endemic subspecies, Thornicraft’s giraffe.

In the dry season, the animals concentrate along the western bank of the Luangwa River. In fact, the entire Luangwa ecosystem is supported by the ebb and flow of the Luangwa River, which floods the surrounding land in the rainy season.

High standards of service and accommodation, top quality guiding and a comparative absence of visitors combine to make South Luangwa a real favourite. There are seasonal bush camps

throughout the park, plus a selection of more permanent accommodation just outside the main entrance. The newly opened Protea Hotel Chipata is on the outskirts of Chipata, three hours’ drive from South Luangwa. North Luangwa, also on the bank of the Luangwa River, has a few seasonal bush camps and is perfect for those seeking a real wilderness experience, off the beaten track, where visitors encounter little or no human presence. North Luangwa has one or two subspecies, such as Cookson’s wildebeest and Craw-shay’s zebra, not normally found in its larger sister park to the south. It also has some well protected black rhino.

Bilimungwe is a trail camp nestled in a riverine forest along the picturesque banks of the Luangwa River. The camp is set in a remote and unspoilt area and an ideal base for walking safaris.

Buffalo is a seasonal bush camp in North Luangwa National Park – one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas left in Africa.

The Park is renowned for its enormous herds of buffalo and its numerous other species of wildlife and bird life.

The camp is open from early June until early November. The recommended stay is from three to five nights.

It is situated some 100 km off the Great North Road but is also accessible by air and there is an airstrip just 12 km from the camp.

The camp comprises five en-suite guest chalets. Three of the chalets are built on stilts, over looking the Mwaleshi River. The area is predominately for walking safaris but the camp offers limited game and night drives.

Croc Valley Camp is an affordable boutique lodge which caters for the budget traveller as well as offering a self-catering and full board experience. A quaint new exclusive tourist facility, the camp was renovated in 2005 and is set in an oasis of calm along the bank of the Luangwa river.

The camp fits effortlessly into the surrounding riverine habitat with fantastic views and it is not uncommon to see elephants crossing the river and strolling through the camp on a regular basis. Between safaris, in the midday heat, the

Kakuli is a seasonal camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa Rivers.

Situated in the Luamfwa Concession in South Luangwa National Park, Kalamu Tented Camp takes its name from the adjacent Chankalamu River, a seasonal tributary of the Luangwa.

Lion Camp, overlooking Lion Lagoon, is one of the few privileged lodges to be situated deep inside the South Luangwa National Park – one of the finest game and bird viewing wilderness areas in Southern Africa.

Luwi Bushcamp is a seasonal camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon.

Accommodation is in four huts made of grass and thatch with polished mud floors. A small thatch provides shade over the bar area. Daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees with a view of the grassy plain that normally attracts an abundance of wildlife, whilst dinner is taken under the stars accompanied by the sounds of the African night.

Nkwali Camp is located on Robin Pope’s private land overlooking the Luangwa River and the National Park. Located 12 km north of Tena Tena, Nsefu was Zambia’s first photographic safari camp and, today, is still one of only two camps in this part of South Luangwa.

NATiONAL pARk OFFERS diVERSiTY ANd dRAmAThe kafue National park environment is prob-

ably the most dramatic and scenic in Zambia. Spanning three Zambian provinces, it is also one of Africa’s largest parks, covering 22,400 sq km.

Kafue holds possibly the greatest diversity of wildlife of any national park in Africa. In recent years, the Zambian authorities have earmarked Kafue as an area for sympathetic development. As a result, there has been a small, well managed growth in the number of safari camps and lodges operating in the park. Because of its

vast size, however, Kafue remains largely undeveloped as a game-viewing destination and in many respects it is still an untouched wilderness. In fact, 67 per cent of the park is still designated as restricted wilderness where only walking safaris can be conducted.

WOODLAND

Miombo woodland dominates the landscape of Kafue and the park is dissected roughly north to south by the broad, slow-flowing Kafue River, fed by

the seasonal streams that flow from the emptying plains. The Busanga Plains in the north are the jewel in the crown of this beautiful park. Busanga is a vast flood plain which for much of the year is submerged under seasonal flood waters, generating vast areas of grazing for the huge herds of buffalo.

VARIETY

Established accommodation is surprising small, there is plenty of variety and freedom in terms of activities. The park’s memorable landscape and wildlife can be viewed in various exciting ways, including safari drives, walking safaris, game viewing cruises, canoeing, birdwatching, tiger fishing and sunset cruises.

