New top motor relay. This relay controls the electric top lift motor, if your motor does not work it may just be the relay. The original relay is known to melt one of the terminals causing the motor to fail, this new relay eliminates the problem and is cheap insurance to make sure your expensive motor does not fail. Reproduction of the folding top service manual. This manual was originally printed in 1971 and is required reading if you plan on working on your convertible top, scissor top cars are known to be troublesome but this manual may save you considerable money on psychiatric bills. SCZMANUAL $15.00

Convertible frame side rails. Convertible Specialists disassembles each side rail then bead blasts the parts to remove any rust or paint, we then inspect the parts for straightness and

install the individual components in a specially designed jig. The center pivot is replaced with a hardened pin and the side rails are reassembled, after assembly they are painted with an epoxy paint. All side rails are tested to make sure they work properly before they are ready to ship. Rebuilt side gear actuator assemblies. The actuators are the gear boxes on each side of the car where the drive cables attach, the gears inside the unit are notorious for wearing out. If your top stops half way or you need to ‘help’ the top go up or down your actuators may be worn out. We disassemble the actuators and the parts are cleaned, bead blasted and inspected for worn or damaged parts, defective parts are replaced and the unit is lubricated and reassembled. Each unit is then tested and painted with an epoxy paint. A refundable $100.00 core charge is required, when you return your old actuator we will refund your core charge. Sold each.

New #2 bow ball joint pivot brackets. The pivot brackets are attached to the ends of the #2 bow and are essential for your top to operate properly. If your pivot brackets are missing or falling apart it can damage your convertible top and frame. Sold as a pair.

If your car has a glass rear window you must have the window control brackets as well as the ‘S’ shaped arms and springs installed to control the window or it will break when the top is opened. The window control brackets rivet to the bottom of the rear window on each side.

The rear tack rail is the last bow and is what the top, rear window and well are stapled to. New quarter window roller kit, each. On the bottom of your rear quarter windows there is a plastic V-shaped roller that rides on a track, they are known to break in half or fall off the stud. If your rear quarter windows are loose or keep falling down then this part will make your car like new again. This complete set comes with the

roller, stud, metal washer, metal threaded washer and plastic washers.

New stainless steel gutter retaining rod. In the back of your car there is a vinyl drain apron that collects the water and channels it out the rear quarter panels, the drain apron is held in place by a gutter retaining rod. This rod threads through the drain apron and holds it in place so the water goes where it is supposed to and not into your trunk or on the floors. This rod is usually rusted away so we make new ones out of stainless steel so you never have to worry about it again.

Well liner. The well liner is the vinyl ‘pouch’ that the convertible top goes into when you put the top down, replace your torn or ripped well to help keep your top clean when you have it down.

Actuator bolt, each. The side actuator gear assemblies have a special shouldered bolt that attaches to the link on the side rail, if you do not have the proper bolt it can damage the actuator or side rails. Sold each and comes with locking tab.

SCZPIVOT. This special bolt, flanged washers and locking nut is a replacement for the main pivot on all 1971-1976 full size GM convertible cars. This pivot is what the entire convertible top frame pivots on, if they are worn your top may not fold properly or may be crooked when you raise or lower the top.

SCZQWRRI. This is a replacement quarter window regulator roller and rivet/pivot stud for all 1971-1976 full size GM convertible and hardtop cars. This roller fits on the end of the quarter window regulator arm, the roller on the end fits into a track on the window and makes the window go up and down. All vinyl tops are 32-36 OZ material with a cotton lining and come with a 72 month warranty against delaminating and shrinkage. Also available is Hartz Stayfast canvas (a cloth like material) that is a 3-ply, acrylic face fabric with a 100% cotton lining and comes with a 24 month warranty. Side Tension Cables


The side tension cables are an important part of your convertible top, they help keep the convertible top from pulling up over the side windows as well as keep the top from flapping in the wind. On most cars there are 2 cables running from the front to the rear, there will be one cable on each side of the car under the convertible top material. The cables are usually attached with screws or clips on each end, some cars have a spring on one end to help keep them tight. If your top seems loose or maybe you are considering replacing the top, make sure you check your side tension cables, it is cheap insurance!

Convertible Top Specialists manufactures rear tacking rails (also known as trim sticks) for most cars from the mid 1950’s and newer. The rear tacking rail on most cars is a 3 piece unit that the back edge of the convertible top staples to and then it is bolted to the car, they tend to rust out or the tacking material deteriorates and will no longer hold staples. We start with a galvanized metal channel and press in a plastic tacking material that holds staples far better than the original material. Our rails are bent using special dies that duplicate every curve, twist and step found in the original tacking rails, we then drill the holes (in some cases slots are milled) for mounting. All of our rear tacking rails are checked in a jig prior to shipping to ensure a proper fit, we build quality into every part we make.

