RESIDENT RESEARCH DAY— APRIL 26, 2013 Resident Research Day was held on Friday,

April 26, 2013 at the University of Arizona

in the Department of Obstetrics &

Gynecology. The guest speaker was Eve Espey, MD MPH, Professor of Obstetrics &

Gynecology at the University of New

Mexico where she is also Dean of Students

in the Office of Medical Student Affairs. Her

presentation was entitled, “Global Impact of

Abortion.”

Additional presentations included:

Shedding Prior to Ovulation Induction on Conception and Live Birth Rates in PCOS

CELIA VALENZUELA , MD—REMARKABLE MOM!

This year, Dr. Celia Valenzuela was recognized as a “Remarkable Mom” by Tu Nidito at their annual gala event where 5 mothers were recognized and honored for making a difference in the lives of children and families. Tu Nidito shares, “Dr. Valenzuela is one of the rare women who gives as much to the community as she does to her family, and we are proud to have the privilege of honoring her at the Remarkable Celebration. The event was held at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Dr. Pamela Lotke attended The Women’s

Health 2013, 21st Annual Congress in

Washington, DC this past March. She

participated in The Women’s Health & Sex

Differences Research Scientific Poster

Session. The poster session is co-

sponsored by the NIH Office of Research

on Women's Health. Dr. Lotke won First

Place for her poster entitled: Innovations

in Health Professions Education and Career

Development, Intrauterine Contraception

for Nulliparous Women: A Global Survey

of Providers’ Knowledge and Attitudes.

The Obstetrical Challenges, 30th Annual

Review Course was

held mid-March in

Phoenix, Arizona. Dr.

Cathy Herway,

Maternal Fetal

Medicine Fellow,

gave an oral

presentation entitled,

“Updates in Preterm

Premature Rupture

of Membranes.”

Two of our Chief

Residents also

delivered presentations at the Phoenix

Integrated Residency in Obstetrics and

Gynecology [PIROG], Resident Research

Night in Phoenix during March.

Dr. Tiffany

presented:

“Hemoglobin

A1C and Vaginal

Lacerations: A

Retrospective

Analysis.”

faculty member in the Department of

Obstetrics & Gynecology at The Universi-

ty of Arizona, arranged the visit at the

request of the Public Health Director of

Dalian. They would like to incorporate

laparoscopic surgery into their surgical

program at the University of Dalian. Dr.

Hatch provided videos that have been

translated into Chinese by Dr. Zou.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology

in the Department of Obstetrics & Gy-

necology welcomed 2 visiting surgeons

from the city of Dalian in China. They

watched surgery and began a dialog con-

cerning consultation between Arizona

and Dalian. Dr. Huang Xianli and Dr. Liu

Tiewei were guests for 3 days in January

2013. Dr. Changping Zou , a former

Paula is a Registered Nurse and has

been working in

80PC since the

fall. She moved

to Tucson 3 years

ago from New

England, is

married and has

4 adult children

along with 3

grand children.

Paula has

been a

nurse since 1999. Early in her career

she provided case management for

people with physical disabilities. In

addition, she has over 10 years of

experience working in labor and

delivery as a nurse where she worked

PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW STAFF in a small community hospital in New

Hampshire. Paul has also worked as a

triage nurse in an urgent care facility

prior to coming to UAHN. Paula says

she’s “very happy to be working n the

OBGYN department.”

When not working she

enjoys hiking, running and

birding. She is also a

volunteer teaching

literacy in Tucson.

Paula is very much

appreciative to her co-

workers for receiving such

a warm welcome!

Katherine is a Research

Specialist , Sr., in the Gynecologic

Oncology Division. She has a master’s

degree in psychology from Wake Forest

University. Katherine came to us from

Indianapolis, IN.

When not at work, she enjoys art, food

and traveling. Her favorite new

hobby is to explore on her bike.

Katherine welcomes opportunities

to hear about what’s going on in

Tucson and is always eager to try

a local recommended eatery!
