By COL (Ret) Eugene Cheong

Hello Everyone ,

Once again, we find ourselves standing at the last quarter of the year! It gets quite a bit scary when the months just fly by like that. Where did all the time go? There were quite a few exciting things that happened in the last few months, and some events are yet to unfold in the coming months.

Welcome to New PresidentFirstly, I would like to give a warm welcome to Club President, MG Perry Lim. We all look forward to seeing him in the Club and playing at SCC golf course. I would also like to bid a warm farewell to our previous Club President, LG Ng Chee Meng. He has given us invaluable advice and guidance, and we thank him for all the support he has given to the Club. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

AGM FY 2014/15Once again, we have come to the time of the year where we hold our Annual General Meeting. This year was no exception, as members gathered at the banquet hall to attend the meeting, fronted by our panel consisting of eight EXCO members. The panel presented the financial plan for FY2015/2016, upgrades done for the Club facilities and Golf Course, as well as recapping the happenings of 2014 and 2015. The Annual General Meeting was a success, and I would like to thank you for it, especially your attendance and continual support for our Club.

Annual Survey 2015In July this year, we engaged a consultant, aAdvantage, to help us conduct a members’ satisfaction survey. First, let me thank all of you who have given your valuable time to participate in the survey. It was with your effort and support that the Club managed to complete the survey ahead of schedule. Your inputs

and feedback are important to us, and would provide us with a catalyst to strive for service excellence. I am encouraged to see from the survey results that there is a high level of member satisfaction. The staff are also very proud and happy that they are serving appreciative members who have acknowledged their efforts in providing good service. Naturally, there are areas to improve and we will put together an action plan to address those shortfalls.

SG50 Seniors Golf GameThis year, we celebrated Singapore’s 50th birthday with our members by organizing an SG50 Seniors Golf Game on 17 July 2015. This game was organized for all our senior golfers, and we were blessed with excellent weather as they pitted their golfing skills against one another. The event concluded with a sumptuous lunch followed by a lucky draw prize presentation – the top three winners received attractive prizes sponsored by Nikon!

National Day Family Carnival 2015We held the National Day Family Carnival on 15 August 2015. As the theme suggested, families were encouraged to come in colours of Red and White. The whole Club was decorated with buntings and national flags. As the carnival went on, you could see families queuing to get quick bites, such as muah chee and hotdog buns, or visiting the game booths for a chance to win prizes. The arts and craft stalls were also popular with the kids as they created their own painted cups and shrink art. Looking at their smiling faces, I am sure the families had an enjoyable time and are already looking forward to the next one.

President’s Cup 2015 & Mega Happy HourThe President’s Cup was held on the afternoon of 15

August 2014, followed by our Mega Happy Hour event in the evening. Our Guest-of-Honour, the previous Club President and CDF, LG (Ret) Ng Chee Meng, graced the occasion. The golf winners were awarded with medals, trophies and vouchers. The participants enjoyed the beautiful weather, the excellent golf course conditions, and of course, the lovely Mega Happy Hour dinner. It was quite a tough competition, but we could only have one overall champion. We heartily congratulate Mr Choo Teck Chuan, the winner of the President’s Cup 2015.

Official Re-Opening of Driving RangeNew beginnings – that’s what excite people. Following feedback from our members, and after some renovations to the Driving Range, we launched its official re-opening on 15 August 2015. The Driving Range was officially opened by our previous Club President and CDF, LG (NS) Ng Chee Meng, in conjunction with the President’s Cup. Now, members can enjoy a newly refurbished Driving Range, and an improved golf practice experience.

SLGA 26th Open Amateur ChampionshipThis year, SLGA held its 26th Open Amateur Championship at our Club. Contestants from Singapore and different parts of Asia came over to participate in the competition to give their best to fight to the top! The proud overall winner who emerged from the intense competition was Goh Jen, from Singapore. We received very positive feedback from the organisers that the golf course was in excellent condition. We’re indeed delighted that they chose us as the venue of choice for this event.

