Focus on Swine Feed Use
• In the US a large portion of the feed usage of dairy powders is in pig starter diets.
• In Asia and Latin American feed usage of dairy is heavily weighted to swine.
• Growing usage of dairy in swine feeds
• Very large global usage potential

Why Dairy in Swine Feeds?
• “Early Weaning” 18‐30 days after birth
• Two+ litters of pigs/sow/year
• Gestation period of the sow is ~114 days
• 20‐25 pigs weaned per sow/year
• Digestive physiology‐‐enzymes
• Very young pigs are capable of digesting lactose but not much starch.
• A lactose source essential for early weaning.

How Is Dairy Used In Swine Feed?
• Only in the “pig starter” diets• The first dry feed consumed
• 5‐20% inclusion rate in pig starters• US consumption: ~1 kg/pig (lifetime)
• Fed for 3‐5 weeks after weaning
