To Connecticut Veterans of World War I I :

Connecticut men have w r i t t e n b r i l l i a n t pages i n the m i l i t a r y h i s t o r y of t h i s nation since the days of Bunker H i l l . Indeed, i n days of peace Connecticut men prepared f o r war so w e l l that they always have been among the f i r s t to f i g h t .

as a son of Connecticut, have courageously and f a i t h f u l l y maintained that t r a d i t i o n . In f a c t , you have r a i s e d i t to new heights. You have added immortal names to the h i s t o r i c l i s t of v i c t o r i e s — New Georgia, T u n i s i a , Cassino, Anzio, Normandy, Ardennes Bulge, Hurtgen Forest, Leyte, Luzon, Ruhr Pocket, Apennines, Okinawa, and more.

the supply routes, i n h o s p i t a l s and at bases, or to t o i l and sweat i n such places as the Lido Road and along the Persian Gulf. A l l t h i s made v i c t o r y p o s s i b l e . Connecticut men, too, played a g l o r i o u s r o l e i n that part of the v i c t o r y which i s c r e d i t e d i n the ledgers of h i s t o r y f o r the A i r Force.

Your f e l l o w c i t i z e n s i n Connecticut are h i g h l y proud o f your s e r v i c e . And they are very, very g r a t e f u l .

In t h i s , the greatest of a l l wars j u s t ended, you,

Chance and t a l e n t s assigned many of you to tasks along

Yours very sincerely,

Governor

HERE ARE THEIR STORIES W a r correspondents of Wor ld War II frequently embellished and often overwrote the action stories of

modest soldiers. The aggregate result pleased editors, made headlines, and, on occasion, embarrassed the soldiers. In retaliation, the correspondents and their victims were labelled, i n characteristic G . I . language, "Joe B l o w " . Actual ly , the "Joe B l o w s " were few and far between in this A r m y . The purpose of these stories is to record without embellishment, the mood, the impressions, the exciting events, of the worst and best of the great days, before time blurs memories with resulting confusion as to events, dates and places. These are soldiers' stories, here recorded as near verbatim as possible i n soldiers' words. — The Editor.

Campbell, Clarence, J r . , T / 5 , B t r y . A . , 459th A . A . A . B n . , 29th D i v . , R F D 2, Rockv i l l e .

" P u r p l e H e a r t H i l l near the R u h r industr ia l area was just that for me. W e were setting up our guns i n a field to give protection to the 29th D i v i s i o n when the Germans opened fire on us. I h i t the dirt face down, and a shell came s k i m m i n g along and took off the seat of m y pants. Y o u can imagine where I got h i t . It 's a l u c k y th ing that we don't have to wear the decoration on the place we got hi t . I was i n Germany for 11 months, going a l l the way from Aachen to M a g d e b u r g . "

Cofrancesco, V incent C . , P f c , 102d Inf., 43d D i v . , Waterbury .

" I n January of 1942, I sailed for the Pacific w i t h the N e w E n g l a n d divis ion. W e were i n a convoy and got a real scare i n the Caribbean when we were attacked by a sub. Sweating that out was the hardest th ing that I ever d id . I n the Pacif ic , we bui l t a nava l refueling base at the Society Islands. I came home on rotat ion i n J u l y of 1944, and was I glad to see Waterbury ! Af ter m y furlough, I batted around the States for a while, a n d then left for the E T O to jo in the 106th D i v i s i o n . I was near M a i n z , Germany , on V - E D a y . The E T O was a far better deal than the Pac i f i c . "

Donahue, Franc is D . , M / S g t . , 1177th E n g r . C m b t . G r p . , (Sep.), M y s t i c .