A note on reveal molding-Many cars came from the factory with different levels of trim, some of the cars have the chrome trim on the outside window sweep attached to the window sweep. Some cars had what is called reveal molding attached to the door, when you remove the outer window sweep the chrome stays on the door, make sure you know which style your car has before ordering.

Tips, Tricks and Terminology


Left- When asking about parts always pretend you are sitting in the car like you are driving, the left side would be the drivers side.

Right- When asking about parts always pretend you are sitting in the car like you are driving, the right side would be the passengers side.

Beltline- When people refer to the beltline of a car they usually mean the top of the door where the glass comes out. The beltline molding (also called sweeps, felts, fuzzies or dew wipes) goes horizontally on the door on the outside and inside of the door glass.

Window sweeps- The window sweeps have many different names like felts, fuzzies, dew wipes, anti-rattlers, beltline moldings as well as others. The window sweeps attach to the top of the door on the outside and the top of the door panel on the inside and ‘wipe or sweep’ the glass when it is rolled up or down. They are there to keep the glass from rattling around and to help keep water and debris from making it down inside the doors.

Hardtop- A hardtop car does not have vertical pillars between the front and back windows, if you roll all the windows down on one side of the car it would be open from the front to the back. Hardtops do not have a frame around the door glass, the door seals go around the doors only up to the beltline. Hardtop cars have a ‘roof rail’ seal that goes on the windshield frame back over the top of the side windows.

Sedan- A sedan will have vertical pillar between the front and rear windows as well as a metal framework around the windows. The door seal goes all the way around the door up to the roof line, sedans do not have roof rail seals

Header bow- The header bow is the forward most bow that sits on the top of the windshield frame, in most cases this is where the latches are located.

#2 Bow- The number 2 bow would be the next bow back from the header bow, usually located above your head when sitting in the front seat.

#3 Bow- This is getting easier, this would be the third bow back from the header bow, most cars will have 3-4 bows before the top of the rear window.

Rear tacking rail- Sometimes referred to as the ‘trimstick’ the rear tacking rail on most cars is a 3 piece set of metal channels with tacking material inside. It will bolt to the body behind the rear seat with a series of bolts, the top, rear window and well staples to the backside where the tacking material is and then the tacking rail is bolted to the body. On many cars the rear tacking

rail is rusted away or the tacking material is falling out, it’s OK though as we make new ones!

Rear floating bow- On some cars (like the 1971-76 full size GM, 1969-72 GM ‘A’ body cars and 1969-70 full size GM cars) the rear tacking rail does not bolt to the body, it is what they call a floating bow. The bow is attached at the end to the side rails or mounting brackets and is allowed to move, the top, rear window and well is stapled to this bow. On many cars the rear floating bow is rusted away or the tacking material is falling out, did I mention that we make new ones!

Side rail- The side rail of a convertible top frame would be one complete side of the folding top mechanism from the back to the front header bow.

Side tension cables- On most cars there is a cable on each side of the top frame that is attached at the front by the windshield and goes over the top of the side windows and is attached to the top frame in the rear. The side tension cables sometimes have a spring attached to keep tension when the top is in the closed position, the cables help to keep the top from flapping in the wind and shrinking up over the side windows. When you replace the convertible top you should always replace the side tension cables if they show any wear or rust.

Roof rail seals- The roof rail seals are the seals that follow the roofline on the sides of the car, they are the seals that the side windows would seal against at the top. On a convertible the roof rail seals are attached to the folding top frame, on a hardtop they run from the front edge of the door glass to the rear. A complete roof rail set for a convertible would also include the header seal that seals the front of the convertible top frame to the top of the windshield.

Door seals- Sounds easy enough but on a hardtop car (no frame work around the door glass) the door seals only seal around the bottom of the doors up to the belt line, a sedan will have the seal go all the way around the door up to the roof line and makes a complete circle around the door.

Pillar post seals- The pillar post seals (also called A-pillar seals) are used on convertible cars, it is the seal that is attached to the windshield frame (also called the A-pillar) and seals against the front edge of the door glass.

Quarter window seals- The quarter windows on a 2-door car are the windows behind the door glass, on a convertible or hardtop car they will have a rubber seal on the front edge (called a quarter window seal) that seals the door glass to the quarter windows when the doors are shut. There may be a piece of chrome trim on the front edge of the quarter windows that the seal will slide into.

Tips, Tricks and Terminology


U jam seals- The U-jam seals (also called lock pillar seals) are in the area where the latch is located in the door jambs, they will usually have an opening where the rear quarter windows come out. They are there to keep the dirt, debris and water from getting inside the car or door jambs.

Header seal- The header seal on most cars is located under the header bow and seals it to the top of the windshield frame when the top is closed, some cars have the header seal attached to the windshield frame. This seal is the one that leaks the most when it rains, then it drips water on your girlfriend and she gets mad and makes you take a towel along when you go for a ride.

