It’s hard to convince the managers and agents of some celebrities that a client’s time would be well spent being photographed for free by a photographer not known to them. But Terry Morris was determined to celebrate Welsh excellence, to recapture the spirit ofthoughtful, artistic photography, and to explore the lasting, positive effects of the ’90s Cool Cymru phenomenon. The process gathered an incredible head of steam, resulting in trips to places as diverse as Cardiff and Chelsea, Llanelli and LA. Those pictured includedfilm stars, music icons and sports heroes. This book tells the amazing story of how hemanaged to pull it off.

Ryan Giggs The thought process

Thursday, May 4, 2006

UMBERS can say as much aswords. Just ask a sportsstatistician. Or a bookie.

A glance at www.manutd.com, theofficial Manchester United website, following the club’s final game of the2005-06 season, reveals a collection ofnotable figures.

Two numbers stand next to the nameRyan Giggs. The figure 672 signifies thenumber of occasions the Welshman hasplayed for United during a fabulouscareer. The other – 134 – indicates howmany goals he’s scored.

The closest existing clubmate to rivalRyan’s appearances total is Gary Neville– more than 160 games behind on 507.

Only one man has more goals – theprolific specialist striker Ruud VanNistelrooy on 150.

Indeed, Ryan is one of only three men tohave played more than 600 games forUnited. Bill Foulkes and Sir BobbyCharlton are the others.

Photographer Terry Morris, however, isattracted by one of football’s moremodest numbers. As United facilities

manager Clive Snell explains the layoutof the Carrington academy complex, heleads Morris 60 or 70 yards to the end ofthe main building’s spinal corridor.

It’s well lit and is lined withmotivational panels highlighting pastUnited glories and heroes. It features aseries of rich red doors, each bearing7ft-tall numbers in bright white. Theystart at 1 and end at changing roomnumber 11.

“That’s Giggsy’s shirt number isn’t it?”says Terry. “He has that for Man U andfor Wales. I bet he’s never beenphotographed in front of that door. That’s got to be the picture.”

As Clive departs, Terry asks lighting manGraham Harries to pose in the door for aseries of test shots. He likes them – butis keen that the Ryan shot will possessone or two more eye-catching features.

“Giggs always looks so intense andfocused when he’s photographed inaction,” says Terry. “I’d like somethingcompletely different – a man relaxingand happy to be relaxed. A big beamingsmile would be great.”

The relaxation theme is to be

accentuated by Ryan’s dress for theshoot. He has agreed to wear atraditional black dinner suit and crispwhite shirt.

It’s in this impeccably fitted outfit, inpunishing bright sunshine, that heglides across the car park from the firstteam training facility. He’s lean and, with a perfect dark complexion, refreshingly handsome.

His close cropped, dark brown hair isshowing glints of silver at the temple.

He’s relaxed and wholly attentive asTerry explains what he plans to do.

First up is an icebreaker photo, adefault image that will be used in thehall of fame if the shot outside dressingroom 11 fails to work out.

In dressing room two, Terry has set up aclothes rail carrying four ManchesterUnited jerseys, turned with their backsto the camera. Each says, "Giggs 11."

At the opposite end of the rail are fourWales shirts, in similar formation and insimlar vibrant red.

Dame Shirley’s eyes light up as she

sees that Terry has arranged for the

diamonds to be part of the shoot.

“My goodness,” she laughs.

“You shouldn’t have got real ones.

My big toe will come out and scoop one

up – I’ve trained my big toe well!”

Ioan Gruffudd The thought process

OAN Gruffudd’s parents are enjoyinga short break at his new Los Angeleshome. He’s intent on showing them

a good time, and one highlight has beena brief but educational tour ofCalifornia’s vineyards.

Today, he must also fit in a couple ofscheduled business meetings. Oh, andit’s the birthday of his fiancé, theactress Alice Evans.

Nevertheless, one of Hollywood’s mostpromising new talents turns up at Mel’sDrive-in, on Sunset Boulevard, on thedot at 10am. He looks tall, slim andhealthy.

He’s never met photographer TerryMorris or lighting man Graham Harriesbut happily provides warm handshakes. His greetings are in Welsh and English.Dressed in pale red T-shirt, blue jeansand white tennis pumps, he slidescomfortably into one of the diner’smany pews. He orders a cappuccino.

Early banter revolves around life in theStates. He tells Terry where to find LA’sbest Guinness, and talks of informalfootball sessions in the city with pals.

I

Terry thought the robust, leatherette pews and solidly built tables at Mel’s Drive-in were everything he could want of anAmerican diner.

125Terry explained to Ioan Gruffudd that he wanted a picture that instantly told the viewer it was taken in America. The actor liked the idea and sat for 20 minutes, posing with his largecoffee mug.