" I figure in an odd coincidence. I was discharged from the A r m y i n W o r l d W a r I just 26 years ago to the day from m y

discharge after this one. I t was October 23, 1919, that I left the service, and i t ' s the same month and day this year. W e had a much different A r m y in this war ; the men seemed about the same, but the officer mater ial wasn't anywhere near as good this t ime as i t was then. Between wars I was active i n the Amer i can Legion at Gro ton Po int . I couldn't resist j o in ing up again and they sent me out to the Pacif ic , though I ' d been i n the 3d C a v a l r y i n the last war. I was w i t h a water supply un i t and we had a terrific problem at M a n i l a . I t ' l l take years to bu i ld that c i ty up aga in . "

Donnelly, George J . , S /Sgt . ,491st Q . M . C o . (Sep.), D a n b u r y .

" I t can't get too cold for me i n the N e w E n g l a n d states, after 40 months of heat i n the Pacific . I moved a l l the way up from N e w Zealand to the Phi l ippines i n that t ime, and I had enough of the Pacific to last me a l i fetime. I ' m afraid to t r y to th ink how many supplies I handled while overseas."

Emery, Lawrence V . , T / 5 , 196th Sig. Photo Co . , A r m y P i c tor ia l Service, West H a v e n .

" I saw lots of sights as a combat photographer for the A r m y , work ing in Afr i ca and I ta ly . I th ink I had some good shots, but it 's really too hard to tel l which was the best one, though I d id l ike one I took in I ta ly on a bul let -marked execution wal l w i t h some symbolic shadows on i t . T h a t Anz io beachhead was the spot for excitement ; I felt l ike a duck i n a shooting gal lery . "

Faust, D a n i e l C , S /Sgt . , 75th Jo int Assault Sig . Co . , Stratford.

" T h e native tombs on O k i n a w a were something to see. T h e y were very elaborate affairs, often bui l t into the side of a h i l l , w i t h only a smal l opening. I t wasn't so good when the Japs started using them i n defending the is land because i t was mighty hard to knock them out of there. I t was a dangerous, d i r t y job to blast them out or seal them i n and i t cost us a lot of casualties."

Gladstone, Lewis , 1st/Sgt., 303d M e d . B n . , 78th Inf. D i v . , H a m d e n .

" T h e Texans remember the A l a m o , but I w i l l always remember Remagen. T h a t was about the hottest spot that I was ever i n . W e crossed the r iver there under fire and , for a whole week on the other side, we were compressed into a smal l area into which the Germans poured a l l they had. N o t only d i d we get i t f rom the art i l lery but also f rom the air . T h e y were t r y i n g to knock both us and the bridge out. T h e y d i d finally get the bridge, but not u n t i l after the pontoons were bui l t . A f ter our men cleared them out, we went across the Sieg R i v e r and up to the R u h r pocket. I was i n the combat medics, and, for m y money, i t was a great out f i t . "

Greene, Franc is G . , C p l . , D i v . A r t y . , 83d D i v . , Sal isbury.

" L a y i n g wire to battalions and attached units was no easy job, especially i n forward areas. T h e cold weather of the winter campaigns d idn ' t help us either. The Germans were always t r y i n g to knock out our communications and we had to work under heavy fire many a t ime. A s a wire corporal I la id wire a l l across Europe , from N o r mandy right into the heart of Cent ra l E u r o p e . "

Guisto, A n t h o n y , S /Sgt . , 1303d E n g r . (Sep.), W a t e r b u r y .

" M y outfit was one of those redeployed

to the Pacific r ight after the G e r m a n surrender. I ' d had five campaigns i n Europe dur ing 15 months, and was ready for more on the other side of the wor ld . W e went through the P a n a m a C a n a l and across the Pacif ic to the Phi l ippines . I t was great news for us when the J a p surrender was announced and we knew we 'd be start ing soon for the States . "

Horowitz, Samuel , T / 4 , 95th E v a c . Hosp. , (Sep.), West H a v e n .

