Aerostitch Darien, Vega and lots more.

Competitors Alpinestars and Aerostitch Darien will be explained briefly in the next page.

Page | 7

Motorcycle safety should be an area of extreme concern for all motorists. Certain

precautions should be taken prior to hitting the road.

The classes stress the importance of protective and high visibility clothing. In the

event of a crash, the rider will only have their protective clothing between them and

the road.

As mentioned earlier, personal protective gear such as jackets, boots, pants, helmet

and gloves are imperative to motorcycle safety. Nothing protects a rider more from a

crash than a helmet and a good set of jacket.

*Note this: the principal of the thermostat is used in the design of this rainwear.

A thermostat is a device for regulating the temperature of a system so that the

system's temperature is maintained near a desired set point temperature. The

thermostat does this by switching heating or cooling devices by on or off.

3.0 Problem Finding

In problem finding stage, we are about to obtain different perspective regarding our

product and that is by using analytical techniques such as Laddering Technique and

Lateral Thinking Technique. The Lateral Thinking Technique is brought by Edward de

Bono. This method provides a listing from general to more specific by moving

downwards. Laddering Technique is invented by Richards. This technique involves the

creation, reviewing and modification of hierarchical knowledge, often in the form of

ladders.

3.1 Problem Statement

Who, When, Why, What, Where and How?

Who is the market target for selling Thermo rainwear?

When can the consumers use Thermo rainwear?

Why do customers should prefer to purchase Thermo rainwear rather than the current

rain outfits in the market?

What are the functions of Thermo rainwear?

Where will be the location and market of the Thermo rainwear?

How to use Thermo rainwear?

Refer to next page for the answers in Laddering Technique and Lateral Thinking

Technique is located in page 13.

4.0 Idea Generation

Idea Generation or Ideation represents the creative process of generating, developing,

and communicating new ideas, where an idea is understood as a basic element of

thought that can be visual, concrete, or abstract. As such, it is an essential part of the

design process, both in education and practice.

There are 6 techniques that we will cover in this segment which are Mind Mapping,

SCAMPER, Attribute Listing, Concept Fan, Lotus Blossom and Force Fitting Trigger.

4.1 Mind Mapping

Mind Mapping is a diagram to represent words, ideas and other items, which is linked

and arranged around a central keyword or idea. In this technique, we will use software

(Edraw Max) to draw the branches and the relative text tags to broaden the product

ideas.

The Mind Mapping diagram is in the next page.

4.5 Lotus Blossom

The Lotus Blossom technique was originally developed by Yasuo Matsumura. First, we need to draw up Lotus Blossom diagram made up of a square in the center of the diagram and eight other squares surrounding the square.

Then, we write the central idea or problem in the center of the diagram. After that, look for ideas or solutions for the central theme and find the solutions for the sub themes.

The Lotus Blossom diagram is in the next page.

4.7 Summary of Ideas

Mind Mapping Mind Mapping is a diagram to represent words, ideas and other items,

which is linked around a central keyword or idea. The mind maps

encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational

tasks. The ideas can be presented in a radial, graphical and non-

linear manner.

SCAMPER SCAMPER is a strategy that can be used to assist students to think of

changes, which are able to create a new product by enhancing the

current product. It is a tool to support creative, divergent thinking.

Attribute Listing Attribute Listing is a good technique to use in conjunction with some

other creative techniques, especially idea-generating ones like

brainstorming. This allows us to focus on one specific part of a

product or process before generating a whole lot of ideas.

Concept Fan Concept Fan is a way of discovering alternative approaches to a

problem when we have discarded all obvious solutions. It develops

the principle of 'taking a step back' to get a broader viewpoint.

Concept Fans helps to find new approaches to problem solving, when

we have rejected all obvious solutions.

Lotus Blossom Lotus Blossom is a creative-thinking technique that helps to expand

our thinking and generate ideas. This technique possibly provides

best solutions to the problems addressed. This technique resembles

the Attribute Listing technique.

Force Fitting Trigger Force Fitting Trigger provides the motivation to help in finding out

sparkling ideas in people’s minds. This technique is a combination of

attributes that used to generate a new concept which resembles the

product.

in the next page. For more information about the wiring connections, please refer to the

User’s Manual book.