Vent window seal- The vent window is at the front of the doors on some cars, it is usually triangle shaped and has a V-shaped rubber seal on the bottom and front edge. The vertical seal is called the division post seal and is usually a separate part from the vent window seal.

Convertible top latches- The latches (sometimes called clamps or hooks) clamp the convertible top frame to the windshield frame, in most cases there is a threaded J-hook where it hooks to the windshield frame and can be adjusted to clamp the top frame tighter to the windshield frame.

Convertible top lift cylinders- The top cylinders (also called rams, pumps or lifts) are located in the back of the car on each side, they use hydraulic pressure to raise and lower the top. There is hydraulic pump in the back of the car that pressurizes hydraulic fluid (usually automatic transmission fluid but some older cars used brake fluid), the fluid flows through a pair of hoses to the top cylinders. To make the top go up the fluid is pumped into the bottom of the cylinder and the fluid is forced out the top of the cylinders and it returns to the pump fluid reservoir. To make the top go down the procedure is reversed

Convertible top pump- The top pump consists of an electric motor, hydraulic pump and a fluid reservoir all in one self contained unit, the electric motor turns a hydraulic pump that takes fluid from the reservoir and pressurizes it to 350-450 PSI. The fluid travels out one side of the pump through a hose to each side of the car, the hose will then attach to either both of the lower fittings or upper fittings on each cylinder. The fluid used in most cars will be automatic transmission fluid (ATF), some older cars used brake fluid which is about the worse thing you can use in the system, if you are doing a complete system replacement you should always use ATF. The reservoir on the pump is the end opposite of the electrical wires, there will be a rubber plug or slotted screw plug in the end that is used for filling the reservoir, a turkey baster works good to fill the reservoir. Warning-Do not let your wife catch you taking her turkey baster to the garage, make sure you at least wipe it off before you put it back in the drawer or just keep it in the garage and blame the kids.

Convertible top hoses- The hose set consists of 2 hoses made of plastic or black rubber, there will be a T-fitting in the middle where it attaches to the pump and then the ends will go to the bottom of each cylinder. The other hose will attach to the other side of the pump and go to the top of each cylinder, some pumps can put out over 500 pounds of pressure so use caution when working on the system.

Bow sleeve retainer- On some convertible cars there will be a metal channel or strip attached to the inside of the cross bows, this piece is called a bow sleeve retainer. The convertible top will have a flap of material hanging down, this flap is held to the bow by the bow sleeve retainer. The purpose is to keep the convertible top material from billowing up as you are driving down the road.

Pinch weld molding- Most convertible cars have trim that goes around the rear of the convertible top, in some cases the boot will snap onto this piece. It is called the pinch weld molding because the metal body panels are joined together here by ‘pinching’ them together and spot welding them when the vehicle is being assembled. Most cars use 2 or 3 pieces of stainless or chrome trim to cover the welded area, the boot will then attach (by snaps, clips or plastic tabs) to the trim to cover the top assembly when it is down.

Tack strip- The tacking strip is the material attached to the header bow and other bows that the convertible top would staple to. The material used on most older cars was some type of compressed fiber that usually falls apart or is missing altogether. But don’t worry, we have new plastic tacking material that will never rot away and holds staples better than the original, it comes in several different sizes and is sold by the foot.

Top boot- The top boot on most cars is a vinyl cover that clips or snaps onto the rear pinch weld molding, the boot covers the convertible top frame when the top is down. On some cars the boot will Velcro to the back of the rear seat or it may slide into a channel to attach to the back seat. At the rear the boot may have clips that snap onto the molding, snaps or a plastic slider that goes under the chrome to hold the boot in place.

Top well- The top well on most cars is a vinyl sack or bag that is behind the rear seat, the convertible top mechanism lowers into it when the top is down. The purpose the well liner is to keep the top clean, catch any debris and on some cars to catch the water and channel it out through the rear quarter panels.

Convertible top pads- The top pads on most cars is a strip of vinyl or nylon webbing that goes from the header bow to the back on each side of the convertible top frame between the frame and top material. The purpose of the pads is to keep the folding top mechanism from wearing through the top material, if you are installing a new top always replace the pads to make sure the job is done right.

In stock items — Most parts are in stock and will ship within one business day, if an item is out of stock you will be notified of an expected ship date. Back ordered items will ship the same day they arrive, you can request a refund of a back ordered part.

Special orders — Some items (carpet, convertible tops, boots) are special order parts and may take longer to be delivered, we can give an estimated ship date when the part is ordered. Special order items must be prepaid and are not returnable.

Payment — We accept Visa, MasterCard or Discover for payment. COD orders are accepted but must be paid by money order, UPS charges an additional $9.00 for all COD orders.
