M ost of us had to “survive” 2020 and were glad to see its door close. If I were to make an educated guess, I would say that some of you are also concerned about what is coming toward us in 2021. I understand why, and it is reasonable to feel that way. I have battled those same feelings, but God has been speaking to me about my mindset. This past weekend, He directed my attention to the book of Ruth. If you would indulge me for a moment, I believe you will be blessed by what God spoke to me. The book of Ruth opens up with the Israelite, Naomi; her husband, Elimelech; and two sons fleeing to the city of Moab because of a severe famine that was devastating the land of Judah. Naomi’s residency in Moab was tragic. Shortly after moving to Moab, her husband died; and then ten years later, both of her sons died. Naomi heard that the Lord had given food to her people in Bethlehem. Thrice- bereaved and without a provider, she decided to return to Bethlehem (Ru 1:6). Ten years in Moab had changed her—life has a way of doing that. She was devastated and broken beyond recognition. As she entered Bethlehem, the Bible implies the women of the city began gossiping about her. I can imagine them saying something like, “Who is that? Is that Naomi? She is almost unrecognizable!” Naomi overheard them speaking. She told them no longer to call her Naomi, which means pleasant or sweet, but to call her Mara, which means bitter. With a broken heart, she explained to them that she had left Bethlehem full, but the LORD had brought her back empty. The truth is Naomi was not empty; she had brought her daughter-in-law, Ruth, back to Bethlehem with her. Naomi’s journey to Moab was painstaking–it had ravaged her. But Naomi’s journey to Moab was not a mistake. Naomi’s journey to Bethlehem was about connecting with Ruth. “Who was Ruth?” you might ask. Well, Ruth married Boaz and then Ruth and Boaz had a son named Obed. Obed had a son named Jesse who had a son named David. The Moabitess Ruth was King David’s great grandmother! And ultimately, Jesus Christ came through the lineage of Ruth! Ruth was Jesus’ great grandmother (many times removed)! 2020 was hard—2021 may be harder; but if you will change your mindset, you may very well gather some Ruth-like gold from these unprecedented times. These days could either make you bitter or better. A diamond is nothing more than carbon that has undergone an intense amount of heat and pressure. The heat and pressure do not destroy the carbon; they change it into something spectacular. The beautiful pearl that hangs from the wealthy woman’s necklace was created at a great cost to the oyster. Small grains of sand get lodged inside an oyster’s shell. This creates extreme discomfort for the oyster, so the oyster wraps the grain of sand in a pearl- colored fluid—this process takes place many times over. The result is undeniably beautiful, but it came at an exceptional price. I will admit, 2020 (our Moab) took some stuff from us, but that is not the end of the story—we have taken some stuff out of 2020, too! We are coming out of Moab with Ruth-like treasures of wisdom and understanding we never had before. We are coming out of Moab with a faith we have never had before. I know you are struggling right now. I know you are hurting right now. I know some of you may be weeping, but you have to take heart! The Bible says weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning (Ps 30:5)! Take heart! Morning is coming! The world may look bleak, but we are not of this world! WE BELONG TO GOD! We are in His hands and nothing can pluck us out! Never forget that God will ultimately work all things out for our good (Ro 8:28). 2020 was not a set-back; it was a set-up for a comeback!

    — David Lamb (Principal of the Galilean Christian Academy)

Thank you, David. Now I’ll try to put my pen to work. For two days I have really struggled as I tried to write the January 2021 Newsletter. Try as I did, I could not come up with anything that I felt told my feelings and dreams for the New Year. Like David mentioned, 2020 has to be one of the hardest years for all of us and one we will never forget. But the Lord has been good to us here at the Galilean Home and by His grace, we are still marching on. Our school is running full steam now. We have 120 students and a tremendous staff that work together to keep things going. And with school back in session, our Angel House is as busy as ever caring for our babies as well as offering childcare for those working on the property. The Bread of Life is finally, after a struggle of nearly 10 months, also getting back to the way it used to be. Good food, great service, and a Christian atmosphere. We are back to full house of 65 employees. During the shut downs, we were able to do a lot of much needed revamping to our dining rooms. There has also been a lot of work happening at the Galilean Home itself. Our Blessing House and Angel House renovations are still in process. We were able to get quite a bit done this summer and fall thanks to a record number of work teams coming from all over. In fact, as I write this, a team of 10-12 young ladies from Iowa will be arriving this week to lend us a hand (or two). There aren’t enough words to express how appreciative we are of all of those who give to the Galilean Home; whether that be monetarily, in time, or through prayer. Because it takes each of those things and our mighty God to keep us going. We have been blessed with some amazing people that He has put in our path.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER DONATING MEAT? A large portion of our grocery budget is meat. We can get 175 lbs of chicken for $200 and 150 lbs of beef for $300. You can designate your tax-deductible donation to purchasing meat for the Galilean Home by calling Joey at 606.706.1735.

One of which is our Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn Shultz. She doesn’t get enough recognition for all that she does. She is more than just our volunteer coordinator. She wears many hats! (But she has never worn mine!) Dawn and her family live just a half mile away on our farm and have been with us for going on 19 years. Her, along with her right hand woman, Erla, keep things going in a well-organized, efficient, cheerful way that works well for our gang. I also have to shout a HUGE thank you to all of those that made it possible for our Blessing House, Girl’s Dorm, and Angel house to have a fantastic Christmas. Of course, we never go without telling the Christmas Story and ensuring that everyone knows the true reason for the season. But if you could see the smiles and hear the excitement when the gifts were opened…there is just something so heartwarming and touching about them. Turning 80 this past year brought on some medical issues that I have been able to fight and overcome thanks to all those around me that help take care of me (despite my stubbornness). Right now, I need a total reverse left shoulder replacement and a right knee replacement. But the good news is, I have a good right shoulder and a good left knee! Count your many blessings name them one by one.

    —Papa’ Oso(Daddy Bear in Spanish)

Our volunteer program is a good way to dive in and be the hands and feet of Jesus in our ministry. Ladies 18 & older, if you feel you have the love and patience along with a good amount of flexibility to care for our family, we encourage you to apply. Volunteers are very important part of what we do. You get to care for our severely handicapped residents in the Blessing House, and other members of our family, as well as caring for our babies at the Angel House. We also need teacher’s aides for our academy, so there are plenty of areas in which to serve. We provide housing and basic needs, but do require at least a three-month commitment. Please prayerfully consider this and give our Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn Shultz, a call at 606.706.9457 or email her at [email protected] for more info.
