Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025

CULTURE AND TOURISM



The Barddhaman planning area is enriched with many historical landmarks, places of interest both from scenic and cultural point of view.

The importance of these places of interest can be heightened by augmenting the approach and supportive facilities for the same.

Presently these are scattered throughout the area.

Tourism



•Vijay Toran or Curzon Gate:Curzon Gate, also known as Vijoy Toran, is a historical monument constructed by Maharaja Bijoychand to welcome Lord Curzon at the entrance of Burdwan Town.

•Sarbamangala TempleSarbamangala Temple is located in the heart of the Barddhaman town. It is believed that the idol of goddess Sarbamangala have been found from the Sandbed of river Damodar.

•BaroduwariBaroduwari also known to be Bijoy Toran is located in Kanchannagar. This monument is one of the 12 Torans which was built in 1930.

•Krishna Sayar Krishna Sayar spreads over 33 acres of lush green land with recreational facilities such as boating, walking trail, park aquarium and other attractions. This lake was made by the then King in the year 1691.

•Shiv Temple Complex at NababhatThis is a temple complex of Lord Shiva comprises of 108 deities. This complex is located at Nababhat.

•Shiv Temple Complex at NababhatThis is a temple complex of Lord Shiva comprises of 108 deities. This complex is located at Nababhat. The 108 deities of Lord Siva are housed in 108 temples in picturesque surroundings, a beautiful garden and a lake.

•Nawab Bari of Khwaja Anwar BereThis makbara is built over the Tomb of Khwaja Anwar, the famous Mughal Warrior. This 300 years old structure is a blend of Indo- Saracenic and local Bengal architecture.

•Sanskriti Lok ManchaSanskriti Lok Mancha, built in the year 1993, has now evolved as a cultural centre of Barddhaman. Movies are screened and Cultural programmes are performed in this theatre.

• Burdwan Science CentreThe Burdwan Science Center is a joint venture between Government of India, Government of West Bengal and Burdwan University. The centre is of excellence standards which is located near the Burdwan University Complex.

•Meghnad Saha PlanetariumA Planetarium was constructed in the year 1994 by a joint venture between Indian and Japanese Government. The Planetarium is of International standards and one of the best in Asia located near the University Complex.

In general ,for all these places of tourism interest will be evaluated with the following criteria

• Adjacency characteristics• Landform• Infrastructural facilities• Accessibility by different transport modes• Major Environmental issues• Tourist influx- Daily/ Seasonal• Latent threats• Tourist accommodation- quantum and nature• Land Ownership• Local inhabitants working directly or indirectly in

tourism sector• Historic and Socio Cultural reasons• Cyclical and specific attraction like fairs/ festivals/ large

pilgrimage etc.

Evaluation of tourist places



Project proposals in the planning domain of culture /Heritage / tourism for the planning area Creation of Landscape Recreational areas for organized

Outdoor Recreation especially for environmentally vulnerable areas.

Temporary camps, some quality Hotels and Resorts near the Damodar River bank.

Creating a tourist corridor connecting major areas of religious and tourist interests.

Revival of Banka riverfront for outdoor recreational purposes.

Environmental illumination of townscape elements in the high density area of the town.

Major organized Open spaces like, Urban squares, ceremonial / Recreational grounds, and permanent fair

grounds.