Lions are frequently sighted in most parts of the Kafue and are often heard calling at night.

several islands and offers spectacular views and stunning sunsets along with opportunities for great fishing, boating and water sports as well as relaxing holidays or weekends just soaking up the sun.

SOUTHERN BELLE

There is a wide choice of accommodation, from family-run lodges to resorts. Adding a new dimension to holi-days by the lake is a new 22-cabin luxury houseboat, the ‘Southern Belle’, which has recently been moved from the Zimbabwe side and now operates from Siavonga. Run by Protea Hotels, the ‘Southern Belle’ contains a 40-person conference room, a restaurant and bar and a swimming pool. This remarkable vessel is a key asset for Zambia’s tourism industry.

Siavonga, at the eastern end of Lake Kariba, about two hours’ drive from Lusaka, is an increasingly

popular resort town. Accommodation ranges from well established lakeside lodges with spectacular views to self-catering chalets and campsites. Traditionally, Siavonga catered for the local market; but today its lakeside charm is being discovered by international tourists and demand has led to an increase in upmarket accommodation and facilities. Visitors can expect to find comfortable and clean accommodation with friendly, good quality service, wholesome cuisine and relaxed dining al fresco.

Anyone visiting the Kariba or Siavonga area should go to the Dam Wall, if only to witness the size of this awesome structure. The wide bridge offers ample room for walking on either side, while the vast lake stretches into the distance on one side with a sheer drop to the gorge on the other.

Sports fishing is good and the major lodges offer boats and tackle for hire. Further down the lake-shore, at Sinazongwe, the annual angling tigerfish

Unfortunately, guests cannot swim in the lake, because of crocodiles; but most hotels and lodges have swimming pools and offer excellent activities to keep guests entertained, with sunset cruises, boating, water sports, cultural tours and canoe safaris.

Lake Kariba and the Kariba Dam also provided the setting for the L. Ron Hubbard science fiction novel ‘Battlefield Earth’, which in 2000 was made into a film of the same name.

A VAST AREA OF UNdiSCOVEREd BEAUTYThe far north of Zambia is seldom visited

by tourists; but that is set to change as this sparsely populated region is opened up and made easier to reach.

The province’s key attractions are Lake Tanganyika, the deepest in Africa; Lake Bangweulu and its corre-sponding wetlands; Lake Mweru-wa-Ntipa; many breathtaking cascading waterfalls that have a misti-cism about them, often associated with their names. All are worth a visit, but are most spectacular after the rainy season.

Northern Zambia is also home to Shiwa Ng’andu, the region’s star attraction and one of Africa’s most interesting overnight accommodations.

DIVING

Lake Tanganyika has Zambia’s only PADI dive centre as well as excellent fishing with abundant Nile perch, yellowbelly, salmon and tigerfish. The Zambian National Fishing Competition takes place at Nkamba Lodge and Ndole Bay Lodge each year.

In terms of game viewing, the 2,000 sq km Sumbu National Park has elephant, hippo, puku, roan, sable, eland, warthog and bushbuck. There is a chance to view sitatunga in the Kampasa rainforest. Lion, leopard and buffalo are also present, but in smaller numbers.

Zambia’s only privately run game reserve, Kasanka National Park, is also in northern Zambia. Managed by the Kasanka Trust, the park and associated Bang-weulu Wetlands are famed for the annual migration of fruit bats. The wetlands are probably the best place in Zambia to view sitatunga.

The birdlife in northern Zambia is unique, giving birdwatchers an opportunity to see species not found in other parts of the country.

Getting to northern Zambia by road is not easy. But the adventure involved and the knowledge that the area is deserted on arrival makes a visit worthwhile. There is a tarmacked road all the way from Lusaka to Mpulungu and there will soon be one also from Mbala to Lake Tanganyika.

NEW ROAD

The gravel roads from Kawambwa and Kasama via Mporokoso is in good condition, as is the gravel road from the Luapula River valley via Kaputa on Lake Mweru Wantipa.

Construction of a new road from Mbala to Kasaba Bay got under way in 2010. The bitumen road from Kasama via Mbala to Mpulungu is also in good condition.

Visitors can charter a small aircraft and use the Kasaba Bay Airstrip in Sumbu National, while Proflight operates regular flights to the provincial capital, Kasama, from Lusaka and Ndola. The Kasaba Bay Airstrip is to be given international status and a new tarred runway within the year.

The property is situated on the Estate of Shiwa Ngandu (The Africa House) and is set along the banks of the Mansha River.

