Quick Reference Guide
To begin using your RX65, just follow these simple steps
1 Plug the small end of the power cord into the side jack of the detector, and plug the large end of the power cord into your car’s lighter socket.
2 Mount your RX65 on the windshieldusing the supplied windshield mount.
3 Press the PWR button, located top left, to turn RX65 on.
4 Press and hold the Volume/Mute button to adjust the volume.

Power ConnectionTo power RX65, plug the small end of theSmartPlug, (telephone-type connector) intothe modular jack on RX65’s right side, andplug the lighter plug adapter into yourvehicle’s lighter socket or accessory socket.
RX65 operates on 12 volts DC negativeground only. The lighter plug provided is astandard size and will work in most vehicles. However, some vehicles mayrequire the optional European sleeve toensure a snug fit. If so, simply call ourservice department to order one. Thissleeve slides over the SmartPlug’s lighterplug adapter. Of course, your lighter socketmust be clean and properly connected forproper operation.
Note: depending on your vehicle, thelighter socket power may either be continuously on, or it may be switched onand off with your ignition switch.

Mounting LocationWARNING: BELTRONICS cannot anticipatethe many ways the RX65 can be mounted.It is important that you mount RX65 whereit will not impair your view nor present ahazard in case of an accident.
Where to mount RX65For optimum detection performance, werecommend the following:
• Using the Windshield QuickMount, mountyour RX65 level, and high enough on yourfront windshield to provide a clear view ofthe road from the front and rear.
• Mount RX65 away from windshieldwipers, other solid objects, and heavilytinted areas that might obstruct the radarantenna or laser lens.

Installation
Windshield QuickMountRX65’s QuickMount windshield bracket isdesigned for unobtrusive and hassle-freemounting.
1 Depress the QuickMount button on thetop of RX65 (by the word BELTRONICS)and slide the QuickMount bracket into theslot until it is locked into the position whichbest fits the angle of your windshield (thereare four settings available). For extremelyhorizontal or extremely sloped windshields,the QuickMount bracket can be bent.
To ensure that the suction cups adhere tothe windshield firmly, be sure to keep bothyour windshield and the suction cups clean.
2 To adjust RX65 on your windshield,use the QuickMount adjustment buttonlocated on the top of the RX65, and slideRX65 forward or backward to obtain a levelhorizontal position.
When installed and adjusted properly, theback top edge of the RX65 should restsolidly against your windshield.
Caution! A few vehicles (including some Porsches)have windshields with a soft anti-lacerativecoating on the inside surface. Use of suctioncups will permanently mar this coating.Consult your dealership or the vehicleowner’s manual to determine if your wind-shield has this coating.
User’s TipYou can leave the QuickMount bracket inplace on your windshield, and easily removethe RX65 by pressing the adjustment buttonand sliding it off the mount. Again, be sureto position the bracket where it won’tpresent a hazard in the event of an accident.Additional mounts are available.

Controls and Features
Power On/OffTo turn the RX65 on, press the PWR buttonon the left side of the top case. When youturn the RX65 on, it goes through asequence of alerts.
If you prefer, you may program yourRX65 for a shorter power-on sequence. Seethe Programming section for details.
VoiceThe RX65 has our Digital Voice feature,which provides a digital voiceannouncement of the band being detecting.
If you prefer, you can turn the DigitalVoice feature off in programming. SeeProgramming section for details.
Power-on indicationAfter RX65’s start-up sequence is complete,the alphanumeric display will showHighway, City, or AutoScan to indicatewhich sensitivity mode is selected.
If you prefer, you can select alternatepower-on displays. See the Programmingsection for details.
AutoMuteYour RX65 has our patented AutoMutefeature. After RX65 alerts you to a radarencounter at the volume you have selected,the AutoMute feature will automaticallyreduce the volume to a lower level. Thiskeeps you informed without the annoyanceof a continuous full-volume alert.
If you prefer, you can turn theAutoMute feature off. See the Programmingsection for details.
Volume / Mute ButtonTo adjust the alert tone volume, press andhold the Volume/Mute bar located on thetop case.
The Mute button, located on RX65’stop case, allows you to silence the audioalert during a radar encounter.
To mute the audio for a single specificsignal, briefly press the Volume/Mutebutton. After that radar encounter haspassed, the mute will automatically resetand the audio will alert you to the nextencounter.
Highway / AutoScan / City SwitchThe City button selects RX65’s sensitivitymode. We recommend the AutoScan modefor most driving.
RX65’s AutoScan mode provides long-range warning, with minimum false alarms.In this mode, RX65’s internal computercontinuously analyzes all incoming signalsand intelligently adjusts the sensitivity.

