The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO. What Paris is to France, Dubrovnik is to Croatia, a town that has always been an inspiration for many local artists; painters and sculptures in particular
Modern Art Gallery Dubrovnik
Just a short walk away from the Old
Town, the wonderful former Banac
Mansion contains four floors and nine rooms of exhibition
space, with a permanent
collection that includes many
works by Cavtat-born Vlaho
Bukovac, alongside challenging
contemporary shows
The Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik was founded in 1945
The building now occupied by the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik was originally conceived and built as the showcase residential mansion (1935-1939) of Dubrovnik ship owner Božo Banac, and in 1948 it was converted into exhibition premises and museum.
