in the Words of our preschool Faculty

Daniel Garcia, Music Teacher“I have worked many years as an early childhood educator and incorporate music into my daily curriculum with children in the classroom. My educational background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement and exploration of rhythm instruments.”

Chaia May, Music Teacher “I have been teaching music and movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, multiple dance forms and coursework in early childhood development.”

Mary Ellen Pense, Music Teacher“As a music educator for the past 25 years, I have worked with both preschool and school-aged children. My core philosophy is learning through play. Nursery rhymes, singing games, folk songs and movement are the perfect way to teach music concepts and motivate learners with active participation. This approach is especially true for the very young not yet reading and is supported by my Orff-Schulwerk training and Kodaly Association membership.”

Christina Stein, Music Teacher “I have a background in music from the SF Conservatory of Music. I have taught music and movement classes for young children for several years and also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments and music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!”

Anja Blum, Art Teacher “My background brings together architecture and art education and enables me to guide children through the wonderful process of making art. In a warm and nurturing environment I encourage children to explore new techniques and materials through a variety of activities. I love seeing children create art and gain self-esteem and confidence in their abilities along the way.”

Lena Boot, Art Teacher “In addition to my work as an early childhood educator, my teaching passion is working with preschool-age children giving them opportunities to be creative in art. Creating art is a sensory activity that allows children to observe, explore and use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves and their surroundings.”

Erin Fournier, Art Teacher“I have taught art to young children for over 10 years at CSMA’s on-site art camps and through its Arts4Schools Program at local schools. I received my BFA in Spatial Art from SJSU. I enjoy providing children with opportunities to explore the arts and to work with different media in a creative, nurturing environment.”

Christina Hill, Art Teacher “As both an early childhood and art educator I believe in the power of creation, exploration and expression as a means for understanding the world, others and ourselves. I have taught art, from fundamentals to mural making, in public and private schools for years and have taught environmental art and printmaking as well.”

Nora Sarkissian, Art Teacher“I have taught art for over 15 years to children and adults throughout No. California. I received my Masters degree in art from the Univ. of MA and have studied art in Germany and England as well. I enjoy teaching children about the ‘creative process’ through a variety of mediums including drawing, painting and clay.”

Jo Vadeboncoeur, Art Teacher“My teaching style reflects my background in child develop-ment and art education. Learning through exploration is central to my classes. I like to set the stage with multiple projects and let the students approach the materials on their own terms. I use inquiry-based learning to engage with students. My goal is for children to be confident that they are artists and that they can try anything.”

Dawn Walker, Program Coordinator & Music Teacher“My background includes classes in Kodaly, Kindermusik and Musikgarten. I have a Master of Music degree with a classical music emphasis and a broad knowledge of American folk music. I like to incorporate all of these styles in my classes, building skills through listening, singing, movement and rhythmic games.”

•STUDENTRECITALSStudent recitals at CSMA are given near the end of each semester and provide an invaluable opportunity for students to give a formal presentation and to gain confidence in front of an audience of family and friends. For a recital schedule, see: www.arts4all.org/attend/calendar.htm?cat=all#recitals. All student recitals are free and open to the public.

Additional Opportunities for Private Lesson Students•MUSICEXAMINATIONS

CSMA hosts and prepares students for the practical and theory examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), an international organization that operates music examinations in over 90 countries every year. Faculty select students for whom the ABRSM curriculum and performance challenge provide appropriate motivation and reward. Over 350 students from throughout Silicon Valley come to CSMA twice a year to perform for the ABRSM examiner who travels from London.

Last year, of the 100+ CSMA students who took either the ABRSM Practical (includes performance and aural training) or Theory Exams, 100% passed. The world-wide exam pass rate is approximately 87%. Most CSMA students taking the exams annually pass with Distinction or Merit.

For more information about ABRSM, see pg 17.

•MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

Merit Scholarships are awarded to students (grade school through high school) who have shown a high level of commitment, talent and achievement in their CSMA studies and who are ready to develop the additional skills necessary to become high-level performers, including:

• Traininginstagepresenceandetiquette• Workingandperforminginensembleswithother

Merit Scholars• Learninghowtorehearseeffectively• Buildingaperformanceportfolio

These skills are built through ensemble coaching sessions with CSMA faculty, special workshops for Merit Scholars and, most importantly, performances at high-profile events, both on- and off-site.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, students must be nominated by a faculty member. Students only become eligible for nomination after one year of continuous CSMA private lessons (or 18 months, if absent during summer). Each year, CSMA awards approximately 50 Merit Scholarships, with competitive auditions before a panel of judges held annually in the spring.

Merit Scholarship students and their families are regarded as the ambassadors of the CSMA Music School and are role models for all of our music students and their families.

“the comraderie and egalitarianism of a jazz combo cuts across age, gender and everything else. there’s the 14-year-old pianist and clarinetist, the 20-something drummer and the middle-aged bassist all agreeing on what to play and how to play it, communicating with their instrument as well as by voice. and the teacher is so genuinely positive; his energy permeates the room!”

CSMA’s Camp Program provides children the opportunity to express, explore, create and enjoy the arts in a relaxing, safe and fun environment. Our faculty of professional artists, musicians and arts educators

creates a stimulating, nurturing experience for young artists to share the joy of making art, music and new friends.

With more than 75 camps offered every year, the program provides a diversity of choices designed to expose your child to the rich multi-cultural, multi-faceted world of the arts. A low teacher-student ratio ensures individualized attention. Projects provide the opportunity for campers to work on their own and on collaborative projects. End-of-camp exhibitions and performances provide young artists the chance to share with family and friends and to showcase their creations.

CSMA’s year-round camp program offers sessions during school vacations (Dec, Feb, Apr) and throughout the summer (June-Aug). Flexible enrollment options (half- and full-day) allow you to create a schedule that meets your child’s needs and is convenient for your family.

The CSMA Camp Experience. . . where art, music, memories and friends are made!

AnnualReport2010-11

As this catalog goes to press, I have been at CSMA in an “official” capacity, as its executive director for approximately 275 days but I have been here in spirit since I was a 7-year-old taking piano lessons at a community music school in Trenton, N.J. That experience changed my life and helped to set the course for who I am today and why coming to CSMA is “coming home” for me.

For several years prior to coming to CSMA I had the privilege of working at the Hewlett Foundation, being a non-profit “investment banker” supporting artists and arts organizations. My position as a funder provided a wonderful education about global issues and trends in arts, education and many other fields and was a singular opportunity for me to fund and facilitate important work, but I also knew that my vantage point was from the “ivory tower.”

What I love about CSMA is that every single day, I have a front row seat seeing and hearing what happens when dedicated teachers work with students, igniting that spark of creativity and joy that is unique to the arts, and yes, even changes lives.

And so, coming to CSMA takes me “full circle” to the setting where as a student I first experienced that spark of creativity that has continued throughout my life -- as I became a singer, lyricist, arts grant maker, educator and advocate and now, as CSMA’s executive director.

Our annual report provides a retrospective of one year. For me, CSMA, an institution approaching its 45th year, represents a retrospective of my life’s commitment, both personally and professionally, to the arts and to the importance of Arts for All! It’s great to be home in a place that is changing lives!