" W i t h the 5th A r m y i n I ta ly and the 7th A r m y in France and Germany, the closest call I ever had came on Feb . 7, 1944, at A n z i o when our hospital was bombed and I was hit by a frag. W e made D - D a y at I ta ly , Salerno, A n z i o and Southern France . The toughest i n i t i a l landing was at Salerno, but the hardest campaign was at Anz io . T h e most v i v i d experience that I h a d — a n d one that I would l ike to forget, but can ' t—is helping a doctor make an autopsy at a morgue. H e la id open the skul l of a m a n and removed the bra in piece by piece. I t was pretty awful to have to stay there and watch that . I know that even the doctor hated i t . I hope to forget it soon."

Hunt, R i c h a r d S., P f c , 384th Por t B n . (Sep.), R o c k y H i l l .

" M y most exciting moment was at Gela , S ic i ly , when I was i n the hold of a ship we were unloading. N a z i planes came over and one of them made a direct hit on the ship. L u c k i l y for me we were at the aft end of the ship and the bomb hit forward or I wouldn ' t be here to tel l about i t . Another t ime the Germans opened up on us w i t h 88s from the shore and gave us a bad time for a wh i l e . "

Izzo, Charles A . , P f c , M e d . B n . , E v a c . Hosp . , 1st A r m y , Bridgeport .

" I got a shamrock from m y Ir ish friends i n Bridgeport the day I got i n ducted. T h a t was on St . Pat r i ck ' s D a y ,

1941. I was i n the E T O for 20 months, going from N o r m a n d y right through. I w i l l never forget Avaranches. W h e n we got to the town, there were only three buildings standing. I saw the C a n a d i a n paratroopers l and near this sector. T h e y were trapped 5 days later. B y V - E D a y , I was i n Gena , Germany . After four and a half years i n the A r m y , I a m going to take i t real easy for a while. I figure on tak ing a vacat ion u n t i l the first of the year. H o w about the bonus?"

Kania, A n t h o n y J . , T / 4 , 336th E n g r . , (Sep.), Moosup .

" T h a t Omaha Beach i n N o r m a n d y on D - D a y was some place. There was so m u c h stuff flying around i n the air that I th ink i t ' s almost a miracle that I got through that day a l l r ight, not to mention the things that came after. A t Omaha i t was really rugged, as tough as anyth ing I ran into dur ing four campaigns through E u r o p e . "

Kantrowitz, A b r a h a m , P f c , M e d . Det . , 152d Inf., 38th D i v . , Bridgeport .

" W e gave the wounded care and treatment right out i n the front lines, even sometimes g iv ing them plasma while under fire. I helped save lives and that was our job. I was l u c k y enough not to get even a scratch. I n the Phi l ippines I got a Si lver Star and a Bronze Star for helping wounded men under fire and getting them back to safer areas."

Kennedy, P a u l B . , T / 3 , 471st M e d . Det . , (Sep.), N e w H a v e n .

" M a n i l a went w i ld when the Japs decided to surrender. I was at C l a r k F i e l d , wait ing to come home, and I saw the whole show. Shells, flares, rockets and everything else filled the sky and i t went on for hours. T h e Fi l ip inos and Amer i can servicemen joined i n a great celebration— one that was out of this world . It was l ike a hundred F o u r t h of Ju lys rolled into one."

Lewoc, F a b i a n P . , B / S g t . , 75th J o i n t Assault Sig. C o . (Sep.), M e r i d e n .

" I went through the Pacif ic from the Aleutians to O k i n a w a . T h e Aleut ians are so hopeless that even trees refuse to grow there and i t was good to get away. D u r i n g the Leyte campaign I got a leg wound from a J a p bomb, but I was ready to go into Ok inawa w i t h m y Jasco outfit. W e worked w i t h the 7th D i v i s i o n , and for m y money Okinawa was the worst of them a l l . T h e Japs had wonderful defense positions and they just had to be dug and b lown out. I t was slow and bloody w o r k . "

Lombardo, V incent S., P f c , 196th F . A . G r p . , X I I I Corps , Waterbury .