Thermo rainwear is designed to operate from a vehicle’s standard 12 volt electrical

system to provide unmatched levels of warmth and comfort. With this apparel, wearers

can be warm without the bulk and discomfort typically caused by excessive layers of

clothing. By providing increased warmth and mobility in cold temperatures, the rainwear

helps reduce fatigue while increasing safety and enjoyment.

Thermo rainwear is heated by a series of durable carbon fiber heating elements, which

generate safe, electronically controlled infrared heat. In addition to safe and even

heating, carbon fiber elements are lightweight, flexible and safe to operate in wet

conditions. It is carbon fiber’s light weight and flexibility that allows garments to fit

comfortably under protective riding apparel.

Heat is transferred to the wearer through close contact between the garment and the

wearer’s body. It is recommended that no more than one thin layer of clothing be worn

under Thermo rainwear. Thick layers such as sweatshirts and sweatpants, increase the

space between the garment and the wearer, decreasing the effectiveness of the heating

elements. Sizes available for rain pant, rain jacket and rain gloves are such as S, M, L,

XL, and XXL.

The specific price: $400

The price is slightly high for Asian countries consumers but it is quite cheap for

countries which are using USD currency. This product is quite cheap compared to other

competitor’s product. This is because it is a combination of 3 products together and it

contains new technologies.

6.0 Idea Evaluation

In this section, we will cover on Force Field Analysis, Sticking Dots and Plus, Minus,

Interesting Analysis.

6.1 Force Field Analysis (FFA)

Force Field Analysis is a method used to get a whole view of all the forces for or against

a plan so that a decision can be made which takes into account all interests. In effect

this is a specialized method of weighing pros and cons.

Where a plan has already been decided on, force field analysis allows you to look at all

the forces for or against the plan. It helps you to adjust the plan to reduce the impact of

the opposing forces, and strengthen and reinforce the supporting forces.

The Force Field Analysis diagram is in the next page.

The suggestions of minimizing the restricting factors:

Currently the product material for rain jacket, rain pant and rain gloves are using

nylon. Thus, to reduce the cost of producing them, we could change the material to

PVC. The main factor we are inventing this product is to be used in rain. If we want to

use in different weathers, the whole design have to be changed and this new product

will be totally different. This step should be avoided. It is not environment friendly

because currently, we are using battery as power source. We could use solar power to

make it environment friendly. The safety factor could be reduced by ensuring the cables

are not loose and the voltage consumption can be reduced from 12V to 9V. The cables

can be adjusted neat and tidy to avoid dangling wires around the motorcycle.

The suggestions of maximizing the driving factors:

The benefits and functions could be added more by enhancing the product

features. Thus, there will be more customers that will buy this product. Example,

redesigning the product to a fast wearing apparel, it will enhance the rainwear. Currently

the warranty of this product is 2years. By increasing the period of warranty, the quality

of the product will be increased.

7.0 Conclusion

The Thermo rainwear provides increased warmth and mobility in cold temperatures;

hence, the apparel helps to reduce fatigue while increasing safety and enjoyment. For

instance, the whole rainwear including the heat control unit is water-proof

The rainwear is electrically heated apparel is powered by a 12 volt electrical system. For

the moment, it is not environment friendly. In the future, we could use the solar power

instead of battery.

All techniques have been used to determine whether the product is viable or not.

According to questionnaires, the rating is quite high. Thus, we feel that the product will

be feasible within 5 years.

If this product is feasible within 5 years, we will design another product which can be

used for both hot and rainy weather.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermostat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thermostat

A thermostat is a device for regulating the temperature of a system so that the

system's temperature is maintained near a desired set point temperature. The name is

derived from the Greek words thermos "hot" and statos "a standing". The thermostat

does this by switching heating or cooling devices on or off, or regulating the flow of a

heat transfer fluid as needed, to maintain the correct temperature.

A thermostat may be a control unit for a heating or cooling system or a component part

of a heater or air conditioner. Thermostats can be constructed in many ways and may

use a variety of sensors to measure the temperature. The output of the sensor then

controls the heating or cooling apparatus.

The first electric room thermostat was invented in 1883 by Warren S. Johnson.[1][2]

Common sensor technologies include:

Bimetallic mechanical or electrical sensors

Expanding wax pellets

Electronic thermistors and semiconductor devices

Electrical thermocouples

Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)

Latest in our line of rain suits the RR01 comes with a host of features allowing the rider

to beat the torrential outpour in our tropical climate. Using a ‘heat sealing’ process on

the seams and joints the durable outer material prevents tear due to windblasts with

further reinforcements from full Velcro banding alleviating water seepage, while the

buttoned cuffs and extra wide waistband provides a snug fit, reducing flap when riding.

