“Where Are You Going?” is a testament to the restrained power of the CXA80 with clean and clear acoustic guitar detail, extended but not booming bass and precise drum timing and professional delivery of the stereo image.

“Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” ably demonstrates the CXA80’s grasp on instrumentation as it starts with crisp and detailed drum strokes and moves into duelling guitars that would be out of time on lesser amplifiers, and following into the immaculate presence of Thom Yorke’s vocals.

What does ‘British Sound’ mean? To us it’s about removing any barriers that might distort or alter the original recording and not adding any of our own flavour. What you hear from our products is a pure and unfiltered ‘British’ sound – just as the artist intended.

DUAL MONO DESIGNThe entire internal layout of the CXA80 is designed to minimize left and right interference (crosstalk) and provide astonishing stereo separation so you can virtually place each instrument in your room. It has symmetrical and separate transformer taps for the left and right channels, twin rectifiers and separate PSUs. When combined together these ‘dual mono’ features deliver incredible presence and depth to your music and a wide, enveloping soundstage that’s normally only available in amplifiers costing many times more.

Effortless Power

300VA TOROIDAL TRANSFORMERIn 1968, Cambridge Audio were the first audio company to use a toroidal transformer in an integrated amplifier - the now iconic P40. Toroidal means doughnut shaped and it’s this shape that makes toroidal transformers an audio industry standard - mainly due to exceptionally low levels of electro-magnetic interference when compared to traditional transformer designs. The custom grade toroidal transformer in the CXA80 is 50% larger than the CXA60 (200VA) with much greater reserves to draw on for truly impressive power and bass.

POWERFUL SPEAKER OUTPUTCapable of outputting 2x 80W into 8Ω and 2x 120W into 4Ω, the CXA80 has huge power reserves and can be paired with a wide variety of speakers.

DIGITAL AND ANALOGUE CONNECTIONSThe two TOSLINK optical and one SP/DIF Coax connectors mean you can connect any digital entertainment device to your CXA80. Instantly upgrade sound from your TV, blu-ray player, games console or CD transport for sound quality up to studio master level. Analogue options include a high quality balanced XLR input, four sets of RCA inputs and a front 3.5mm Aux jack.

ASYNCHRONOUS USBThe addition of the asynchronous USB type B input is a significant upgrade over the CXA60. If you’ve got plenty of music stored in different files sizes and file formats on your laptop or computer, all you need to do is plug your laptop straight into the USB socket and press play. It’s that simple. From CD-ripped WAVs to 24-bit/192kHz FLAC files, the CXA80’s internal DAC handles them all.

24-BIT WOLFSON DACA Digital Analogue Converter (or DAC for short) has a very important job in the signal chain. It reads the zeroes and ones from a digital signal and turns it into an analogue waveform, ready to be amplified to drive the speakers.

The premium quality Wolfson WM8740 DAC built in to the CXA80 can handle digital audio files up to 24/192kHz and was chosen for the CX Series having proved itself at the heart of our award-winning DAC Magic range. Whether it’s music from TV or files stored on a phone or tablet, the WM8740 brings a significant upgrade to sound quality over most built-in DACs.

Rated at 80 Watts per channel, the CXA80 has power in reserve for even the most demanding speakers. But it’s the way in which this power is delivered that puts the CXA80 completely out of reach from its competitors.

Designed to work with as wide a range of separates as possible, we engineered the CXA80 with both digital and traditional analogue inputs. Digital support is in the form of S/PDIF co-axial and TOSLINK digital inputs, plus an asynchronous USB Audio input and an optional BT100 Bluetooth dongle for high quality aptX wireless streaming.

3 Brains and Beauty

FLOATING BRUSHED FINISH CHASSISOn it’s own the CXA80 makes quite a statement with it’s floating effect chassis. Stack it up with other components in the CX family and it becomes the centrepiece of a truly elegant hi-fi solution. Not only does the CXA80 look good, the sleek design encompasses a low resonance chassis that also enhances sonic performance.

CLEAR CONNECTIONSWho else has struggled to read an input label while crouching over a piece of Hi-Fi equipment? As a clever touch, the rear connectors on all CX Series Hi-Fi components are labelled upside down as well as the correct way up.

EASY-TO-READ FRONT PANELWith such a wide variety of inputs it’s important to know what’s going on at a glance. The CXA80’s front panel let’s you know exactly what’s happening in a clear, discreet and stylish way.

In The Press

Inside Story

“I was really excited by this amplifier. It had all the features I want in an amp and all the per-formance I demand: high power output combined with the ability to drive low-impedance loads, plus the CXA80 was beautifully clean-sounding and able to deliver the intricacies of a musical performance while still sounding musical, rather than clinical.

And did I mention the superb build quality and the sophisticated industrial design? But I became even more excited when I discovered that the recommended retail price was around half what I’d expected it to be. In my view, Cambridge Audio’s CXA80 is a bargain. Snap one up while you can!”

SOUND AND IMAGE MAGAZINE – DEC 2015

Our designers have been on a mission to create a hi-fi amplifier that is as beautiful on the outside as it is well-engineered on the inside.

We believe in our products wholeheartedly but don’t just take our word for it. What do the experts think?

We’re located in London SE1, right on the doorstep of some of the most creative, exciting developments in the music industry and our products are designed and engineered in-house. Outside of work we’re musicians, sound engineers and above all music lovers.

“A lot of care was taken over the design for both CXA amplifiers to ensure efficiency and good performance. And a lot of care and precision was given to the tuning - even more so than for previous products in a similar price bracket. The CX range of amplifiers were designed from scratch rather than based on existing designs in order to achieve this.

The overriding principle was to get top quality performance and sound that would rival competitor products that sat at similar and higher price points.”