" G e t t i n g married to a swell E n g l i s h gir l is the best th ing that I remember about the E T O . N o w if the government w i l l only br ing her over here i n a hurry , everyth ing w i l l be str ic t ly on the beam. Get t ing strafed at the Belg ian Bulge by about 25 P-47s was about the closest call that I had. I guess i t was a l l a mistake as the Ger mans were very close to us, and I suppose that the pilots couldn ' t te l l one side from the other. W e were really forced back that day. I ' m wai t ing for two t h in gs— m y discharge papers and m y wi fe . "

Newell, R i c h a r d C , S /Sgt . , H q . B t r y . , 15th Inf. Regt. , 3d D i v . , West H a r t f o r d .

" T h e road from Casablanca to Ber¬chtesgaden was the one that was traveled by the T h i r d . I n this month 's issue of R e d Book , there is a fu l l history of the " F i g h t ing T h i r d " . I was a forward observer, and , l ike a l l of the others, I just d id m y job. R e a d that story and you w i l l get a fu l l idea of what we d id . I a m going to go to school under the G . I . B i l l . "

Pesillo, Ernest J . , T / 5 , 15th F . Obs. B n . , I I Corps , Waterbury .

" I ' l l always remember the day on the Anz io beachhead when the Germans counterattacked and almost pushed us into

the sea. 1 dug in and got ready to fight as an in fantryman. It was the F l y i n g Fortresses that saved us by breaking up the G e r m a n drive. E v e r y t i m e I looked up there were waves of them and i t was the best sight I ever witnessed dur ing a l l the t ime I was overseas. F r o m Naples up u n t i l we passed Rome, i t seemed the Germans were always looking down our throats, and the way they handled those 88s i t wasn't even funny. Once we pushed past Rome, though, things changed for a while for the Germans d i d not even have t ime enough to set up a position on a h i l l . "

Ranciato, Lou is R . , S /Sgt . , 92d M e d . G . T . B n . , N e w H a v e n .

" T h e most v i v i d picture I have is of Amer i can doctors going about their business of tending the wounded while their makeshift hospital was being shelled. T h i s happened at Bastogne where we used a roofless barn for the hospital . I t was really something to see as the medics— al l of them—performed their required jobs even w i t h shells fal l ing into the barn. I ' l l never forget i t . T h e D a c h a u atrocity camp was l iberated on A p r i l 29, and I was there on M a y 2. W e were sent there to clean out the typhus and tubercular cases. W e gave 50,000 typhus shots there. I t was tough giv ing those people shots as most of them were only sk in and bones. W e inspected the whole place, seeing the crematorium, the gas chambers and the special operating room where the German doctors experimented. The l iberated prisoners included people of a l l nationalities and a l l professions. I have some pictures that show the crematorium and gas chamber working. I ' m glad that I wasn't a prisoner there."

Rapacky, J o h n D . , P v t . , 532d E . B . and Shore Regt. , 2d A m p h i . Brigade, P la inv i l l e .

" I made five D - D a y landings on islands

i n the Pacific and that was about enough. One of the most dangerous moments was at M i n d o r o when a J a p ship came i n close enough to shell us on the shore. T h a t was even worse than N e w Guinea , or so i t seemed. W h e n the Japs surrendered, I was due to start home anyway and was at Leyte wai t ing for transportat ion back to the States . "

Rice, F r a n k J . , Sgt., D i v . H q . Co . , 78th D i v . , West H a v e n .

"One question that has bothered me for a long t ime is, ' W h y can't the G e r m a n people be as nice as their countryside? ' There is a nice country. I believe that the most v i v i d memory I have is of the Remagen bridgehead. W e got across the bridge under heavy fire, landed on the other side, and made a head about three miles deep. T h e n the Germans counterattacked while they threw a l l k inds of planes, inc luding jet jobs, against the bridge i n an effort to destroy i t and cut us off. W e were right close to the bridge and bombs dropped a l l around us. I t was a t r y i n g t ime. W h e n we finally drove the Germans back, we continued up to the Sieg R i v e r and sealed a b ig a rmy off there. T h a t was the roughest campaign i n which we took p a r t . "

Riga, A d o l p h A . , T / 5 , 79th F . A . G r p . (Sep.), Bridgeport .

