It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Dance Bytes 2006. This season, popular with audiences now for well over twenty years, is characterised by an exciting range of dance styles. The programme's choreographers bring diverse backgrounds to the performance arena from our International guest Ong-Yong Lock, to the emerging choreographic practices of postgraduate students Claire Marshall and Hui-Chun Peng, to the professional and established practices of Australian's Sue-Ellen Chester MacCarthy and myself.

Providing our artists-in-training with showcase opportunities is a key focus of ou.Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programme. Many of these final year students arfortunate enough to be extending their season with a trip to Hong Kong to perform Ong-Yang Lock's work at the Hong Kong Dance Festival 2006 - this time alongside students from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts . This is a significant artistic and cultural exchange for our young ambassadors of dance.

We hope you will enjoy this celebration of dance from our fresh and enthusiastic home-grown and international talent and thank you for encouraging their development through your ongoing support.

Deshabille: French for 'undress'. Deshabille is a term which came to r~nr~c:~n1 dressing in an intentionally careless manner. It referred to the acceptance of house dress in the 17th &18th century as street clothing which in turn influenced and loosened up formal court dress .

. . . next to no clothing, there is nothing more ravishing than an easy deshabille. The Connoisseur (1754).

Thank you to the 18th century court for the inspiration, to my collaborators, visual artist Sandra Dean and composer, Andrew Boughen, both gentle and fine aesthetic influences, and to the dancers for their sensitive and imaginative play.

From Pac Man to Space lnvad(3rs ... from Cabaret Voltaire to The Human League .. . from Tron to Electric Dreams ... from Pop-Lockin' to Body Rockin ', Zombots is inspired by all things early 80's!

Zombots is the product of eternally living in the 80's; clunky computer games, minimal ~lectro music, 80's special FX film technology, and bold, BOLD, outra­geous fashions! Specifically, Zombots is stepping into an 80's computer game, from inserting 20 cents, starting up, and playing until game over; It's pro­grammed entertainment!

The projection of the computer game in Zombots was inspired by short film called ACE, (directed by Grant Marshall , in 1999). ACE featured an arcade game called ,Galaga, which was one of the most popular games released by Namco in 1981. Hence, Zombots is dedicated to my brother Grant, 80's guru . a no Galaga champion!

This work w~s partially inspired by French symbolist poet, Stephane Mallarme's The Afternoon of a Faun. It will appear as part of a larger work, to be jointly performed by QUT, West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts , at the 2006 Hong Kong Dance Festival in June 2006.

SHAARON BOUGHEN - Choreographer MA Uni of Kent, BA(Hons) Laban Centre, UK

Shaaron has choreographed over 30 works and received grants from The Australia Council, Arts Queensland and QUT. She has worked as an independent artist with the Cherry Herring Collec­tive from 1996-2000 and with Emergency 2001-2002.

Her main focus of work lies in the scholarship of interdisciplinarity through Creative Practice. Shaaron's current practice is drawing from and developing her interest in the disciplines of architecture, digital mediums and visual arts. These areas of study inform her PhD studies in Artistic Reversioni as Creative Production.

Shaaron recently created an installation for the windows of The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in collaboration with visual artist Sandra Dean . She has an extensive design background from theatre works to product launches to pyrotechnics and has designed costumes for works by many leading Australian choreographers . Shaaron is also the Brisbane dance reviewer for The Australian .

SUE-ELLEN CHESTER-MACCARTHY- Choreographer Dip. Performing Arts(Theatre) QUT

Sue-Ellen began her career with the Queensland Theatre Company in 1982 and was head hunted to perform the role of 'Anybodys' in West Side Story in 1983. She also performed the role of 'Graziella' in the 1995/1996 Australian/New Zealand season of West Side Story.

Her career has seen her work with many reknowned choreographers including Meryl Tankard, Chrissie Koltai , Tony Bartuccio, Ross Coleman, Jane Beckett, Magaret Chapple and Stephen Page. Now a sought after teacher and choreographer, her teaching credits include some well renowned dance institutions including Sydney Dance Co Studios, UNSW, NAISDA, ED5, Brent Street Studios, Dance World 301 , Dance Intensity Workshops, American Jazz Dance Affiliation Workshops (New Zealand) and professional dance companies such as D'arc Swan, AIDT, Chunky Moves and Bangarra.

Sue-Ellen has choreographed theatrical productions, television commercials, music videos and was an assistant to choreographer Stephen Page at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Sue-Ellen has been a personal fitness trainer & personal movement coach to a number of actors , singers and dancers, has been presenter for AOK Health Australia , rehearsal director for the production 'lnTentCity' by choreographer Raymond Blanco, Sydney Opera House and was choreographer for the opening of the CSTD Dancers Convention, QPAC Brisbane 2005.

ONG-YONG LOCK - Choreographer

Ong joined Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) in 1989, and performed leading roles in the Company's productions of Suppressed Romance and The Snow is Red. He then joined City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in 1993 and danced main roles in Nine Songs, Revolutionary Peking Opera, In the Beginning, Wandering in the Cosmos, and China wind, China

fire. He has toured with CCDC to Mainland China, Taiwan, USA, Germany, UK, Korea, Japan, France and Israel.

