Coaches Corner

Good Evening and Welcome to the Dragons Den, for those of you who didn’t attend last week’s game, you missed another high scoring game of hockey with the Dragons slaying the Stingrays 10-1.

I hadn't been happy with the offensive part of our game when we played Widnes last time out as we conceded 5 goals at home therefore, it was an area of focus for us to work on in training and something we had addressed as Eddie Begley was only minutes away from a shutout, hopefully tonight’s game will see us as strong defensively as we are offensively again, as we all know we have some quality firing power this season.

For those of you who don’t know, I would like to share the unfortunate for us but positive news that Eddie Begley has been offered a pro contract to play Elite league inline hockey in France, therefore Eddie has now played his last game for the Dragons and will be moving to France at the end of the month. On behalf of the team and Dragons management we would like to congratulate Eddie and thank him for all his effort and contributions over the last 2 seasons, Eddie is a pure hockey player that lives and breathes his hockey (Like most) and we wish him the best of luck. With this in mind we have acted quickly and I am pleased to announce that we have signed George Cox. George has been playing his hockey in Telford for the past few seasons but is a local lad who previously played for the freeze and was showing great potential prior to his move from Deeside. George is still very much a junior player therefore its great to see us take on and develop the team for the future.

Jordan Bannon – I’m delighted to confirm that we have resigned Jordan Bannon on what I will describe as a part time basis, we have a few guys on this contract agreement due to their demanding work commitments however tonight will see all three of them line up for the Dragons Bannon, Chappell & Founds as we are without our junior line as they play in Nottingham tonight. We also wish them luck.

Injuries – Both Matt W & Gez Lewis are both recovering from their injuries and will be out of the line up for a few more weeks – we wish them a speedy recovery.

A few people questioned last week where Dave Costelleo was and why he wasn’t in the line up! Unfortunately due to the demands of the training schedule and fixtures most weekends, Dave has made the decision that he could not commit fully to the team and has therefore departed from us. This was not an easy decision for Dave to make but one he made for the good of the team however as we witnessed last weekend we always have Kenny (The Killer) Williams to rely upon to entertain the supporters..

Tonight we face off against the Widnes Wild and I’m sure everyone will agree last time we played it was a very entertaining game of hockey. Tonight’s game will be even tougher as we are missing a few guys and I hear that the Wild have a few new faces on board therefore it will be very competitive tonight. As Widnes is closer to Deeside then Manchester & Blackburn etc I guess they now take over the role as our local rivals, therefore tonight’s game will be a passionate affair with players playing not just for the points but for personal pride..

#6 Steve Fellows

Ice Skate Profiling at Deeside Ice Rink

What are the benefits of Profiling?* Improved balance* Sharper turns* Quicker turns* Explosive starts* Reduced fatigue* More powerful strides and better glide* More skating "moves"* Injury reduction* Increased agility

* Increased lateral movement* Increased speed* Increased stability* Controlled leg extensions

* Improved stickhandling* and more

What is Profiling? In simple terms, Profiling is grinding and shaping the "rocker" radius of the skate blade. Still confused? Well think of a rocking chair and the shape of the rocker. If you change the rocker's curve, the chair will either rock faster or slower depending on how it is shaped. If you alter a skate's rocker, it's performance will change too.

Blade HollowMany skaters complain of their skates not being sharp enough. A very deep hollow is not always the best answer for this problem. Technically sound skaters, Paul Coffey for instance, skate on 1.25” hollow and have no problem keeping their edge. The best method to solve this problem is to increase the amount of blade making contact with the ice.

COSTProfiling costs £15.00 and includes a sharpen grind. Profiled skates must then be re-ground on the ProSharp machine to maintain the profile (standard regrind price). We recommend a fresh profile after 9/10 regrinds. For more information see a member of staff.

Match Report Vs Stingrays

Dragon’s Winning Streak Continues

Looking for a win Deeside Dragons’ head coach, Steve Fellows predicted a ‘fast flowing game’, but no one could have foreseen the landslide victory over Hull Stingrays on Sunday.

Starting the puck rolling Shaun Kippin, assisted by import Dan Söderberg-Andersson, found the net only 46.8 seconds into the first and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Add two further goals, controlled defensive teamwork and spectacular line saves from net minder Ed Begley and the Dragons headed into the second with a 3-0 lead.

Kippin landed his game hat trick early in 20:34. Soon after he joined forces with James Parsons to set #5 up for Söderberg-Andersson who shoot right under the Hull net minder’s butterfly defence. Michael Jones and Simon Furnival also lit up the lights, which Kippin complemented with his fourth goal of the night.

The total sat at Dragon’s 8 – Hull 0 and the opposing team’s annoyance rang load and clear when a moment of utter frustration from a Stingray defenseman ignited a full line brawl after the end of second period buzzer. Suddenly the future of the third was blow open.

Tension rippled through the crowd as the teams hit the ice and we watched the final period unwrap with both sides shorthanded by two men apiece.

Steve Fellows and Marc Lovell demonstrated the Dragon’s domination of the game, each sending the puck into the back of Hull’s net. Yet, perseverance paid off for Hull when the Deeside conceded a goal, finally marking their clean sheet. Though it hardly mattered, the final score Dragons 10 – 1 Hull.

Final buzzer- Dragons 10 – 1 Stingrays.
