Cutting

Quilt designed by Sue Harvey and Sandy Boobar, Pine Tree Country Quilts

Pieced Blocks

1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each F square.

2. Place a marked F square right sides together on one end of a G rectangle. Stitch on the marked line, trim the seam allowance to 1/4" and press the F square to the right side. Repeat with a second F square on the remaining end of the G rectangle to complete 1 F-G unit. (Fig. 1) Repeat with all F squares and G rectangles to make 40 F-G units total.

3. Sew an F-G unit to opposite sides of an E square. Press seams toward the E square. Sew an H square to each end of two F-G units. Press seams toward the H squares. Join the 3 pieced strips to complete a 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" block. Press seams toward the center row. Repeat to make 10 blocks total. (Fig. 2)

Checkerboard Strips

1. Sew an A strip to a B strip to a C strip to a D strip along the length to make a strip set. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make 5 strip sets total. Cut the strip sets into (75) 2 1/2" segments. (Fig. 3)

2. Sew 25 segments together to make a strip, turning every other segment to reverse fabric order. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make 3 strips total. (Fig. 4)

3. Join the block rows, checkerboard strips and fairy strips, referring to the quilt photo for positioning of the rows and strips, to complete the 50 1/2" x 60 1/2" quilt center. Press seams in one direction.

4. Sew the 2 1/2" x WOF cream/pink print strips short ends together to make a long strip. Cut (2) 60 1/2" strips and (2) 54 1/2" strips. Sew the longer strips to the long sides and the shorter strips to the top and bottom.

2. Turn 1/4” under on 1 long edge of each 13” x 16 1/2” pillow backing rectangle. Press flat, and then turn under again 1/2”. Stitch along the folded edges to hem.

3. Place the quilted pillow top right side down. Place the backing pieces right side up on the pillow top, overlapping the hemmed edges in the center, to fit the pillow top, see the image below. Pin to hold together. Stitch ¼” around the outside edge to hold.
