Where are you from?I’m from Seoul, Korea.

Where do you live during the Academic year? Right now, I’m living in Seoul near to Konkuk university. And I’ll live here untill I will graduate university because of very convenient transfortation sytems. Also my sister’s high school is near to my house, it only take five minites to walk from our house to sister’s school.

Which city would love to live in?Seoul. First of all, I was born in Seoul and never leave from this city. Secondly, Seoul is the capital city of Korea so traffic systems, downtown, and every things are much im-proved comparing to old days.

Which is your hobby? My hobby is listening to music, watching movies and reading books. I am usually listening to music when I use public transpor-tation. It makes me not boring. And there is a big theater in front of my house, so my family like to go there and watch some interesting movie together. Last, I like to read books dur-ing a vacation. It gives many knowledge to me and makes me a peaceful mind.

Which is your level of english?I can read, write, and talk in english but not fluently. I have a problem to talk in english and read complicated english sentences. And yet writing and listening is better than talking and reading in english.

Which are your two favorite architects in Korea and why?First, Seong, Hyo Sang. I think he is most famous korean architect. When he design something, he always take care about the history of site, and connection to other build-ings. I like this viewpoint. Secondly, Kim, Soo Geun. He already passed away, but his masterpieces are still in our memory and those buildings are still considered as best buildings in Korea.

Which are your two favorite architects in the world and why?First, Antoni Gaudi Cornet. He is really

famous architect in the world because of the unique shape of his architecture. I like the curved surfaces of his buildings. Secondly, Frank Gehry. He is also very famous of typical shape. I’m always surprised at how he created that weird shape. I am very interested in it and I also want to make that kind of building in future, so he is one of my favorite architect.

Which are the two buildings you considered as best architecture project in Korea and why?First, I like Gong-Gan company building be-cause of the variety of places. Someone said that this building looks like a maze. Nonthe-less it doesn’t people feel conservative and contains a good program.Secondly, I like Soojoldang which contains many aesthetics of Korea. Therefore this build-ing makes people peaceful and comforable.

Which are the two buildings you considered as a best architecture project in the World and why?First, I like Casa Mila because of unique facade. The wave looking wall is very beautiful and it is very attractive to me.Secondly, I like Guggenheim Bilbao Museum because of the facade. This building has very unusual shape. When I saw it first, I was really shocked because of the shape. So I like those two buildings.

For which kind of people are you going to design in the future?I want to meet people who have common characters. There are many common people comparing to rich, handicapped person. I want to design the building that everybody can use it comfortably.

Why do you want to be an architect? Or what is the best to be an architect?Since I was young, I like to make something and drawing something. That means I like to create something. I think architecture is connected with this point of view, creating something. And I’m facinated in connection about building and people’s life. I think this is most interesting part of architecture. I hope I can be an architect who can take care my client’s life.

It was amazing last night. When we danced on the swing, every audiences gave us big ap-plause. And when we jump on the swing, every audience gave us cheers. So we couldn’t go to bed early because we were very excited. After that fantastic night, we were ready to an another day that we were used to have. In the morning, we get up at five. For circus artist, 24 hours are too short to practice our skills so we always get up early and ready for a new day. Eating nutritious food is important for us so we usually make breakfast together. After breakfast, we do a meditation. Meditation is good for improving concentration. If we can-not concentrate on our performance, we could be injured severely. So we spend some time to do meditation in silence. From 8 o’clock, we do training very hard. Process is very simple but it takes much time. First, we stretch our bodies. It is the most important part. Because if we don’t care this part, we can get hurt. So we stretch our body in different way about 90 minutes. After stretching, we do weight training to build muscles. To do difficult action, we need a power to sustain our bodies. So we also do this about 90 minutes. And we stretch our bodies again to relax our muscles. After this kind of training time, we have a nutritious lunch to ready for the afternoon. After lunch time, we have two different type of schedules depending on the performance at night. First, if we have a performance schedule, then we need to go to the big top(theatre) after lunch. And we are getting ready for the show. We do make-up or we have make-up artist’s help and change our clothes to costumes. And finally we should check the movement or sequence again. Show is usually performed for three hours. After the show, there is a breaktime about three hours before next show. In that time, we usu-ally have dinner and check our bodies’s condition or if we did a mistake in last show, then we practice it and check it again. Finally we check our make-up and costumes and perform the show again. The entire schedule usually ends around 10 o’clock.Second, if we have no performance schedule, then we practice our skills during almost entire afternoon about 6 hours. We perform swing with partner. So we practice together and also do it individually. We actually work in the circus company ‘Cirque du Soleil’. And this circus’s feature is that there are many dancing and an beatiful story for show. So we need to practice about the dancing. And we usually dance with other crews so we meet in the big gymnasium and practice together. Also we practice acting to express our characters more delicately. After the practicing, we have a dinner with our crews. And sometimes we do some small party together. At the end of a day, we can get our own free times.

SWINGING IN THE HOUSE

This video is talking about the air movement caused by tem-perature. The main topic of this video is that hot air goes up and cold air goes down. Therefore I get the idea about air circulation in a house coming from the difference of air temperatures.

