This action plan seems to be working very well. Big thank you to all the parents that have supported this initiative as illegally parking seems to no longer be an issue. We have formalised a risk assessment in regards to parent parking and the school bus turning area which will be presented to the P&C tomorrow evening along with an updated site supervision risk assessment for Coorabell Public. Mrs Brown has taken leave for the following two weeks leaving our wonderful creative arts program in the very capable hands of Mrs Dyer. Check out the photo of 5/6’s latest visual art creations. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to attend the PSSA Football (soccer) trials for the Galuhndar District representative team: Girls-Edie, Rose, Hope, Annabel & Eden; Boys- Joshua, Jesua, Ryan, Harry & Asher. I would have nominated many more boys in particular this year as we have a very strong skill level in soccer but unfortunately was limited to only five nominations. Good luck kids! Congratulations to Yumi for her time & effort once again volunteering for Sea Shepherd and managing to raise $130. (continued over page)

Marley, Oliver and friends with some fantastic artwork

Huge congratulations and thank you to Blair and his merry men/woman/children who persevered through some very ordinary weather conditions to participate in our P&C Working Bee on Saturday. The work they did around our school grounds and even in the canteen is greatly appreciated and will benefit our Coorabell School significantly. Also see P&C News attached.

Big welcome to new student Lydia and her family to our Coorabell School community.

As you may know I have continued to play traffic warden each morning and afternoon. I have also asked the staff to park in the school car park

adjacent to the library to alleviate congestion and available parking for parents in the morning.

Thank you also to all the wonderful volunteers who have helped in the past.

Unfortunately our incredibly generous and talented P&C Treasurer, Simon Field, is no longer available to continue in the role. It would be wonderful if we could alleviate Simon from this position as soon as possible as a mark of respect for everything he has done for Coorabell Public School. If there is anyone who is interested Simon has offered to assist in a transitional period for the new treasurer. There will be a P&C meeting in the library commencing at 6pm tomorrow. The P&C has been a wonderful supporter for our school. All most welcome to attend and contribute to our Coorabell community in a most meaningful and beneficial manner.

Big thank you also to Claire (Sascha and Hugh’s mum) and Mia (Hunter P’s mum) for providing some delicious pizza and treat last Friday that was thoroughly appreciated by all that ordered.

Many thanks

Geoff Coghlan

PS. Don’t forget this Friday we have a school assembly and Class 2/3 will be presenting an item. All most welcome to attend.

HEALTH ADVICE Impetigo

There has been a number of reported incidence of impetigo at school over the past week.

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. It is commonly known as ‘school sores’ because a majority of cases are in school-aged children. However, it can also affect infants, adults and adolescents.

How is it spread?

Impetigo is very easy to catch from other people. Impetigo is usually spread through direct contact with other infected people.

The bacteria primarily enter through damaged skin. People with conditions causing long-term damage to their skin, such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, are at greater risk of infection.

How is it treated?

Depending on how bad the infection is, your doctor may recommend the use of an antibiotic ointment or oral antibiotics in severe cases. Antibiotic ointment should be continued until the sores have completely healed. If oral antibiotics are given it is important to finish the whole course of treatment (usually 5 days) and not stop when the impetigo starts to clear.

Sores should be cleaned every 8 – 12 hours, dried thoroughly and covered with a waterproof dressing. Bathing the blisters with salty water will help to dry them out (use saline solution or dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water). Communicable Diseases Factsheet Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the skin. Good hygiene helps prevent spread of infection. If antibiotics are given it is important to finish the whole course to make sure the impetigo will not recur.

How can you avoid spreading the infection?

While you have the infection:

Sores should be kept clean and covered with a waterproof dressing to prevent them being touched or scratched.

Used dressings should be placed in a sealed bag and put in the garbage bin as soon as they are removed.

Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and running water for 10 – 15 seconds after sores are touched or redressed.

Children with impetigo should be kept home from school or other group settings if their wounds cannot be kept covered until 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has been started, or until the blisters have dried out if antibiotics are not used.