Outstanding Staff AwardThe Outstanding Staff Award is a quarterly award that

will be presented to staff who have provided good service to our members and guests. The nominees were taken from the compliments or feedback that we received through our feedback channels (yellow feedback form, website, Whatsapp, etc). The winners of the Outstanding Staff Award were then selected by a Selection Panel comprising members of the Executive Committee and Sub-Committees.

For the quarter of July to September 2015, the winners of the Outstanding Staff Award are Jay & Zurah from the Receptionist Department, Gai & Prema from the Golfing Dpeartment, Mandon from our Marshals, Othman from our Swimming Pool facility, John, Sawal, Candy, David, Amir, James, Tie Liang & Jamsari from our Operations Department. Congratulations to all of them!

Thank you for all your nominations, compliments and feedback. Do continue to write in to us about any of our staff who has provided you with excellent service. We recognise staff who have delivered happiness to you, or who has gone beyond his/her call of duty to render assistance to you. This would certainly encourage our staff to provide even better service to you.

ConclusionIt leaves me now to thank all of you, the members, for making the events that we had organised so memorable. Thank you so much for your support, and I look forward to more of your support for our future events.

Let me wish everyone a Happy Deepavali, and a Merry Christmas! I hope you all have a wonderful and enjoyable festive season ahead!

On 23 Sep 15, we held a very successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) to cap off another very positive year for us at the club. During the AGM, I shared with all members present on the initiatives and progress made over the past year, and I would like to share it here as well.

IMPROVING THE GOLF COURSE

Over the past year, the GC made several improvements to the golf course to enhance your golfing experience.

Golf course conditions were improved through the planting of additional trees on holes 7, 9 and 17, and the sandcapping of certain areas (between holes 1, 9 and 13) improved drainage and ground conditions. New entry points to hole 11 fairway and new path to hole 8 tee box were also constructed to reduce the discomfort caused to the buggies and their passengers when driving over these areas.

We also improved the aesthetics of our course through the installation of new buggy stakes and ropes all around the course to replace the old bamboo poles. The pins and flags for each hole were also coloured to improve the view of the green while enhancing the visibility of the pin.

The GC also recognised that a beautiful golf course comes to naught if not for a positive playing experience. As such, we also reviewed the KPIs of the

course maintenance to improve your overall golfing experience based on members’ feedback. Notably, the GC had incorporated members’ feedback into our course maintenance contract to improve the speed, consistency and appearance of our putting greens.

PROVIDING DIVERSE GOLFING OPPORTUNITIES

To provide you, our member, with greater opportunities to enjoy other golf courses in addition to our own, the GC established partnerships with numerous golf clubs both local and overseas. In the past year, the GC had strengthened our reciprocal relations with country clubs in popular holiday destinations. The new reciprocal clubs which are now available to you are the New Kuta Golf and Ocean View (Bali, Indonesia), Mystic Springs Golf Club (Hainan China), Song Be Golf and Country Club (Vietnam), The Vines Golf and Country Club (Perth Australia), The Cut (Perth Australia) and Kelab Golf Sarawak (Kuching, Malaysia). The broad array of overseas golfing destinations, coupled with our list of local reciprocal clubs would provide you with a wide range of golfing options.

In addition to the annual interclub game with our reciprocal golf clubs in Kuala Lumpur, we added a new destination for the interclub game this year - Sabah. Both these trips were very well-received by our members and we had received good and positive comments.

INCREASING PARTICIPATION IN COMPETITIVE GOLF

The participation in our club events continued to strengthen. In the past year, a record 70 members stepped forward to participate in our selection for league players. The SCC Open 2015, held on 15-16 May 15 and Ladies Day held on 15 May 15 also drew a record high of 258 men and 200 ladies respectively from country clubs all across the country. Several changes were also made to the monthly medal and these included changes to the handicap range for the various divisions to balance the numbers in each division, quarterly shot-gun start to enhance interaction among members after the game. These initiatives strengthened the demand for monthly medals and the GC also provided the option of having additional flights in the afternoon to address the increased demand. The resumption of play policy was also amended and successfully implemented in Feb 15. In addition, the GC led the organising and hosting of the 26th SLGA Amateur Open 2015, attracting top amateurs from around the world, including Singapore.