Kapishya has a fully stocked bar and a restaurant serving high standard international cuisine. The lodge has 220 volt electricity (generator/solar)

available 24 hours a day. Fridges and the freezer are run on gas and kerosene.

There are various activities available at Kapishya and on the estate – river floats, game drives, visits to the manor house, horse riding and bird walks. All activities are optional extras and must be pre-arranged.

Located on the banks of the Luwombwa River in the western half of the 420 sq km Kasanka National Park (Zambia’s first privately-run park), Luwombwa Lodge has recently been upgraded with the addition of new en-suite chalets. Some of these are family chalets with four beds in each, but some older chalets with separate bathrooms are also available.

The Luwombwa is a gentle meandering stream heavily fringed with evergreen forest. Bird-watching is a particular attraction with chances to see African finfoot, narina trogon and Pel’s

fishing owl – not to mention kingfishers, bee-eaters, sunbirds and ibises.

For fishermen a special permit is needed to catch tilapia, barbel and sometimes tigerfish. Motor boats and canoes with guides are available at the lodge.

On the nearby Chikufwe Plain, where the airstrip is located, there are reedbuck, duikers, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and sable.

Shiwa Ng’andu is an English-style mansion house built in remote central Zambia by an eccentric Englishman, Sir Stewart Gore Brown, and depicted in the book ‘The Africa House’ by Christina Lamb.

Sir Stewart died in 1967. Shiwa then fell into disrepair. But in 1999, it was bought by his grandson and then returned to its former glory.

Shiwa House accommodates 4-5 couples. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and re simple with original hardwood furnishings and

paintings. Fireplaces are lit every night and the atmosphere at Shiwa is unique.

The food is good, simple and wholesome and the stunning gardens are kept in their former glory.

Guests can choose from game viewing, boating, fishing, bird watching, horse riding, river walks, historical drives, traditional dugout trips, walking and trips to Kapishya Hot Springs.

With panoramic views over the swamps, Shoebill Island Camp takes its name from the rare and enigmatic shoebill that can be seen in the area.

The camp offers accommodation in safari tents under thatch roofs and in reed cottages. Each has two beds, an en-suite shower and flush toilet.

Shoebill Island is intended mainly for inter-national visitors, but also welcomes local or regional clients. It has a campsite nearby for those on a tighter budget.

Boating can be arranged in banana boats or dugout canoes. March and April offer an amazing watery wilderness for the adventurous. The main season is from May to August, while September to November offer great birding, but perhaps no shoebill sightings.

Shoebill Island Camp is managed by the Kasanka Trust. Visitors can be taken on to Shoe-bill from Kasanka by road or charter flight.

Wasa Lodge is situated on the edge of Lake Wasa in Kasanka National Park, just 12 km from the park entrance.

There are fine views, with puku, hippo and sometimes even sitatunga visible from the lodge, while the hide at Fibwe is just a 15-minute drive away.

There are three top quality rondavels, each with a double and single bed, en-suite bathroom and private veranda. Lighting is by solar power. Additional accommodation is in six simpler

chalets with separate facilities. The lodge has a new main building with a bar, dining room, reception and veranda overlooking the lake. All buildings are in traditional style with thatched roofs.

The Kasanka Trust is a wildlife charity, based in Zambia and the UK, which manages the park and hosts visitors and volunteers to Kasanka and the Bangweulu.

Kasanka has two permanent lodges: Wasa and Luwombwa.

mines to the north and large farming and bush areas to the south. The Copperbelt features several towns including Ndola, kitwe, Chingola, Luanshya and mufulira.

Because of its mining industry focus, the Copperbelt is less known for its tourism attractions. Nevertheless, it offers good opportunities for sightseeing and outside the main towns the area is blessed with beautiful scenery and has two large rivers within its boundaries.

Visitors will find a range of budget to first-class accommodation, especially in Chingola and Kitwe, with guesthouses and new hotels in good supply.

Chingola is the most picturesque of the Copper-belt towns. For golfing enthusiasts, Nchanga Golf

Course in Chingola is a real gem – one of the best kept and most beautiful courses in Africa.

NDOLA

The town of Ndola, 320 km north of Lusaka, is a key centre of commerce with direct international air connections to Johannesburg and Nairobi. The town has a large business district and modern shops and one of its main attractions is the annual Zambia International Trade Fair in July. As a result, Ndola has several accommodation options for business travellers.

Ndola is home to the Copperbelt Museum, which houses many interesting exhibits relating to the local minerals as well as cultural artefacts. The Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial, just 10 km from Ndola,