" I ' v e been bombed both b y the A m e r i cans and b y the Germans. Be ing bombed by our own was a mistake as the Germans were so close that i t would be impossible from the air to tel l one from the other. B u t the Germans bombed us on purpose. W e were i n a house at Sto l lburg when a German plane dropped one right i n on us. I came out of there on the fly and dove head first into a d i tch . I ' m going to be home tonight and dive right into m y c iv i l ian clothes."

Robbins, Joseph W . , Pfc . , B t r y . B . , 575th F . A . , O l d L y m e .

" C h o w time seemed to be m y time for close shaves. I had the first i n Florence, I ta ly , when the Germans la id a barrage on the mess line. W e had to hole up i n a hurry that t ime. I t was almost funny to see everybody r u n for cover and mess gear and food flying i n a l l directions. T h a t is, if a close miss could be called funny. The next one I had was i n France when a truck i n which we were r id ing to chow got strafed by a G e r m a n plane. W e had to pile out and get to cover i n a hurry . T h e A r m y is okay i n war t ime. It 's something that has to be done."

Sawicki, R i c h a r d S., T / S g t . , 67th M a l a r i a C o n t r o l D e t a i l , (Sep.), M e r i d e n .

" M a l a r i a conditions on Leyte were pretty bad when we landed there, but we began improvements once we got established. W e had the job of enforcing malar ia control regulations and doing everything possible to eliminate i t . Those atabrine pills helped many an Amer i can serviceman from fal l ing v i c t i m to m a l a r i a . "

Skoglund, Herbert , P f c , 46th F . A . G r p . (Sep.), Newington .

" A f r i c a , I ta ly , Corsica, E n g l a n d , France, Germany and A u s t r i a were the places I

was stationed one t ime or another dar ing 34 months overseas. I was a telephone l ineman lay ing communicat ion wires r ight back of the in fantry . T h e battle around Haguenau i n Alsace Lorraine was the toughest due, I guess, to the weather conditions as well as the actual fighting. It was b i t ter ly cold, and wet. N o w I t h i n k that I a m going to j o in the M e r c h a n t M a r i n e . I l ike to t r a v e l . ' "

Smith, E a r l C , P f c , 978th F . A . , X I X Corps, Southbury .

"Reconnaissance work at night is always t i ck l i sh business. Y o u never know what you are going to run into , or what is going to r u n into you . There were twelve of us out one night when a l l of a sudden a Thunderbol t swooped down and let his bombs go. W e hit for German foxholes i n a hurry . W e d idn ' t know what to make of i t , getting bombed by our plane. It was a funny feeling. Soon, the plane was back. I got way down i n m y foxhole, as I figured he was going to strafe. B u t I guess he must have recognized us for Americans just as he let the bombs go, for, this t ime, he just flapped his wings and roared off. It was a great relief after a tough scare."

Spotten, Robert J . , P f c , C o . D . , 3d M e d . B n . , 3d D i v . , D a y v i l l e .

" F o u r months of A n z i o gave me a l l of war that I w i l l ever want. A l l of that t ime, the firing and bombings went on night and day. I t seemed that we never got any rest nor any relief from the sound of war. A n d when I th ink back now how we seemed to have things under control after the beachhead, i t makes me wonder. I served as a l i t ter bearer i n combat zones for two and a half years. I n that length of t ime, we made six D - D a y s . W e traveled the hard way a l l of the way from Sic i ly to Berchtesgaden. I 've had enough."

Stevens, H a r o l d B . , P f c , 551st F . A . B n . , (Sep.), E a s t H a r t f o r d .

