CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

There are three different types of conditional sentences in English:

1st Type: they are called REAL conditional because if one part of the sentence

becomes true the other one will also be true.

IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT+…, SUBJECT + WILL + INFINITIVE+ …

This is the most common pattern of this type of conditionals. However, you can

replace the future tense by: a MODAL verb, an IMPERATIVE or even a PRESENT

(Zero conditional; just when it refers to absolute truth)

If you study, you will pass

You can go out if you finish your homework

If you see an accident, call an ambulance.

If you heat butter, it melts.

2nd Type: they are called POSSIBLE or PROBABLE conditional sentences,

because the realization of one part doesn’t mean the realization of the other

action:

IF + SUBJECT + PAST+…, SUBJECT+ WOULD + INFINITIVE+ ….

You can also find instead of WOULD: SHOULD, COULD,..

If you came to the party, you would enjoy it.

I would phone him if I had his phone number.

3rd Type: they are called IMPOSSIBLE conditional sentences, because they refer

to the past, and you can never change it.

IF + SUBJECT + HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE+ …, SUBJECT + WOULD HAVE +

PAST PARTICIPLE+ …

If I had known the truth, I would have said it.

I would have gone to the party if he had invited me.

UNLESS ( a menos que; can be used instead of “if not”)Unless you study harder, you won’t pass your exams.PROVIDING/ PROVIDED THAT (Siempre que)Travelling by car is very convenient providing that you have somewhere to parkAS LONG AS (con tal de que, mientras que)You can use my car as long as you drive carefully.SUPPOSE/ SUPPOSING THAT (suponiendo que)Suppose that Jack asks her for a dance, will she accept?ON CONDITION THAT ( a condición de que)I’ll give you the money on condition that you wash my car.IN CASE (en caso de que)Take an umbrella in case it rainsBUT FOR (si no fuese por, si no hubiese sido por)But for the rain, we would have come