You can also select conventionalHighway and City modes. When driving inurban areas where annoying X-band intrusion alarms and door openers arecommon, City mode can be engaged tolower X-band sensitivity and reduce X-bandalerts. Full sensitivity is maintained on allother bands. You can customize RX65’s Citymode sensitivity. See the Programmingsection for details.
Brightness ButtonRX65’s BRT button selects the brightness ofRX65’s display. There are four settings:Maximum, Medium, Minimum, and Dark.Press the BRT button to select yourpreferred brightness.
Dark ModeWhen you select the Dark mode with theBRT switch, RX65 changes to a very inconspicuous power-on indication: a veryBRT AD, HD, or CD. (In this display, the A,H, or C indicates AutoScan, Highway, orCity, and the D indicates Dark.)
When RX65 is in the Dark mode, thedisplay will not show visual alerts whenRX65 detects signals. Only the audible alertwill tell you of detected signals.
Audible Alerts
For Radar signals:RX65 uses a Geiger-counter-like sound
to indicate the signal strength and type ofradar signal being encountered.
When you encounter radar, a distinctaudible alert will sound and occur faster asthe signal gets stronger. This allows you tojudge the distance from the signal sourcewithout taking your eyes from the road.
Each band has a distinct tone for easyidentification.
X-band = chirping toneK-band = buzzing toneKa-band = double-chirp toneKu-band = high pitched buzzing tone
For Laser signals:Since laser signals are a possible threat
no matter how weak, RX65 alerts you to alllaser signals with a full laser alert.
For Safety signals:RX65 will alert you to these signals
with a double-buzz tone (and digital voice ifprogrammed) with a corresponding textmessage. A complete listing of the textmessages is on page 23.

Power ConnectorRX65’s power jack uses a telephone-typeconnector. This new 6-pin connector onlyworks with the included coiled SmartPlug,or the optional Direct-wire SmartPlug.
The coiled SmartPlug is a special powercord that has a power-on indicator (whichonly lights up when the RX65 is turned on),a bright alert light that warns of radar orlaser, and a convenient mute button righton the plug. It’s perfect for any car wherereaching the detector’s mute button on thewindshield is a stretch.
For discreet night driving, put RX65 inthe Dark mode, and use the SmartPlug foryour visual alerts. Other drivers won't knowyou have a detector.
An optional Direct-wire SmartPlug isalso available. This version includes a smalldisplay module, which can be wireddirectly into your electrical system, with a10 foot straight cord to route to your RX65.

Signal Strength Meter RX65’s alphanumeric display consists of280 individual LEDs, to provide an intuitiveultra-bright display of signal strength andtext messages.
RX65’s standard bar-graph signalstrength meter only displays information ona single radar signal. If there are multiplesignals present, RX65’s internal computerdetermines which is the most importantthreat to show on the bar-graph meter.
When RX65 detects radar, it displaysthe band (X, K, or Ka), and a precise bargraph of the signal strength. When RX65detects a laser signal, the display will show“Laser.”
NOTE: If you are operating RX65 in theDark mode, the display will not light whena signal is detected – only the audio alertwill be heard, and the flashing alert lamp onthe SmartPlug.