" T h e first day was rough and the last day was rough. T h e first day we were i n combat i n N o r m a n d y , enemy shells fell a l l around us. I was on a 240 m m crew. That ' s the biggest gun there is. T h e n , near Sto l lburg, i t wasn't enough for us to be plagued by art i l lery fire and snipers, but German paratroopers were dropped near us. There was never a du l l moment. T h e toughest th ing that I saw was when one of our guns blew up near the R u h r pocket. The last day of the war found us getting shelled just as badly as we d id the first day. There were no easy days . "

Tallcouch, Steven C , T / 4 , 15th E v a c . Hosp , (semi-mobile), Fair f ie ld .

" T h e first t ime I ever saw what actual ly happened at the front was i n N o r t h A f r i c a at famous H i l l 609. I was to ld an evacuat ion hospital never got nearer than forty miles to the front lines, but there we were only four miles away. General M c N a i r was wounded here and we treated h i m at our hospital . T h e n again at A n z i o , where we remained for 120 days, our hospital was under shellfire morning , noon and night . T h a t was our roughest deal as we were the only hospital on the beachhead that was never relieved or replaced. A n y way, I a m mighty proud to have belonged to that outfit. W e established a record when we set up the entire hospital i n six hours while operating near Peretta , I t a l y . "

Thomas, A n d r e w F . , P f c , C o . K . , 274th Inf. Regt. , Stamford.

" A f t e r Salerno, a l l of the others looked easy. I n the combat engineers things were pret ty rugged a l l of the way through. I n 28 months overseas I served both i n the M T O and E T O , and made D - D a y at Salerno and Southern France . Outside of Rome, I ta ly d idn ' t offer much . I saw the changing of the guard at V a t i c a n C i t y and was blessed by the Pope. V a t i c a n C i t y and St . Peter's are very impressive. Aus t r ia is about the nicest country that I was i n . "

Urless, Theodore J . , P f c , 978th F . A . , X I X Corps, Ansonia .

" T h e best day that I had i n the E T O was the day I got on the boat to come home. Three hundred and sixteen days i n combat was enough for me. I operated a quadrant on our gun. V i re , France , is one of the places that I remember too well . I t was here that I believe our crew had its closest cal l , though I guess that could be said for lots more of us. W e were about 500 yards i n back of the infantry , setting

Page 11: Connecticut Veterans Commemorative Booklet Vol 7 No 14 Connecticut Men of the United States Army Demobilization Fort Devens Massachusetts October 21 to 23 1945

up for posit ion, when the hottest rifle fire that we ever got started. I never saw such a place for snipers. W e had a tough t ime that day. T h e air bombing which we got at St . L o , which lasted for five whole days, was also something to remember . '

Wailonis, Joseph E . , P f c , 684th O r d . A m m o . Co . , (Sep.), Naugatuck .

" A f t e r four months on A n z i o , the rest of the war was pret ty tame to m y outfit. W e were always running short of the heavy stuff because we were under cont inua l shellfire from the Germans. W h e n they made a hit on the dump, a fire would start that would usual ly burn a l l day. F o r a while we ran so low that the gun batteries could shoot only one round a day. M y worst experience happened about two weeks after we had landed at Anz io . T h e Germans made an a ir - ra id and dropped an anti-personnel bomb i n the middle of a store of powder charges. A fire started and while I was helping to put i t out, a huge pile of 155s and 210s went up w i t h an explosion. It sounded l ike a l l hell had broken loose. I was l u c k y because except for a scare and getting knocked down, I was a l l r ight a short while after. However , a lot of the fellows had their eardrums busted and two others were k i l l ed . I n cidental ly , I tr ied to do that t r i ck of Commando K e l l e y ' s of pu l l ing out the p i n on a 60mm mortar and using i t as a hand grenade, but i t doesn't w o r k . "

Williams, D a v i d L . , P f c , 58th M a l a r i a C o n t r o l D e t a i l (Sep.), N e w H a v e n .

" D u r i n g the 20 months that I had to observe things i n the Pacif ic , I was able to see great progress i n malar ia control . I t ' s a fight that has to be kept up constant ly , but the to l l of the disease was being dr iven down steadily a l l the t ime. Amer i can medicine and science can do a lot to improve health and l i v i n g conditions out there ."

