IntroductionThe following descriptions define importantterms used in this manual.

● The SPIRIT® Communications SystemConnecT/R provides you with the ability toadd telephone devices to your SPIRITSystem. It connects to the controller.

● The controller is the central processorthrough which all SPIRIT calls in yourcompany are processed.

● The SPIRIT Telephone (with the AT&TSPIRIT logo on it) is specialized to workwithin the SPIRIT Communications System. You do not need a SPIRIT Telephone at-tached to the ConnecT/R.

● The telephone device is a modem, answer-ing machine, standard telephone, etc., youcan add to the SPIRIT System via theConnecT/R. You can add up to two tele-phone devices to a single ConnecT/R, anduse them to place and receive calls. Interac-tions with specific SPIRIT System featuresare described later in this book.

* SPIRIT is a registered trademark of AT&T.1

Figure 1. SPIRIT ConnecT/R

The ConnecT/R allows you to add telephonedevices to your SPIRIT System in a way thatgives you much more flexibility than before.Although it has always been possible to connectanswering machines, facsimile machines, mo-dems, or standard telephones via the "lineauxiliary jack" on the controller, that jack re-stricts their access to a single telephone linewithin the SPIRIT System. But since theConnecT/R connects to ports designed forSPIRIT Telephones themselves (which canaccess multiple lines), the telephone devices canfunction on as many telephone lines as the portwas customized to handle.

Page 6: Communications System ConnecT/R Owner’s Manualpdf.textfiles.com/manuals/TELECOM-S-Z/Spiriti connect tr owner... · Introduction The following descriptions define important terms

2Although you can have a SPIRIT Telephoneconnected to the SPIRIT ConnecT/R, it isn'tnecessary. In fact, many business uses, such astelephones in hotel lobbies or facsimile ma-chines with built-in telephones, will not have aSPIRIT Telephone attached to the ConnecT/R.

Examples of the kinds of telephone devices youcan add to your SPIRIT CommunicationsSystem via the ConnecT/R are:

● Standard telephones

● Cordless telephones

● Answer/record machines

● Credit card readers

● Facsimile machines

● Auto-dialers

● Modems

The devices must be single-line (requiring onlyone line for operation) and stand-alone (able toprocess calls without being attached to a con-troller or other system device).

This Onwer's Manual will help you set up yourSPIRIT ConnecT/R for your particular businessneeds.

Step 1 — If you attach a SPIRIT Telephoneand a telephone device, set MODE for callaccess priority.

NOTES:

If you attach more than one telephonedevice to the ConnecT/R, this settingapplies to them equally.

If you don't have a SPIRIT Telephoneattached, the MODE setting has noeffect.

With the ConnecT/R, a SPIRIT Telephone and atelephone device share a single connection tothe controller. Therefore, you need to establish

which will have priority in any given situation. You do this by setting MODE on the back of theConnecT/R. The examples in the table on thenext page and the descriptions that follow willhelp you decide which setting is appropriate foryour needs. The table is not an exhaustive list;your own business needs will determine howyou set the mode. You can change the MODEsetting any time your needs change.

Mode 1 (equal access) gives the telephonedevice and the SPIRIT Telephone equalaccess to the connection, regardless of whichmade the connection first (like an extensionphone in your home). You could use thismode, for example, if the attached device is acordless phone and you want to use it as anextension. If you attached an answer/record machine, this mode would allow youto record conversations because both therecorder and the SPIRIT Telephone can beon the call at the same time*.

Mode 2 (SPIRIT Telephone has priority)always gives priority to the SPIRIT Tele-phone whenever it is "off-hook" (that is,when its receiver is up or the speakerphoneis on), regardless of whether the telephonedevice is also off-hook or was off-hook first. For example, if you have an answer/recordmachine and you want to be able to intercepta call being answered by that device, thismode setting is ideal because as soon as theSPIRIT Telephone goes off-hook, it willdisconnect the answer/record machine.

If the telephone device remains off-hookwhen the SPIRIT Telephone gets control, the

telephone device will be disconnected, butwill be reconnected to the call when theSPIRIT Telephone is hung up.

NOTE In modes 2 and 4, if the SPIRITtelephone is connected to the call and you tryto use the telephone device, you won’t hearanything because the telephone device won’tbe connected.

Mode 3 (telephone device has priority)always gives priority to the telephone device, regardless of whether the SPIRIT Telephoneis off-hook or was off-hook first. This is themost appropriate setting for facsimile ma-chines and computer modems because itprevents the data transmission from beinginterrupted if someone inadvertently picksup the SPIRIT Telephone receiver.

NOTE: In modes 3 and 4, if the telephonedevice is connected to the call and you tryto use the SPIRIT Telephone, you won’thear anything because the SPIRIT Tele-phone won’t be connected.

Mode 4 (first-on has priority) gives priorityto the first device that makes the connection. For example, if the SPIRIT Telephone hascontrol, the telephone device can't access thecall until the SPIRIT Telephone is on-hook—and vice versa.

