Twentieth Annual Retirees Golf Tournament
The time has arrived to again put your teams to-gether for the Annual Retirees Golf Tournament – our Twenti-eth. Never dreamed that we could keep the string going this long. As always, it will be held at Dwan Golf Course in Bloom-ington. The date is August 19. If you don’t have a full team, sign up as three-some, twosome or single and we will find a great group for you to play with. The format will be the same as the past nineteen years – why mess with success. There will be Mixed and Gent flights - in a scramble format. There will be team and individual prizes. You don’t have to be a great golfer to enjoy this one.
A flyer with the entry form is enclosed with this newsletter.
SUMMER PICNIC
At the request of some of our members, we moved the picnic closer to the cities. The new location is 17 miles from Ceridian (the St. Croix location is 27 miles from Ceridian). Your cost remains the same. This new location has a public swimming pool adjacent to our pavilion. The cost is $7 per person (children under 12 months free). The pool is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (may close early due to inclement weather or low attendance).
Twins/Detroit Game
This event will NOT be offered to you as had been an-nounced. The two Twins games we scheduled resulted in over half of the tickets not sold. Therefore, the plans changed. The Twins performance to date and future perfor-
mance predictions made it hard to even give tickets away.
FALL LUNCHEON
This event will be announced in the August newsletter. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 5 at Mystic Lake. Great food and entertainment, as always. Songs of Patsy
Cline will entertain us.

MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA COFFEE CONCERT By Gerry Leinfelder
The Minnesota Orchestra opened their season finale with a sold out, 11 AM Coffee Concert on June 9th. Before the Concert we were all treated to free coffee and donuts and a Music Up Close/Concert Pre-view. The Orchestra' s Music Director and Principal Conductor Os-mo Vanska lead the Orchestra in the performance of Gustav Mah-ler's Symphony No. 5 and Alban Berg's Concerto for Violin and Or-chestra. The Berg Concerto featured internationally known guest violinist Christian Tetzlaff who is known for his musical integrity and compel-ling interpretations. His performance for us was true to his reputation and was met with a standing ovation and call back performance. The premiere of Mahler's Fifth Symphony in Cologne, Germany in 1904, surprised the audience that wasn't prepared for its stupendous power and dramatic scope. It has long since become one of Mahler's most popular symphonies, and one critic has gone so far as to call it "one of the seven wonders of the symphonic world". The Minnesota Orchestra continues to perform at the highest level and demonstrated again why critics rate it as one of the best Orches-tras in the Country. Osmo Vanska is a dynamic, highly skilled Music Director and Conductor who always brings out the very best from this talented Orchestra. We hope to schedule more Minnesota Orchestra Coffee Concerts next season, but be sure to request your tickets early as these Con-certs always seem to sell out quickly for the better seats.
FATHER’S DAY AT TARGET FIELD By Gary Polaczyk
A Twins victory this Father's Day at Target Field was a real treat for 25 Ceridian Retirees and guests. The day was filled with sun and excitement as the Twins beat those "Damn Yankees" by a score of 7 to 4. We witnessed Ervin Santana have his best pitching day of the season, and we cheered Brian Dozier and Max Kepler for their home runs. Alex Rodriguez struck out with two men on base to squelch a Yankee rally. He was so mad at himself that he slammed his bat and almost broke home plate. We had some unpurchased tickets which we passed along to a single mom with three young daughters, and a couple (who work 4 jobs between them) with two young daughters. It was a real fun, hot, day for good old-fashioned major league base-ball.