Threat DisplayRX65’s Threat Display option is anadvanced display for experienced detectorusers. Please use RX65 for a few weeks toget familiar with its other features beforeusing Threat Display.
To use the Threat Display instead ofthe bar graph signal strength meter, youmust select Threat Display in RX65’sProgramming (see pages 12-15).
RX65’s Threat Display simultaneouslytracks multiple radar signals and their relative signal strength.
Threat Display can help you spot achange in your normal driving environment;for example, a traffic radar unit being operated in an area where there arenormally other signals present.
The Threat Display is actually a miniature spectrum analyzer. It shows whatband each signal is and its signal strength.
Ka9 K2 X1Above is the Threat Display if the
RX65 was detecting a strong Ka-band, aweak K-band, and a weak X-band signal.
NOTE: If you use Threat Display, thebrief signal shown in the power-onsequence when you turn on your RX65 willalso be in Threat Display: an X with adecaying numeric signal.

Threat Display DetailsThe band designators (X, K, Ka) will
stay on the display for a few seconds afterthe signal has passed. This allows you to seewhat the unit detected, even on very briefsignals.
Tech DisplayBEL RX65’s new Tech Display option is alsofor the experienced detector user. In thismode, RX65 will display the actual numericfrequency of the radar signal beingreceived.
K 24.150Tech Display shows one K-band signal
at 24.150 gigahertz.Note: Even long-time detector users
will require a significant amount of time toget familiar with this new level of information about detected signals.

Pilot H (Letter) In this setting, RX65 will display “H” forHighway, “C” for City, and “A” forAutoScan.
Pilot V (Vehicle voltage) In this setting, RX65 will continually display“H” for Highway, “C” for City, and “A” forAutoScan, and the vehicle’s voltage. If thevehicle’s voltage drops below 10.5 volts, alow voltage warning is displayed, followedby an audible alert. A high voltage warningis also given if the voltage goes above 16.0volts. The high-voltage warning is alsofollowed by an audible alert.
VoiceVoice On (Voice alerts on) In this setting, all radar, laser, and SWS (ifprogrammed on) alerts will be accompanied by a digital voice.
Voice Off (Voice alerts off) In this setting, only the audio tones will beheard during an alert or SWS message.

City Mode SensitivityCity STD (Standard) In this setting, when you put RX65 in theCity mode, X-band sensitivity is significantlyreduced, to reduce annoyance from X-bandintrusion alarms and motion sensors.(factory default)
City LoX (Low X band sensitivity) In this setting, when you put RX65 in theCity mode, X-band sensitivity is reducedmore than the standard setting. This willreduce X band alarms from other sourceseven further, but also significantly reducesrange to X band traffic radar.
City NoX (No X band sensitivity) In this setting, when you put RX65 in theCity mode, it will not respond to any X bandsignals. WARNING: Only choose thissetting if you are absolutely certain thatthere are no X band traffic radar unitswhere you drive.
NOTE: These settings only apply whenRX65 is operated in City mode. X-bandsensitivity is not affected when used in“AutoScan,” or “Highway” modes.
BandsBandsALLIn this setting all radar, laser, and SWSfrequencies are monitored. This is thefactory setting, and it is highly recommended that you use your RX65 inthis mode.
BandsMODIn this setting, RX65 will warn you with anaudible alert, and associated text messagestating which band is turned off (i.e. “SWSOFF”). This warning is displayed during thestart up sequence (standard or fast).
WARNING: Only modify bands if youare absolutely certain that there are notraffic radar units using that specificband in your area.

Interpreting AlertsAlthough the RX65 has a comprehensivewarning system and this handbook is ascomplete as we can make it, only experience will teach you what to expectfrom your RX65 and how to interpret whatit tells you. The specific type of radar being
used, the type of transmission (continuousor instant-on) and the location of the radarsource affect the radar alerts you receive.
The following examples will give youan introduction to understanding theRX65’s warning system for radar, laser andsafety alerts.
Explanation
You are approaching a continuous radarsource aimed in your direction.
An instant-on radar source is being used aheadof you and out of your view.
An instant-on radar source or laser source isbeing used nearby. This kind of alert requiresimmediate attention!
Laser is being used in the area. Because laser isinherently difficult to detect, any laser alertmay indicate a source very close by.
A moving patrol car with continuous radar isovertaking you from behind. Because thesesignals are reflected (reflections are increasedby large objects), they may or may not eventually melt into a solid point even whenthe patrol car is directly behind you.
Alert
The RX65 begins to sound slowly, then therate of alert increases. The Signal Meter rampsaccordingly.
RX65 emits short alerts for a few seconds andthen falls silent only to briefly alert and fallsilent again.
RX65 suddenly sounds a continuous tone forthe appropriate band received. All segments inthe Signal Strength Meter are lit.
A brief laser alert.
RX65 receives weak signals. These signals maybe a little stronger as you pass large, roadsideobjects. The signals increase in frequency.

