INTRODUCTION TO THE INDIAN SCENARIO Studying at a HEI in India- a privilege 12.4 % youth enter HEIs (Sharma,2010) State-run HEIs subsidized by Govt

(taxpayers) up to 95 % sometimes Beneficiaries have social responsibility

to pay back Contributing to EFA goals- one way to do

that

RAK CHILD STUDY CENTRE, LADY IRWIN COLLEGE Set up in 1955 as laboratory preschool.

Has 150 children in: - Play centre for 2.5-4 yr. olds - Nursery classes for 4-5 yr. olds - Inclusive education for 3-8 yr. olds - SETU: early intervention below 3

yrs. - Day care for 6 months-12 yrs. - Child & family guidance and

counseling

SECOND CASE University of Delhi

EFA goal 3 requires countries ‘to promote learning & skills for young people’.

In 2006, DU set up an Equal Opportunity Cell for students in ‘Reserved Categories’- SC, ST, OBC, Disability (http://eoc.du.ac.in)

All 56 affiliated colleges expected to have an EOC on their campus, using DU guidelines

L.I.C.has facilitated entry and education of many students who may have remained outside HEIs (Sharma, 2011)

THIRD CASE Jamia Millia Islamia, another Univ. in New Delhi Centre for Early Childhood Development &

Research ( offers masters degree) directly engaged in strengthening national Integrated Child Development Scheme Centres (ICDS) .Is a technical resource centre under Prof. Rekha S. Sen for Delhi, Haryana & Rajasthan for the purpose of :

Developing locally suitable ECCE curriculum Training Anganwadi Workers Evaluating process & outcomes, including
