GE Biax compact fluorescents come in two lamptypes - plug-in and electronic. Whilst a majority ofthe features described here apply to both lamptypes, plug in lamps require separate runninggear and the gear used can effect the lamp’sperformance characteristics.

Warm-up timesGE Biax lamps offer an almost instant start, butrequire a few minutes to reach full brightness, particularly in colder temperatures. This slighttime lag may make the lamp initially appear dull.

Amalgam technologyGE amalgam dosing technology providesa more consistent light output, not only throughlamp life, but also in varying ambienttemperatures and lamp orientations.

Using outsideWhen Biax lamps are employed outdoors, theymust be used in enclosed fittings. The lamps willreach full brightness when the ambienttemperature around the lamp reachesapproximately 25°C. The effects of differentambient temperatures on light output for typicallamps is shown in the chart Fig 1. With amalgamproducts, 90% of light output is achievedbetween the temperatures of -6°C and +65°C.

Enhancing colour qualityWhile the colour temperature of Biax is similarto an equivalent incandescent lamp (it producesthe same ‘whiteness’ of light), the colourrendering performance (its ability to accuratelyreproduce colours) is slightly lower. It is thisdifference that may lead some users to feel thatthe light appears dull. However, Biax lamps, which use Polylux triphosphors, are far better atrendering colours than most commonly availablefluorescent tubes.

    Characteristics of electronic lamps

Dimming of electronic retrofit lampsAs the electronic gear in the base of these lampsneeds a full and constant current, they cannot be dimmed or used with other electronicswitching devices.

Eliminating flickerBiax lamps operate at very high frequencies thusavoiding the annoying flicker typical of somefluorescent installations operating withconventional control gear.

Using existing fittingsBiax lamps are much lighter than manyconventional retrofit compact fluorescent lampsand therefore do not impose exceptional loadson light fittings.

Biax maintains an acceptable level of light output within a normal rangeof temperatures.

One of the characteristics of Biax is a very low fall off in light output over the life of the lamp.
