CONSTRAINTS IN ORGANIC FARMINGProduction of poor quality inoculants /manures

without understanding the basic microbiological techniques

Short shelf life of bio fertilizers.Lack of essential equipments, power supply, etc.Space availability for laboratory, production,

storage, etc.Lack of suitable training on the production

techniquesUnawareness on the benefits of the technology.Non availability of right inoculants at the right

place in right time.©Koustubh Yadre 2011

COMPOST TUMBLER TECHNOLOGY A tumbler consists of an UV insulated

rotomoulded plastic vessel, which has three layered insulation foam.

Due to insulation material compost pile gets hot very quickly and accelerates decomposition of waste.

Drum can be rotated with the help of handle; turning of compost pile will become very easy

Comparison Points Bio fertilizers

available in marketBio fertilizer produced from Tumbler technology

Formulation methods 5 % culture + 95% Carrier

100 % microbial culture can be produced. No carrier required.

Microbial Count 106-107 >109-1011

1 Kg product sufficient for

1 Acre land Min.15-20 Acre Land

Price 150-200 Rs./ Kg 100 Rs./ Kg concentrated culture

Contamination Up to 104 level Not detected

Vigor of microbial strain

Cant be determined Always produced fresh inoculums hence more vigor

Purity of strain Has to be check in laboratory

Preparation of Phosho-CompostShredder machine= Can cut branches up to

10-12 mm diameter. Also useful to shred dry leaves, green grass, and other agricultural waste. An ideal tool for composting and mulching.

Power= 2 hp single phase motor/ can be attached to Diesel Engine. Capacity is 200 kg waste /hour

Preparation of Mixed Organic Fertilizers

Conventional farm yard compost contains 1.4% Nitrogen, 1.8% Phosphorous and 0.7% Potassium. By adding certain organic elements this compost can be enriched in nutrient composition.

Compost tumbler enable the farmers to mix the content uniformly, with minimum manpower, and requires very short period of time.

Preparation of Rapid Vermi compostAs earthworms can’t tolerate heat generated

during primary decomposition of waste, heaping process is necessary before inoculating in earth worm bed. In normal conditions heaping required 30-45 days. But by using tumbler technology within 8-10 days this process can be achieved.

Hence cycle time of preparation of vermi compost reduced to 45 days from 90 days

Prime objective of this project is to

prepare a role model for production of in house bio fertilizers, and P- enriched compost from agricultural wastes. By which people living there got a sustainable and profitable revenue generation scheme.

Benefits to Target Population By using self prepared compost, vermin compost, bio fertilizer;

farmers can achieve a great yield without hampering soil profile. Hence for sustainable agriculture this model is very important.

Farmers can produced quality organic fertilizers from the farm waste which can be sellable in market giving a continuous revenue generation scheme.

There will be no requirement of outside fertilizers; technology is complementary with organic farming.

Farm waste will be taken for process instead of burning. So creating good environmental conditions within village. Also open dumping of waste will be restricted, prohibiting bad odour, and other nuisances.

Together all, waste management within village level can be ideal for clean and green environment.

Scope of Project

As the problem of getting quality organic manure becoming a serious issue, proposed tumbler technology provides an ideal solution. Farmers can develop their own bio fertilizer, compost and vermin compost within a short period of time and using very cheap microbial techniques.

Proposed model can be replicated at every village, farm, food processing units, major cities, hotels, and every place where waste is generated!

Due to its unique features, this model can be replicated very rapidly in various sectors of society.