In 1998, Ong traveled to Australia to perform with Expressions Dance Company during the Brisbane Festival. In the same year, he was invited to teach contemporary dance in Japan and Malaysia as well as choreograph for the 19th Chinese Dance Festival in Malaysia.

Ong was a founding member of South 'ASLI' Dance Workshop (SADW) and was the Artistic Director of the company during 1997-2001 . Over the years, he has created several highly acclaimed works, including Blue Birds, Insects, as well as creating Wandering Syndrome, The Changing of Colors, and Transitions for HKDC and One Night Fling for CCDC. His choreographic talents speak for

~emselves in the productions of Traveling Secretly to Batik, The Multi-colored .at and At Dusk. Ong took part in the International Sino Dance Week and the

Malaysian Chinese Dance Festival with The Girl Next Door and Wandering Ghosts respectively and was producer for The Leftover Damage and Cage. His works Sat Sa and The Evening Child were invited to be performed at the East Dragon Dance Festival 2000 and World Dance 2000 in Tokyo.

In 2002, Ong founded Unlock Dancing Plaza with Elise Chau and was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Award for his choreography of 4 In for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts . Ong is one of the most promising choreographers in Hong Kong. Important works include Same Time Tomorrow, Whatever; Dumb Move, 10 Nights ' Wanderings and 10 Nights Ill- The Philosopher's Stone.

CLAIRE MARSHALL - Choreographer BA (Dance), QUT

Claire Marshall is an emerging choreographer who has choreographed dance in many fields. Since graduating from OUT's Bachelor of Arts (Dance) in 2000, her work has covered a broad spectrum, ranging from the Savage Garden Affirmation World Tour, the Crush 1980-Me clip for Darren Hayes, film clips

for The Living End, The Sleepy Jackson, and interactive movement on the web. Her contemporary work features a unique movement vocabulary fusing contemporary dance with robot movement.

The past few years , Claire has staged four independent productions in Brisbane developing this movement fusion, and creating work around popular culture related themes, appealing to a diverse audience interested in pop culture . Claire is currently undertaking practice-led Masters research at QUT and endeavours to continue her career in dance, taking robotic fusion in her choreography to new heights.

HUI-CHUN PENG - Choreographer BFA (Dance), QUT

Hui-Chun was born in Taiwan and began dancing when she was 9 years old . After graduating from Tao-Yuan High School in Taiwan, she enrolled at QUT where she completed the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (Dance) in 2004. During her time at QUT Hui­Chun performed in numerous works by national and international choreographers including Susan Wang, Evan Jones, Rosetta

Gavin Webber, Maggi Sietsma, Ricky Sim, Jeffrey Tan, Csaba Buday and Ming­Shen Ku. She was also one of nine graduating students who participated in a collaborative exchange project between Creative Industries Dance, QUT and the Taipei National University of the Arts, culminating in a performance presented at the 2004 CORD/WDA-Asia Pacific International Conference and festival held in Taiwan.

She is currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts degree at QUT. Her work Monkey Business was presented at The Loft in May and also at the 2005 Malaysian Dance Festival in Kuala Lumpur in July. Flow was performed for The Workroom at Expressions Dance Theatre in August, and further developed for the postgraduate show at Woodward Theatre in September 2005.

JASON ORGAN - Lighting Designer AssocDipAT, BCAE

Jason graduated from Brisbane College of Advanced Education, now QUT, in 1988. He is co-founder of JLX Productions, a Queensland based design and technical consultancy, whose clients stretch from community theatre groups, major arts organisations and festivals, to corporate presentation and events. Jason's design credits include Figaro Variations, Power

and Sonata for Ten Hands for Rock and Roll Circus, The Little Mermaid, Giselle ~d E-motion for Queensland Ballet, The Tale of Monkey for Grin & Tonic Theatre .upe, The Road To Mecca and Sitcom Festival for Queensland Theatre

WEI WEI LIM -Assistant to Choreographer (Ong-Yong Lock)

Based in Hong Kong, Wei Wei currently works as a freelance dance artist. She has performed in Indonesia (Surabaya Art Festival), Singapore, and Xi'an, China. Wei Wei worked on a collaborative production with Malaysian-born artist, Ng Teck

Voon in Holland, as well as performing with Hong Kong Dance Company in 8/F Platform Environmental Dance. She will perform in Ong-Yong Lock's Jumping Frames during the 2006 Hong Kong Dance Festival.

TIFFANY WANG -Animator BFA (Communication Design) QUT

Tiffany Wang graduated with a BFA (Communication Design)in 2004 from QUT. Tiffany was the projection artist in QUT's production of Terrain! Terrain! Terrain! and has also created projection work for Watermark, a segment in 2004's Riverfestival. Tiffany is currently working as a freelance animator in film and TV.

Interactive, intercultural and interdisciplinary, accented body is a series of performance installations created by over 30 artists from Australia, Korea, UK, Japan and Malaysia. Four site teams explore the concept of body as site and in site, live and virtual, through animating indoor and outdoor architectures across the Creative Industries Precinct and the Kelvin Grove Urban Village . You are invited to play within and amongst the interac­tive sites as well as enjoy a performance journey across all sites to the final site where you may relax over a drink with the option of revisiting your favourite installations.
