Fossil Fuels

What is a Fossil Fuel?

Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression and partial decomposition of organic matter

Are fossil fuels renewable or nonrenewable?

Fossil fuels are nonrenewable

Formation occurs over thousands or millions of years

Page 3: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Coal

What is coal?

Coal - Concentrated carbon from compressed organic material

Four different types of coal that are classified according to how it was formed

Fossil Fuels - Petroleum

What is petroleum?

Petroleum - natural crude oil found underground and on Earth’s surface

Crude Oil - a mixture of compounds of hydrogen and carbon

What is crude oil used for?

Can be burned to release energy

Refined into gasoline or kerosene

Fossil Fuels - Natural Gas

How is natural gas formed?

Natural Gas -Gases produced from bacteria that is trapped in areas that don’t require a lot of oxygen

The bacteria release methane, a component of natural gas

Page 8: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Alternative Energy

What is renewable energy?

Renewable Energy - energy that can be replaced

What are some examples of renewable energy?

Page 9: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Solar Energy

What is solar energy?

Solar Energy - Using the sun’s energy to provide energy

What are some every day things that use solar energy?

Calculators

Homes

Solar Cookers

Hydroelectric

What does the prefix “hydro-” mean?

Water

What does the suffix “-electric” mean?

Power

Hydroelectric Power - power provided by water

Renewable

Nonpolluting

Page 11: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Hydroelectric

Niagara Falls

Waterfall produces electricity for both the U.S. and Canada

Water from the falls is diverted into massive turbines

The turbines turn, producing mechanical energy

The mechanical energy produces electrical energy

Page 12: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Hydroelectric

Where else can we harvest hydroelectric power?

Oceans

Rivers

What is one problem with hydroelectric power?

Barriers (power plants) in the water can change the water level

These can also disrupt coastal and marine ecosystems

Geothermal Energy

What is geothermal energy?

Geothermal Energy - Energy produced by naturally occurring steam and hot water

Includes hot springs such as Yellowstone National Park

What can this energy be used for?

Heat, electricity, recreation

The U.S. Dept of Energy estimates that if the geothermal reservoirs in the US were developed, they could provide up to 30 times as much energy as the country uses

Page 14: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Geothermal Energy

What are some advantages?

There’s lots of it

It’s reliable and continuous

Pollutant-free

Are there disadvantages?

Need to monitor carefully to make sure reservoirs don’t get tapped out too fast (water must be able to be replaced and warmed up to be used again)

Water usually contains a large amount of minerals

Transportation of geothermal energy is not practical

Page 15: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Wind Energy

What is wind energy?

Wind Energy - The capture of wind power for human use

Have been using for over 2000 years

Recently, we use wind farms, which replace the windmills that used to pump water from underground wells

Wind turbines convert wind to mechanical energy, which then produces electrical energy

Page 16: Conventional Energy Fossil Fuels. What is a Fossil Fuel? Fossil Fuels - energy sources that are formed over geologic time as a result of the compression.

Wind Energy

Advantages?

Unlimited energy resource (especially at higher altitudes)

Wind farms can be built quickly and expanded as needed

Nonpolluting

Disadvantages?

Must have steady winds (if not, need a back-up system)

Not attractive

Interfere with birds

Noisy

Presentation Expecatations

Dress - Look nice!

If you don’t own something nice, borrow something!

Practice!

Speak with authority!

Know what you are talking about!

If you don’t know, it’s okay to say “I don’t know.”

Make sure you leave time for questions

As the audience, don’t be afraid to ASK questions. You’ll need to know more for your scrapbook!