This project is built for the festival. The designers want to make this dome to be the centre of festival. Therefore under this dome, people can drink, dance, hang out with people all night.

This school is built just for the circus practicing and it is just allowed for kids. Therefore the design of entire building is ad-justed to the circus practicing. Also arcitect decorates this place by circus items, for example big top.

The shape of dome has many adventage for saving energy. First of all, the air is circulated very well. Secondly, the shape of dome is very usuful for protecting from exterior environment.

When my clients do practicing, they need a safety net to protect their body. Therefore by using this idea, they can use the huge net for different usages.

First of all, I think about features of my clients and divide features into three parts, Cirque du Soleil, personal features and life cycle. And I colored words that is important.

My main idea of the project is ‘Swinging in the house’. For my clients, place for practicing is very important so they spend much time in the gymnasium. Therefore I made many shapes which represent people’s different actions; tum-bling, juggling, jumping, swinging.

TESTING MODEL TESTING MODEL

Discover how much energy is contained in each rooms Circus is very active performance and clients are full in energy. Therefore I want to study that which kind of energy is made and how many energy is come out. First of all, each ball means a room with a vol-ume. Secondly, the color of water means the temperature of room, red water means very hot room, yellow water means hot room and blue water means cold room. Thirdly, white small grains mean populations in a room. Fourthly, I put in some small grains of iron so if you shake those balls, it make a diffrent decibel of noise. Last, waves of straw mean entire energy of this room contained.

In the testing model, I just thought about energy. However in this project, I also thought about the movement. Movement of water is very similar to that of air. Therefore I did an experiment with blue and red water.First, I just poured blue water into the red water. In that time, I could see a little bit of movement and it was just mixed.Secondly, it’s simmilar to the first one, I just poured red water into the blue water. The result was same. I could see a little bit of movement and it was just mixed.Thirdly, I made a partition between blue water and red water, and I made a tiny crack on the partition. The result was amazing. Both different waters mixed slowly and made a movement, red water moved to the top and blue water moved to the bottom. And it was maintained in two different layers. Also I did the same experiment in different way. I just got rid of the partition at once. Same as another one, It made a movement and those waters were slowly mixed.Last, I put a bottle containing blue water that had holes on the bottom into the vowel conta-ing red water. The blue water slowly went into the red water and made two layers. In conclusion, by doing this experiment, I could check the movement of waters that have dif-ferent temperatures. According to this result, I could imagine the movements of airs. Hot air goes up and cold air goes down.

My partner and I made every rooms by cube and decided the sizes of them. Also we made a window on cubes for taking sunlights and arranged those rooms on different levels.

Deciding the levels of rooms

My Team Model

Why did I focus on the temperature? Before this page, I wrote about experiment, the Purple Project related to temperature causing air circulation. Therefore when I did the site analysis, I wanted to find elements re-lated to temperature. So I found three differ-ent elements in our site: direction, sunlights, wind. Those three elements strongly effect to the temperature inside house.

First Element : DirectionFirst of all, I focused on the direction. When I took this video, it was around 2 o’clock. And sunlights came from my back side. So I can guess my backside is south. From this, I can also find other directions. However in Korea, south is the best direction to take sunlights because Korea is in the northern hemisphere. So I will make windows on this side.

Second Element : SunlightsNext, I thought about sunlights. As I already talked about this script, in Korea basically sunlights come from the south. And this site has no obstacles to make a shadow in the site. For example, there is any big tree around the site. And buildings surrounding the site are not high. Therefore during the entire day, building can take sunlights and this make the temperature goes up inside of the house.

Third Element : WindThe last element is wind. When I visited the site, I can feel the strong wind. And I want to find the direction of wind, so I did a small experiment at the site. By using the smoke of cigarette I can find the direction of wind, north side. However the north side of the site is downhill. When I walked down the hill, there are a stream. So I thought that the wind could take the fresh air from the stream. After finding the direction of wind, I wanted to know the reason why wind was come from the stream. So my conclusion is that ‘The geographical features determine the direction of wind.’ On the east side, there is a small mountain and on the west side, there is a hill. Those mountain and hill are higher than the site, so those make a valley around this site. This valley is the way of wind so wind come from the north.

What is the conclusion of site analysis?First, the site is very warm since the site can take sunlights from the south for entire daytime and there are no obstacles to make shadows on the site. However the site is also very cool because of the strong wind. Also the site is very fresh because strong wind continuously came from the stream so it gave the fresh air and made an air circulation. Therefore I think this site has very good condi-tions to keep suitable temperature inside the house.

Finally, he changed the shape to hexagon and could connect each units.

My partner Team Model

First of all, I draw a diagram about my clients features, life style. On the basis of diagram, I thought about the room that they needed. Next, I decided kinds of rooms and arrange thoes rooms. Finally I thought about the designs of each rooms.

All of thoes pictures were made by the same idea, air movements are caused by different temperatures. I expressed this idea via 4 ways. First, I made a video. Secondly, I draw a picture by hand. Thirdly, I draw a picture with a computer program. Last, I made a model.

