CRE:8’s creative industries courses at Jewel & Esk College give you access to top of the range equipment and full support from our experienced lecturers.

Sound production students use world class desks from SSL and Toft favoured by the world’s top producers, TV students have access to green screen technology and Avid editing suites, games designers use the latest software to bring their ideas to life, while music students rehearse and perform in our 96 seat auditorium, as well as venues in the city. Successful students have progressed to various university courses, or moved straight into the industry.

HNC/HND Music Attend Full time Duration HNC 1 year HND 2 years Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF Equivalent to 7 and 8

What is the course about? You will study three areas of the popular music industry; Music technology, Music business and Practical musicianship. This will include instrumental tuition, performance, MIDI sequencing, sound production techniques and marketing. The subject areas covered will help you develop your instrumental, organisational and research skills.

How do I get a place? You will be invited to attend an audition and interview as part of the selection process where you will perform two contrasting pieces that you have prepared in advance to demonstrate your technical and musical ability. You can perform on guitar, bass guitar, drums or vocals. Ideally, you will have NC Higher Music and grade 3 Music Theory (ABRSM) or equivalent as well

as Communication and Numeracy at SCQF level 5 (minimum).

Where could the course lead me? Students experience a noticeable rise in levels of confidence, knowledge and musical proficiency having completed this course. On completion of this course students often go on to study at degree level at Edinburgh’s Napier University, at various Music Academies in the UK or go into employment within the music or related industries.

HNC/HND Music BusinessAttend Full time Duration HNC 1 year HND 2 years Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 7/8

What is the course about? You’ll gain specialised knowledge of all major areas of the industry, including scouting for new music acts, managing artists’ careers, the evolving nature of record companies, promoting music events, as well as legal issues including contracts and how to protect your musical work. You will also be able to play a role in the College’s own record label, FEAST records.

How do I get a place? To join the course you must show a strong interest in music, live music events and business management – some previous experience would be an advantage. You should also have at least 1 Higher plus Numeracy and Communication at SCQF level 5.

NQ Intermediate 2 Introduction to Music Technology Attend Full time Duration 6 months (January start only) Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF Equivalent to 5

What is the course about? This course is a good starting point for anyone interested in a career in music, sound engineering or music programming. It’s an exciting, hands‑on course with time spent in the recording studio.

How do I get a place? It is expected that you will have some qualifications at SCQF level 4, preferably in Music, Computing and English. You will be interviewed before acceptance to the course and you will be expected to show a keen interest in and commitment to the course, bringing a portfolio of any creative work you have produced. Good computer knowledge would be an advantage.

Where could the course lead me? You might want to consider returning to college to progress to an NC Higher in Music or Sound Production. Alternatively, you might prefer to move into work as a musician, sound engineer or music programmer. sound production. Where could the course lead me? Previous students have gone onto degree programmes in Music Business, Event Management, Commercial Music and Law. Other career options are exciting and varied, with previous students working in marketing or promotions within the music industry, or music publishing or management.

NC Higher Music Attend Full time Duration 1 year Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF Equivalent to 6

What is the course about? You will study musicianship (first instrument, keyboard, percussion, music theory, aural training, band work, songwriting), music technology (MIDI sequencing, recording techniques), music business (Creative Industries) and core skills (Communications, Numeracy and IT). The course concentrates on listening, inventing and performing.

FEAST RecordsFEAST records, the college’s new record label, aims to work with young Scottish acts that we believe to be stars of the future. Using our industry experience and fantastic facilities, staff and students will nurture and develop the acts.

Students also run Far East, our Music Business blog, which incorporates news about the FEAST record label and forms a valuable part of the Jewel & Esk learning experience.

NC (Higher) Media Attend Full time Duration 1 year Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 6

What’s the course about? This is an exciting, hands-on course that will give you a broad coverage of digital media studies. This is a project‑led course with an emphasis on teamwork and you will develop strong interpersonal skills. You will be making short video and radio programmes as well as designing flash animation for websites and computer games.

How do I get a place? You will need to have a minimum of 3 SQA Qualifications at Credit or Int 2 level (SCQF level 5). Preferred subject areas would be Computing, CDT, Media Studies and English.

Where can it take me? If you complete the course successfully, you could progress to study at HNC/HND level in Creative Industries courses such as Television, Interactive Media or 3D Animation.

