MAISHA Improving maternal and newborn health Following the Emergency Obstetric Training (EmOC) in early November the MAISHA project shifted to the rural health facilities in Migori to conduct two‐week long trainings for Community Health Volunteers (CHVs). The Kenyan National Health Strategy, which MAISHA supports through capacity building and technical health center supports, is simplified in the model below: Essentially the CHVs are the key actors on the ground. They are recruited from within their communities and voted on in a public baraza (community meeting). CHVs include men and women of various adult ages. Their key responsibilities are to make home visits, gather health data from all households, promote healthy lifestyles and to inform the community of various health campaigns. The CHVs are supported and supervised by their local CHC and the community‐outreach CHEW (both of which are attached to their local health dispensary. MAISHA’s trainings are conducted by sub county health workers and the CHEW which will work directly with the CHVs. Typically 10‐15 CHVs are responsible for their community area, which can have a population up to 1000 households.
