THE DARK KNIGHT

Here we have an establishing-shot overlooking ‘Gothem City’ the place in which the film is set. As we can see the shot is predominantly dark, already highlighting the tone of the film. This also ties in with the title of the film ‘The Dark Night’ presenting a scene in which the audience instantaneously identify with the film or directors intentions. Additionally, there is minimal lighting in the surrounding area whereby the focus point is in the centre of the shot, just over the bridge. This could be to show where the action takes presidency. However, it can be seen that from the use of dark lighting, accompanied by a soft and mellow sounds leaves the audience in a sense of mystery.

Here we see an extensive and impressive use of editing and computer generated graphics. From this we see the ground breaking up as one player makes his way to the touchline. This player is a representational device used to present both the audience and also characters in the film. He has no clue about what is occurring behind him and we the audience are left bewildered about where the problem has stemmed from. Additionally, the way in which the ground disintegrates and players fall into a pit in which the depths are unknown is what entices the audience to want to see more, try and unravel the mystery.

Here I have divided the shots into four separate transitions in which it is evident that the antagonistic character features in predominantly dark lighting. This is to add to the intensity of these scenes and allow the audience to appreciate the significance of his position. Compared to ‘safe House’ these scenes are slightly similar in terms of the use of high-key lighting to highlight a main focus in the shot.

In contrast, by looking at Batman the protagonist character, it is evident that he features in more natural lighting but having said this it becomes apparent that he also features in slightly darker contrasts. This could have been devised in editing to present a key aspect of the film, where the protagonist finds himself in positions where the task ahead strays him into the controversy of Gothem City.

Here we have one of the concluding shots in which we are shown and exposed to more computer generated graphics used to present a creative sense of imagery. If you look carefully, the buildings have been devised to fall apart, revealing the symbol of iconic figure of Batman. Such imagery is what further entices the audience to watch the film after seeing this trailer. Again, there is dark lighting, but gradually transcends into a very strong white light that almost comes towards the audience on screen.