Zboray, George W . , T / 5 , 649th E n g r . Topo . B n . , Survey P latoon , Strat ford .

" I ' m going to enjoy the nice peaceful life of running a restaurant i n Bridgeport . I 've had enough of war. T h e closest cal l that I ever had was when a bui ld ing next to the one I was i n was hit by a shell and knocked for a loop. I was i n a field observat ion battal ion. W e computed areas into which the field art i l lery was to concentrate its fire. It was very exacting work, but i t was not monotonous. T h e enemy saw to that . I was i n A u s t r i a on V - E D a y . I t d idn ' t end any too soon for me . "

Zdeb, M i c h a e l J . , P f c , 3341st Gas. T r u c k Co . , 204th Q . M . B n . , R o c k y H i l l .

" I drove a gasoline truck for refueling tanks, trucks, and Diesels, over prac t i cal ly every road i n N o r t h A f r i ca and I ta ly . I t was a toss-up which roads were worse though H i g h w a y 65 between Florence and Bologna and the stretch that ran from Sousse to Cape B o n i n N o r t h A f r i ca were about as bad as any I have ever seen. W h a t they cal l roads over there, we would call plowed land here. D u r i n g the push from Rome onward, I worked day and night haul ing gas from the end of the pipeline to the front, but i t was worth i t for you real ly knew the A r m y was going places t h e n . " T h e most spectacular th ing that I saw was an aerial show one night at Duisburg , Germany . The night was so clear and bright that i t seemed almost dayl ight . T h e R A F was out i n fu l l force, and the K r a u t s were there to meet them. W e could easily see the flashes from the bombers' guns as the German fighters dove i n to intercept them. W e were kept busy firing at the German ackack positions, but we could also keep an eye on the fight above. E i g h t of the bombers were knocked down and one J U - 8 8 . W e saw the Germans parachute down and land not far from our posit ion. T h e y were a l l taken prisoner. I also saw some of the R A F men parachute down, but I don't know how they made out. I l iked G e r m a n y the best of a l l of the European countries."

They A r e Coming H o m e Connect icut men are coming home b y

the thousands from both the European and Pacific Theaters of W a r . T h e y come i n every size and type of vessel that floats, ranging from the l i t t le W a r Shipp ing A d m i n i s t r a t i o n freighters that carry fifteen to t h i r t y men, to V i c t o r y ships that provide passage for nearly 2,000, up to the great liners l ike the S.S. Amer i ca , renamed the U . S . S . West Po in t , and to the Queen ships of the C u n n a r d l ine, which carry nearly 15,000 men on each homeward t r ip .

T h e b ig boats, notably the Queens, arrive i n a blaze of pub l i c i ty and headlines, but i t is the W S A fleet that real ly piles up the tota l , and accounts for better than 85 per cent of i t .

T h a t fleet of 470 vessels, consisting of 20 passenger liners and 450 cargo type ships, converted to troop transports at a cost of $250,000,000, have a tota l carry ing capacity of a ha l f -mi l l i on men. T h e fleet

includes ships ranging i n troop carry ing capacity from 550 to 6,000 each.

I n addi t ion to the W S A fleet, some 250 combat type vessels, constructed b y the U . S . M a r i t i m e Commiss ion for the A r m y and N a v y , are being used, chiefly i n the Pacific . E v e n L S T s "do their b i t . "

Approx imate ly 15,000 Connect icut men according to estimates based on a l l over figures were returned from Europe between V - E D a y and V - J D a y .

Inc luding the 523 men, whose names are l isted i n this booklet, a tota l of 7,362 Connect icut men have been separated at Devens since September 1, 1945.

M o r e than 100,000 Connect icut men saw overseas service i n the armed forces, a n d the great bu lk of them, occupation troops and regular N a v y personnel excepted, w i l l be on A m e r i c a n soil b y M a y , 1946, according to official forecasts.