CRITICS CORNER
OWATONNA By Nancy Dostal
The bus left Bloomington at 8:45 with 39 retirees/guests on board. An hour later we arrived at the Minnesota State Public School Or-phanage Museum in Owatonna. After coffee and donut holes we watched a video about the school and a presentation by Harvey Ronglien, now 91, who spent 11 years at the school. The “State School” opened in 1886 and closed in 1945. During those years 10,635 orphaned, abused or abandoned children were sent to Owatonna from all over the state, from infants to the age of 16. Har-vey lived at the orphanage from the age of 4 until he was 16, and he felt the story of the State School should be told. The museum was founded in 1992, by Harvey and his wife, Maxine. In spite of their upbringing, a number of the children grew up to have very productive lives. After touring one of the cottages, we stopped for lunch, and then drove on to downtown Owatonna. We toured the beautifully ornate National Farmers Bank, now operated as a Wells Fargo bank, which was built in 1906, designed by Architect Louis H. Sullivan and is now on the National Historic Register.
BROADWAY Songbook: Kander & Ebb & All That Jazz
By Tom Moore
Composer John Kander and Lyricist Fred Ebb have had the longest partnership in the history of musical theater. 50 + years! Do you recognize the names? Neither did I until introduced to songs from their biggest hit shows, including Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spi-der Woman and Liza with a Z. Who knew? But on a sunny, sum-mery June day thirty-three Ceridian retirees trooped through Rice Park’s charming flower gardens, fountains and pigeons and into the beautiful Ordway for an entertaining education. Four talented musicians played multiple instruments while seven excellent performers, including James A. Rocco, enthusiastic writer, performer and host of this series, sang, danced and amused us. It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The popular Broadway Songbook series explores the history, meaning and impact of Broad-way on popular American culture. Each run is always very short, just one weekend. The next one will be September 23-25, called Rebels of Broadway, songs from Hamilton, The Book of Mormon,
Fun Home and more. A very nice program.

It sounds like the issue of ransomware is rearing its ugly head to a larger degree again so I thought I would cover the de-
tails surrounding it again as a reminder to everyone.
Let’s talk about ransomware.
What is ransomware?
It is computer malware. It is a computer program that encrypts files on your hard drive and on any drives you may be connected to at work. Ransomware generally encrypts certain types of files, such as photos, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations.
Once encrypted, you are unable to access your data. Even more frustrating, you don’t get much of a reason. Yesterday, you could open that photo of your child’s birthday party. Today, you can’t. If you are familiar enough to look in your file folders, you will see a friendly note from the bad guys telling you your files have been encrypted and to decrypt them, you need to send them money or “bitcoin”. Bitcoin is an electronic alternative to money and is nearly impossible to trace. Depending upon the ransomware, the cost could be anywhere from $300-$1,000. However, some businesses have had to pay much more. Once you send them the money (the ransom), they give you a decryption key with instructions on how to use it to recover your data.
The malware is generally targeted towards home users, parents and grandparents. More recent versions of malware are encrypting more types of files.
How does someone get it?
Phishing emails asking you to click on a link or download a program. And, once you start the process, there is no stopping it until it is done running. It happens fast.
How do I get rid of it?
Ahhhh. Now we come to the tricky part. You have three options. And, none of them are very good.
METHOD #1: Greatly preferred by security people everywhere! You have a recent backup of your files and you recover the files from your backup. For home users, does anyone see a little problem with this solution? Almost no home users do it. But, external USB drives are availa-ble for little cost and it doesn’t take long to actually do it. This is the cleanest. In short, you just erase what you had and recover the data.
METHOD #2: This method is not preferred. However, if your data is really important and you can’t live without it and you don’t have a backup, it is your only option. You pay the ransom to the bad guys and they give you the key. There are two problems with this method.
You are dealing with criminals. There are plenty of reports of people hit with ransomware being targeted by the same criminals. They know you are vulnerable. So, they keep coming at you. You keep paying. It’s a vicious cycle.
They may give you a key that doesn’t work or that only works partially. Remember, this isn’t nice, neat, clean software you buy from a reputable company. This is nasty malware thrown together. There are reports that some keys don’t work and the data can’t be recov-ered.
METHOD #3: Give up. Reformat your drive or buy a new computer and start from scratch. You don’t have many good options.
So, what does this mean for you?
You matter a great deal to the security of your own data at home. Teach your kids safe computing. Teach your parents safe computing. Just because you get an email with an attachment doesn’t mean you need to click on it. Be a bit suspicious.