The GC worked closely with the club management to renovate our Driving Range to provide improved practice facilities. Newly opened in Aug 15, the new range had received positive feedback on the appearance and enhancement to their practice experience.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNICATION, COHESION AND ENGAGEMENT

The GC continued to build on our initiatives to strengthen communication with our members. The monthly GC updates bring the latest policy changes to our members as well as the quarterly Captain’s Column.

In addition, the GC launched a series of initiatives to recognise and appreciate our Pioneers. For the period from Jan 15 till Dec 15, the GC implemented a promotion for all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents aged 55 years and above, have already begun receiving a 50% discount for golfing fees on every 1st Wednesday of each month. This initiative was warmly welcomed by the pioneers who had participated. The GC also organised the SG50 Senior Golf Game on 17 Jul 15 where a total of 136 players participated. It received much positive feedback that many participants are

now requesting for it to become a yearly event. GC will be reviewing this in the next term.

The ladies committee had, through their engagement efforts, increased the interest levels of our lady members in our golfing activities and events. Notably, several ladies cohesion events were organised and there has been an increase in participation of our lady members in our monthly medals where a minimum of 24 players participated. This high level of ladies participation also had a positive impact on our high key events such as the SCC Ladies Day.

KEY FOCUS AREAS FOR THE COMING MONTHS

The GC will continue to pay close attention to continue to improve our course.

To enhance the safety our golf course, an additional tee-box will be constructed on hole 6, and the lady tee-box on hole 2 and hole 16 will be removed to provide a better view of the course. These initiatives will provide improved visibility of the golf course and reduce blind spots.

To further improve our course conditions, the GC will strengthen the maintenance of non-sandcapped areas and explore the option of sandcapping them if necessary, or to implement the usage of wood chips and sea hibiscus which could potentially suppress weed growth and improve course conditions.

Sembawang Country Club06

The GC will continue to work closely with the maintenance company to improve playing experience, with greater emphasis paid to ensuring greater consistency of greens and green speeds, targeted to be 8 to 8.5 on weekdays and >9 on weekends.

Even though we had attracted over 70 members to participate in our Inter-Club League Team selection, there were areas for improvement. The GC will review the selection process to enhance the experience, as well as strengthening our ability to identify a team which would best represent our club in the league.

The GC will continue to pro-actively seek ways to further strengthen our communication with our members through organising events such as Golf Forums to further strengthen dialogue with our members.

CHANGES TO THE GC TEAM

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and thank the following GC members who have left an indelible mark on the club through their efforts: LTC Ong Chew Meng, LTC Chin Seng Heng were exemplary Vice-Captains; Jenny Ong served well as the ladies Vice-Captain, was also supported by Mandhy Lee who contributed to the increased engagement of our lady members; MAJ(RET) Anthony Ang successfully established the wide range of reciprocal clubs which you can now enjoy; MAJ(NS) Koh Hong Soon and MWO(RET) Albert Chan had also contributed to the club as the Assistant Competitions Convenor and Assistant Greens Convenor respectively.

I would like to take this opportunity to also welcome on-board the new GC appointment holders. ME6 Teh Chong Ann and ME5 Evelyn Lim who would be joining us as Vice-Captain and Ladies Vice-Captain respectively. ME3 Andrew Ho was successfully elected as the new Handicap Convenor, and he would be assisted by CPT(RET) Goh Young Kwang as the Assistant Handicap Convenor. SWO Vincent Lee Yong Kwang has also been appointed as the Assistant Greens Convenor. To strengthen the vibrancy of our club and leverage on our new training facilities, ME5 David Bey and ME5 Mario Xie had also been added to the GC to strengthen our Junior Programme.

I am delighted to continue serving as Club Captain, and I hope that all members would continue to give the GC your fullest support as we continue our unwavering efforts to improve your golfing experience at our Sembawang Country Club.

Happy Golfing!

Golf Tips

Sourced by Mr Gilbert TanWith permission from Golf Digest

How to Beat Uneven Lies

Uphill

FIT THE CLUB: Going uphill, most golfers push the handle forward to avoid hitting the ball too high. To counter this, make sure the back edge of the sole is on the ground.

SET YOUR BODY: With the club correctly soled, take your address position. You want the butt of the grip pointing between your zipper and left hip, as it does on a normal shot, with the ball forward.