Doing something with other person is difficult because it is very hard to explain my idea to other person exactly. Doing this with my partner, I couldn learn how to explain my idea to other person not just talk to him. For example, I can explain my idea to my partner by drawing.

Rhino is a very useful program because we can export our file to other program like Cad, Sketchup. And drawing model with Rhino is quite easy and the outcome is very pretty.

First of all, I made a house by dome shape be-cause it’s good for energy circulation and very solid. My clients are circus artists who perform with swing. Therefore I bore floors from the basement to the top floor to make a space for swinging.

Swing in the DomeAxonometric

Before doing this, I have already decided entire levels of rooms. So I decided how to partition every levels of floors. Therefore in this development, I partitioned the floors and decided the shapes of each rooms.

Movement StudyEach rooms have different amounts of energy and sizes. Therefore to express the energy, I chose three colors, red, yellow and blue. Red meant very hot, yellow meant warm, and blue meant cold. Also I expressed the sizes of rooms by the sizes of balls. Finally, I arranged balls according to the result of purple project. Therefore I arranged hottest balls to the bottom and coldest balls to the top. And the airs of those rooms affected each other so I changed ball’s colores by gradation.

After deciding the facade of the dome, I had to think how to make inside bright using sun-lights. So I thought that I should make a big window in front of the dome. However, if I made entire dome to a whole glass, then I would be in trouble for controlling the temperature. So I needed to make a opaque ceiling on the top. Those pictures are a study model about how to make opaque ceiling on the dome and which shape is effective for the house.

Arrange rooms according to movement of energy Make a opaque ceiling on the dome to shut sunlights

Arrange Energy Balls

Make a shadowon the dome

Circus artists can do many actions. And when they do those actions, they become heated and release energy to the room. Therefore, I draw many kinds of actions that they can do. And I think about the heat which actions irradiate. Finally I decided rooms they needed and put this idea to the model. So I expressed this idea by the colored waters.

We did many kind of works in this class. We did mapping, making diagram, making models. But finally those all works are connected and access to the conclusion. I think this is improtant because this ability can improve our project better.

Energy is always a big issue to design building. If we good at think about the energy it could save the energy, and finally effect to the environment and save money.

Wrong scale can effect to the people feel uncomfortable. If the scale of house is smaller than human scale, people can not use that house. However, if the scale of house is bigger than human scale, people would feel that space is empty.

We usually make many models during the process. It is important not only making model also recording these by pictures. So making good pictures is important.

Route of sunlight is very important to design building. Because, if we do not care about this issue, then we could not get the sunlight inside of house.

Vapor is made when the water is heated. So in my design, the arrangement of temperature will cause the vapor or cloud around the buildings.

The term passive house refers to the rigorous, voluntary, Pas-sivhaus standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling.

The dome-shaped hotel is constructed with wooden arches, steel cables and a self-cleaning plastic layer instead of glass. The slinky-like Ark hotel can be adapted to suit both land and water. It is built to stay afloat in the event of floods or rising seas.

Before doing mapping, I found a reference about which kind of spaces in heiry. There are 9 kinds of spaces, but I thought residential, com-mercial and performance one were most impor-tant for my client. So I did a mapping to focus-ing on this view.

Slow city mapping

I separated the pop up book with three parts. Left part, there were three bubbles for residents. Front part, there was a bubble to sell souvenir to visitors. And right part, there was a big bubble that some people do circus in there.

Before making this model, I had to change the house unit that I made before midterm. Be-cause it was not suit in scale. So I changed the scale first. But after this, a new problem was happened. The problem was height of celling. So I had to delete one floor and arrange rooms again. After doing this, I made model officially. First of all, I made bubble shape. By making this, I could imagine the scale of each part. And also I could maesure the size of each bubbles. The material of those bubbles was pvc that was quite flexible. So I could cut it by siscissors and attached each bubbles. After making shape of bubbles, I made a ground. First, I just made it simple. But after, I realized that these bubbles need the basement. So I digged the ground plate according to the out line of bubbles. Finally, I made a hill in the theater part meaning seats. And also I made a stage and machine room. Lastly, I made a curve on the 1st floor of houses.

In mapping, I picked three programs. But each programs have different feature so I had to care about those things. For exam-ples first, commercial space and performance space have to be near to the street becaue of the apporoach. Second, residential space have to be protected from the visitors sight.

In the midterm, we already made a unit of house. And I thought that I could use this in multi-house. But, there is some problems to put this unit frankly. So I had to change the size, deleted one floor.

Because of the moving floors, the air will make different move-ment. In my entire project, movement of air is one of the most improtant part so I studied about the movement of each situ-ation.

First of all , the residential units and performance units is very near each other. So I connected them in the basement. It is totally opened and there is any door in that space.

During the design process, there were many changes about the level of seats. First, I though basement level is better but finally I changed my mine. because there is the moving seats system so it is not neccesary to make it low than the ground.

For making final form of performance space, there are four pro-cess. First, I just thought about the simple bubble that all sur-face is solide. Second, I thought about shell structure that half of surface is covered by glass. Third, I thought about the theater that has no ceiling. Fourth, I thought the theater that covered by truss sturcture and half of bubble is opened. At last I made the final shape.