Explanation
You are approaching a radar unit concealed bya hill or an obstructed curve.
A patrol car is traveling in front of you with aradar source aimed forward. Because signalsare sometimes reflected off of large objectsand sometimes not, the alerts may seem inconsistent.
A patrol car is approaching from the otherdirection, sampling traffic with instant-onradar. Such alerts should be taken seriously.
You are driving through an area populatedwith radar motion sensors (door openers,burglar alarms, etc.). Since these transmittersare usually contained inside buildings or aimedtoward OR away from you, they are typicallynot as strong or lasting as a real radarencounter.
CAUTION: Since the characteristics of these alerts may be similar to some of the precedingexamples, overconfidence in an unfamiliararea can be dangerous. Likewise, if an alert ina commonly traveled area is suddenly strongeror on a different band than usual, speed radarmay be set up nearby.
Alert
RX65 alerts slowly for a while and thenabruptly jumps to a strong alert.
RX65 alerts intermittently. Rate and strengthof alerts may be consistent or vary wildly.
RX65 alerts intermittently. Rate and strengthof signal increases with each alert.
RX65 gives an X-band, or K-band alert intermittently.

How Radar WorksTraffic radar, which consists of microwaves,travels in straight lines and is easily reflectedby objects such as cars, trucks, evenguardrails and overpasses. Radar works bydirecting its microwave beam down theroad. As your vehicle travels into range, themicrowave beam bounces off your car, andthe radar antenna looks for the reflections.Using the Doppler Principle, the radarequipment then calculates your speed bycomparing the frequency of the reflectionof your car to the original frequency of thebeam sent out.
Traffic radar has limitations, the mostsignificant of these being that it typically canmonitor only one target at a time. If there ismore than one vehicle within range, it is upto the radar operator to decide which targetis producing the strongest reflection. Sincethe strength of the reflection is affected byboth the size of the vehicle and its prox-imity to the antenna, it is difficult for theradar operator to determine if the signal isfrom a sports car nearby or a semi-truckseveral hundred feet away.
Radar range also depends on the powerof the radar equipment itself. The strengthof the radar unit’s beam diminishes withdistance. The farther the radar has to travel,the less energy it has for speed detection.
Because intrusion alarms and motionsensors often operate on the samefrequency as X-Band radar, your RX65 willoccasionally receive non-police radarsignals. Since these X-Band transmitters areusually contained inside of a building, oraimed toward the ground, they will generally produce much weaker readingsthan will a true radar encounter. As youbecome familiar with the sources of thesepseudo alarms in your daily driving, theywill serve as confirmation that your RX65’sradar detection abilities are fully operational.
How “POP” Works“POP” mode is a relatively new feature forradar gun manufacturers. It works by transmitting an extremely short burst,within the allocated band, to identifyspeeding vehicles in traffic. Once the targetis identified, or “POPPED,” the gun is thenturned to its normal operating mode toprovide a vehicle tracking history, (requiredby law).

