Reading Pathfinders A Lexile is a unit for measuring text difficulty and reader comprehension. MetaMetrics, developer of The Lexile Framework® for Reading, was the first organization to take readability of text and comprehension of students and put the two together. By expressing these two functions on the same scale, teachers and parents are better able to target and personalize reading selections. Lexile scores are linked to Reading Rasch unIT (RIT) scores. Lexile is reported on an equal-interval scale, similar to the RIT scale. 10L is at the low end of the scale and 1700L is at the high end. Books for beginning readers are listed as BR on the scale. The Lexile range is included on several NWEA reports. It allows educators and parents to find appropriately challenging books, periodicals, and other reading material for students. Teachers may print the appropriate Reading Pathfinder for each student. The pathfinders are also useful for parent conferences and for making reading recommendations. Reading Pathfinders

A Lexile is a unit for measuring text difficulty and reader comprehension.

The Reading Pathfinder list printed below is a collection of literature titles customized to match the reading achievement of your student. According to your student’s score on the NWEA Reading Achievement Level Test or Measure of Academic Progress, he or she should be able to read any of these titles at an appropriate level of challenge. All of the books on the list are generally available at local schools, public libraries, and bookstores. The Reading Pathfinder list provides a general guide to the age appropriateness of specific titles by noting whether the materials are intended for students in the elementary (E) grades K-5, middle (M) grades 6-8, or high (H) school grades 9-12.

Research shows that reading for as little as 20 minutes a day can help children become better readers and better students. By reading regularly, skills developed during the school year can be maintained or even improved. A Lexile measure refers to text readability only—therefore parents/educators are encouraged to preview books that a child reads to make sure they are at the appropriate development level for the child and also meet community standards. Please encourage your child to read more this school year.

A Lexile is a unit for measuring text difficulty and reader comprehension. MetaMetrics, developer of The Lexile Framework® for Reading, was the first organization to take readability of text and comprehension of students and put the two together. By expressing these two functions on the same scale, teachers and parents are better able to target and personalize reading selections.