Safety features is no doubt one of the plus points in our rainsuits with the use of

reflective stripes on the back and a reflective logo in front, offering high visibility when

riding during dark stormy weather.

Wet soggy shoes will be a thing of the past with our current range of waterproof rain

shoes. Made of a100% waterproof and durable material that can withstand frequent use

on the road and yet remain water tight without tearing, the sole of the shoe consists of

high quality rubber with non-slip patterned ribbing, that provides good grip on the foot

pegs enabling the rider to change gears smoothly without slipping. Practical and easy to

use by just slipping over the normal shoe it enables you to ride without the distractions

of wet uncomfortable shoes, thereby allowing you to concentrate when riding on the

road.

Features like elastic cuffs and Velcro straps to contain the rain shoe neatly plus side

zippers for the convenience of tucking the trousers into the rain shoe all adds to the

practicality and ease of use. While not neglecting the safety aspect, the inclusion of

reflective stickers and logos on the sides and back of the shoes enhances visibility

during dark and wet weather riding.

Executive summary: The top suits are, in no particular order, the Aerostitch Darien (loose fitting for comfort), the Aerostitch Roadcrafter (tight fitting for sporty riding), the AlpineStar Drystar Edge, the Belstaff Discovery, and the Firstgear Kilimanjaro. I am completely comfortable recommending any of these - if you can afford them, they will give long service and satisfaction.

The main reasons to want a riding suit are for protection in case of a fall; because they are substantially (but not perfectly) waterproof; and because the good ones go on and off quickly. So, you can put on your work clothes, put a riding suit on over your work clothes in about 30 seconds, drive to work in pretty much any temperature from about 45° to 90°, rain or shine, and get there in decent shape. It then takes about 30 seconds to remove the riding suit.

Whatever you buy, it's important it be comfortable or you won't want to wear it. The Aerostitch people will work with you until you are happy. The other products have to fit off the rack, so it's important you try them on before buying. Particularly the one piece suits, where if your body dimensions are at all unusual they will not be a good fit. I, for example, cannot wear a Firstgear one piece because when the top fits me, the legs are too long.

There are numerous stories on the internet of people falling down in all of the products below and walking away unscathed. Aerostitch stands out after a crash in repairing or replacing their garments at reasonable prices. It's moderately likely that after a significant crash you would have to replace the other products here.

Generally speaking, the Aerostitch products do not seal against wind, but seal reasonably well against rain. For this reason they're comfortable into the low 90s. However, somewhere in the mid-60's you're likely to want to put on the liner or a sweatshirt or something. Aerostitch suits are, as the brits say, 'quite dear.' Their pricing is 25% - 50% higher than anyone else. The AlpineStar, Belstaff and Kilimanjaro are both reputed to be more waterproof than the Aerostitch. Belstaff invented motorcycle riding gear, and they remain one of the very best manufacturers. They're in the UK, so availability in the US is spotty. The Kilimanjaro has the best venting, and is therefore comfortable at higher temperatures than the Aerostitch or Belstaff. Unfortunately, the Kilimanjaro has a completely inadequate liner, and because of this is pretty much useless below about 40°.

Alpinestars Apex Jacket. Waterproof, breathable, adjustable collar. Back, shoulder and elbow protection. Removable quilted liner, reflective piping, 4 external, 2 internal pockets. About $270.

Firstgear Kilimanjaro jacket is waterproof 330 denier Hypertex, Sheltex membrane for breathability. Shoulder, back & elbow armor, 2-port vent system, Zip-out, wearable fleece jacket liner is 1 year warranty. Perhaps the most waterproof jacket here, but the price for this is it's relatively difficult to get in and out of the jacket, or into the pockets. Excellent venting makes this a good choice for riding in higher temperatures. Worthless liner makes this a poor choice for colder weather, below 40°. I rode in one of these for a year, 24,000 miles. About $260.

Aerostitch Darien 2-piece suit. 500 denier Cordura® nylon with an integral multi-layer Gore- Tex® laminate that sheds rain and wind. Shoulder, knee and elbow pads. Looser fitting, for those culinary-oriented tours. About $800.