How Laser (Lidar) WorksLaser speed detection is actually LIDAR(Light Detection and Ranging). LIDAR gunsproject a beam of invisible infrared light.The signal is a series of very short infraredlight energy pulses, which move, in astraight line, reflecting off your car andreturning to the gun. LIDAR uses these lightpulses to measure the distance to a vehicle.Speed is then calculated by measuring howquickly these pulses are reflected given theknown speed of light.
LIDAR (or laser) is a newer technologyand is not as widespread as conventionalradar, therefore, you may not encounterlaser on a daily basis. And unlike radardetection, laser detection is not prone tofalse alarms. Because LIDAR transmits amuch narrower beam than does radar, it ismuch more accurate in its ability to distin-guish between targets and is also more difficult to detect. AS A RESULT, EVENTHE BRIEFEST LASER ALERT SHOULDBE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
There are limitations to LIDAR equip-ment. LIDAR is much more sensitive toweather conditions than RADAR, and aLIDAR gun’s range will be decreased byanything affecting visibility such as rain, fog,or smoke. A LIDAR gun cannot operatethrough glass and it must be stationary inorder to get an accurate reading. BecauseLIDAR must have a clear line of sight and issubject to cosine error (an inaccuracy,which increases as the angle between thegun and the vehicle, increases) police typically use LIDAR equipment parallel tothe road or from an overpass. LIDAR can beused day or night.

How Safety Radar WorksSafety Warning System, or SWS, uses a modified K-band radar signal. The SWS safetyradar system has 64 possible messages (60currently allocated). The SWS messagesyour RX65 can display are listed on thefacing page.
From the factory, your RX65 isprogrammed with SWS decoding OFF. IfSWS is used in your area, your RX65 willdisplay the safety messages associated withthe signal. If you wish to detect this system,use the Programming feature to turn RX65’sSWS decoding ON.
NOTE: Some of the safety messageshave been condensed, so that each messagecan be displayed on one or two screens onRX65’s eight-character display.
Since Safety radar technology is relatively new, and the number of transmitters in operation is not yet wide-spread, you will not receive Safety signalson a daily basis. Do not be surprised if youencounter emergency vehicles, roadhazards and railroad crossings that areunequipped with these transmitters. AsSafety transmitters become more prevalent(the number of operating transmitters isgrowing every day), these Safety radarsignals will become more common.

ProblemRX65 beeps briefly at the same location every day, but no radarsource is in sight.
RX65 does not seem sensitive toradar or laser.
RX65 did not alert when a policecar was in view.

Solution• An X-band motion sensor or intrusion alarm is located withinrange of your route. With time, you will learn predictablepatterns of these signals.
• Make sure that windshield wipers do not block RX65’s radarantenna and that the laser lens is not behind tinted areas.• Determine if your vehicle has an Instaclear®, ElectriClear® orsolar reflective windshield which may deflect radar or lasersignals.• RX65 may be in City Mode.
• VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) astopwatch method of speed detection, may be in use.• Officer may not have radar or laser unit turned on.
• Safety transmitters may not be commonly used in your area.
• Press the BRT button to deactivate Dark Mode.
• RX65 is in AutoMute Mode. See page 8 for details.
• RX65 is not making contact with the windshield to providestability. While holding down RX65’s QuickMount button,slide RX65 toward the windshield so that the back top edgemakes firm contact.
• A loose power connection or dirty lighter socket can causeRX65 to be briefly disconnected.
You can return all of the programming options to the factorydefaults by holding down the CITY and BRT buttons whileyou turn RX65 on.

ProblemRX65 will not turn on.
RX65 feels very warm.
Solution• Check that the power is ON.• Check that vehicle ignition is ON.• Check that vehicle lighter socket is functional.• Try RX65 in another vehicle.

2 Call us at 1-800-341-2288. We may beable to solve your problem over the phone.If the problem requires that you send yourRX65 to the factory for repair, we willprovide you with a Service Order Number,which must be included on the outside ofyour shipping box.
Enclose the following information with yourRX65:
• Your Service Order Number• Your name and return address• Your daytime telephone number• A description of the problem you are
experiencing.
Out Of Warranty RepairsFor out of warranty repairs, include prepayment in the amount you werequoted by the Beltronics Customer ServiceRepresentative. If the detector has beendamaged, abused or modified, the repaircost will be calculated on a parts and laborbasis. If it exceeds the basic repair charge,you will be contacted with a quotation. Ifthe additional payment is not receivedwithin 30 days (or if you notify us that youchoose not to have your RX65 repaired atthe price quoted), your RX65 will bereturned, without repair. Payment can bemade by check, money order, or creditcard.