HND 3D Computer Animation Attend Full time Duration HND 2 years Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 9

What is the course about? Whether it be designing and creating architectural 3D fly-throughs or modelling and animating 3D characters and scenery for short films for TV and Advertising or even animating 3D character models and building environments for computer games then this course will provide

the basic and specialist skills you need. The software we use is state of the art and comprises of the following by Autodesk: Maya 2012, 3D Studio Max 2012 Softimage 2012, Motionbuilder 2012, Mudbox 2012 as well as SmithMicro Poser 2010 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

How do I get a place? You will need 1 Higher or 3 relevant NQ units at SCQF Level 6 (including numeracy and communication at SCQF level 5). If you don’t have formal qualifications, you can bring a portfolio of your work to interview and you may still be considered for a place.

HNC/HND Interactive Media (Web Development) Attend Full time Duration HNC 1 year HND 2 YearsLocation Edinburgh Campus SCQF 7/8

What is the course about? This course will take you through planning, designing, publishing and maintaining several varied websites. The course focuses on social networking integration, search engine optimisation and all sites are developed to W3Cvalidation standards. Along with this you will study audio and video production for the web, database creation and manipulation using SQL and more. You will also have the opportunity to develop a live website. The course uses the Adobe Creative Suite software. How do I get a place? You will need 1 Higher or 3 relevant units at higher level as well as SCQF level 5 numeracy and communication. You will also need IT skills or have

studied a computing/multimedia related Couse previously. If you don’t have the formal qualifications stated above you can bring a portfolio of your work to interview that demonstrates a keen interest in Web Development and /or Multimedia.

Where can it take me? Successful students have progressed as freelance web designers in the Creative Industries and on to degree courses at Edinburgh’s Napier University in Interactive Media Design, Digital Media and at Abertay University in Computer Arts and Visual Communication and Design.

Courses at NC (Higher)

Sound Production Attend Full time Duration 1 year Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 6

What is the course about? This course covers the main areas about producing and engineeringmusic tracks, from Electronic Music through to live rock and metal.

How do I get a place? You will be invited to attend an interview where you can demonstrate your passion for music production with a CD or Mp3 you have produced. Basic experience of using microphones and recording music software would be preferred, alternatively skills in DJing using music software or other. You are expected to have qualifications at SCQF level 5, preferably in Music, Computing, English and Numeracy but others will be considered.Communication and Music would be an advantage.

Where could the course lead me? Successful completion of this course leads to studies at HND level (Sound Production, Music or Music Business) and then to degree level studies at university. Career opportunities exist as artists, DJs, music producers or Sound Technicians.

Where could the course lead me? Previously successful students have progressed to degree level courses at Glasgow Caledonian University, Perth UHI and the University of Abertay. Career opportunities exist as a live sound or studio engineer, film and games sound designer, AV technician, radio producer, studio designer and community music specialist.

HND Sound Production Attend Full time Duration HND 2 years Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 8

What is the course about? In this advanced project‑based course you will learn to produce music to a professional standard as well as the theory underpinning sound production. You will use software such asPro Tools, Ableton Live, Cubase and Reason with the SSL AWS900+ and Toft ATB24 mixing desks. There are also many opportunities to take part in work placements at various venues and festivals in and around Edinburgh.

How do I get a place? You will be invited to attend an interview with an example of your music production skills before being accepted onto the course. It is expected that you will have Numeracy and Communication at SCQF level 5 as well as 1 Higher or 3 Units at Higher level in a relevant subject.

HND TelevisionAttend Full time Duration HND 2 years Location Edinburgh Campus SCQF 8

What is the course about? This is a practical course. The 1st year will cover the fundamental skills required for camera, sound and editing operations. A series of projects building in complexity build skills and confidence while in the 2nd year you will specialise in work for external clients which will prepare you for University level studies or the world or work in the Film and Television industry.

How do I get a place? You will need to have 1 Higher or 3 units at Higher level from Digital Media related subjects as well as Communication and Numeracy at SCQF level 5. Applicants with relevant work and life experience are also invited to apply to attend interview.

Where could the course lead me? Successful HND students have moved to degree level studies at University or to employment in the industry. Previous graduates are now working as directors, sound producers, editors, independent documentary producers and script writers.