←SWING: Shots from uphill lies tend to fly higher (and shorter) and go left, so take more club and aim right. Swing up the slope.

Downhill

FIT THE CLUB: The tendency on a downslope is to drop the handle back to try to add loft to the clubface. Make sure the club’s leading edge is flush to the ground.

SET YOUR BODY: Again, build your setup around the correctly soled club. Point the butt of the grip between your zipper and left hip, and play the ball farther back than normal.

←SWING: Shots from downhill lies tend to fly lower and go right, so take less club and aim left. Swing down the slope, and don’t try to help the ball in the air.

Golf Tips

Ball above Feet

FIT THE CLUB: From this sideslope, the clubhead will tend to sit on its toe, so when you sole it be sure the heel touches the ground.

SET YOUR BODY: In effect, the angle of this slope makes the club longer, so stand taller and grip down an inch or two on the handle. The shaft will be more horizontal at address.

←SWING: The club moves more around your body, which creates more clubface rotation and can cause a right-to-left shot. Aim farther right to compensate. Also, expect a lower flight and more roll.

Ball below Feet

FIT THE CLUB: The clubhead will tend to rest on its heel. Raise the grip so the toe is on the ground.

SET YOUR BODY: The ground sloping away from you effectively shortens the club. Bend more from your hips and tilt your upper body forward to reach the ball. The shaft will be more vertical.

←SWING: The club moves more up and down, with less face rotation, which can produce a left-to-right shot. To allow for this curve to the right, aim farther left. Expect a higher ball flight and less roll.

On 15 August 2015, we celebrated National Day with a blast at the Club! It was our National Day Family Carnival. We had many fun activities lined up for children and their parents, and even grandparents! The Clubhouse was a buzz of excitement and we were happy to see families enjoying activities such as cup painting, caricature painting and the game booths! The children were thrilled to bring home their own hand painted cups and also, their own caricature painting! We definitely look forward to the next Family Carnival and hope you do too!

We are proud to announce that we have revamped our Driving Range!

The Driving Range Re-Opening Ceremony was dovetailed with the President’s Cup on 15 August 2015 and was officiated by the Club President for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The opening ceremony was attended by a sizable crowd and members enjoyed complimentary range balls from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Here are the new changes:The ball landing had been significantly improved; ground levelling – drainage system, repair of netting and replanting of turf to improve overall play. The lighting had been improved for night practice; Aesthetic improvements; new distance markers and target greens.

Do drop by to practice your golf swings with your kakis.

“Vijay from gents toilet was really helpful. I forgot my keys and he duly locked it and kept the keys on safe keeping. Thanks very much.” – Francis Kee, 23 Aug 2015

“The opening of our newly refurbished driving range is indeed an occasion all members should be proud of. In a way, the new range fully compliments the now much tested and ,therefore deservedly appointed, Sembawang Golf course. What a transformation - new coats of paint and touch ups of nooks and corners here and there.... nothing was spared as SCC celebrates, in conjunction with, our nation’s Golden Jubilee! Compliments and thank you to the management and all the staff of the Club.” – Joe Mao, 16 Aug 2015

“The interport game was good and very well organized outing. Every one in the organization committee did well in ensuring our smooth and timely completion of the game every each day till our return to the hotel. Besides Gai who always been an entertaining amicable ‘live-wire’ (keeping the smiles, even laughters on the bus and beyond), both first timers Prema & Farhan had shown much involvement in our entire event.” – Alan Chan, 2 Aug 2015

I am a regular at SCC and have brought guests to play there as well. Checking in for golf has always been a hassle free and pleasant experience for me, especially when Jay or Zurah is on duty. They are such people oriented front line staff and should be recognised as assets to the organisation. Jay and Zurah go that extra mile to help whenever the situation calls for it. – Peter Yeo, 30 Jun 2015

Rez is a quiet staff. However behind the quietness she is full of potential. She has organizational ability. I viewed that a project given was executed with great efficiency. She is very helpful as she has completed whatever were required with most accuracy and speed. She also always flashes a smile for all the members. – Lee Yian Tong, 18 Sept 2015