Page 12: Communications System ConnecT/R Owner’s Manualpdf.textfiles.com/manuals/TELECOM-S-Z/Spiriti connect tr owner... · Introduction The following descriptions define important terms

8Step 2 — If the telephone device has touchtone dialing, set ADMIN for call restrictions.

Both rotary and touch tone devices can berestricted from making certain kinds of calls. The difference is that rotary devices are re-stricted at the port (along with the attachedSPIRIT Telephone, according to the way theport was customized) and touch-tone devicesare restricted by setting ADMIN on the back ofthe ConnecT/R.

This step is required if the telephone device istouch tone only or has been set to touch tone. Ifthe telephone device can be set to either touchtone or rotary, we recommend this step so that ifthe telephone is ever set to touch tone, its callswill be restricted in the way you want. You canchange the ADMIN setting any time your needschange.

NOTES:

● If you have more than one telephonedevice attached to the ConnecT/R thissetting applies only to those set as touchtone, and applies to them equally.

If you have a SPIRIT Telephone orrotary dial telephone attached, their tollrestrictions will not be affected by theADMIN setting.

The ADMIN setting you choose doesn'thave to match the call restrictions setfor the SPIRIT Telephone.

If you have to dial a single digit (usuallya 9) before dialing an outside number, and you DO NOT have to dial a 0 or 1before dialing a toll call, the telephonedevice cannot be toll-restricted.

Regardless of how you set the ADMINswitch, the emergency number 911 isalways available.

Page 13: Communications System ConnecT/R Owner’s Manualpdf.textfiles.com/manuals/TELECOM-S-Z/Spiriti connect tr owner... · Introduction The following descriptions define important terms

Use the following table to choose the settingappropriate for your needs.

ADMINSetting Restrictions

1 None. (Allows unrestricted calling.)

2 Prohibits dialing 0 or 1 as the firstdigit.

3 Prohibits dialing 0 or 1 as the first orsecond digit.

4 Prohibits dialing outside calls.(Allows making intercom callsonly.)

Step 3 — Mount the ConnecT/R (optional).

The ConnecT/R is designed to be placed onyour desk or mounted on any vertical surface.Do not place it on the floor. Hardware has beenincluded to mount the ConnecT/R on the wall:two plastic wall-mount tabs, two anchors, andtwo #6 screws.

Position the ConnecT/R so the side with thejacks and settings is down or to the side, butnot up.

Remove the backing from the plastic tabs.

Gently position a tab by aligning the end ofthe adhesive with the outside edge of theConnecT/R and the side of the tab againstthe inside of one of the feet. Repeat for thesecond tab.

7.

With the tabs at the top, hold the ConnecT/Ragainst the wall where you plan to mount itand use a pencil to mark the location of theholes in the tabs. The bottom of theConnecT/R should be at least two feet fromthe floor.

If you have plywood walls or walls with asturdy supporting structure (either woodstuds or cross members), partially screw thetwo screws into the wall at the marks, re-move them, hang the tabs on the screws, andthen tighten the screws.

For plaster, plasterboard, cinder block orbrick surfaces, drill a 3/16" hole at each markand insert an anchor into each of the holes.Gently tap each anchor with a hammer until

it is flush with the surface. Screw the screwspartially into the anchors, remove them, hang the tabs on the screws, and thentighten the screws.

Step 4 — Connect the ConnecT/R to thecontroller, and the telephone device andoptional SPIRIT Telephone to the ConnecT/R.

Please check the cabling requirements in Appen-dix A before proceeding. Consult with theperson who customized your SPIRIT Systembefore attaching the ConnecT/R to thecontroller.

NOTE: The "4-wire cord" mentioned in thesteps below comes with the ConnecT/R.Any cord you may have that is connectinga SPIRIT Telephone to the controller isalso 4-wire cord.

1. Disconnect the SPIRIT Telephone. If one isalready installed, disconnect it from the walljack or the STATION jack on the controller, whichever is closest to where you want tolocate the ConnecT/R.

2. Connect the ConnecT/R to the Controller.Using 4-wire cord, plug one end into the

ConnecT/R. You can connect it by pluggingit into the TEL DEVICE jack on theConnecT/R or by plugging it into the walljack that is connected to the TEL DEVICEjack on the ConnecT/R.

To install two telephone devices on aConnecT/R, use a T-type adapter (AT&Tpart # 267A2 or 267A). Plug the adapter intothe TEL DEVICE jack (either directly orindirectly through a wall jack, as describedabove) and plug the telephone devices intothe adapter jack.

Connect the ConnecT/R to the AC poweroutlet. Plug the power connector into thePOWER jack on the back of the ConnecT/R.To prevent the power cord from pulling outeasily, make a small loop of cord near thepower connector and slip it behind the strainrelief tab next to the POWER jack on theConnecT/R. Plug the wall transformer intoan AC power outlet that is at least 3 feetaway from the controller and not controlledby a wall switch. (If it is any closer to thecontroller, you may hear a hum on yourSPIRIT System.)

NOTE: Use only a UL Listed wall plug-inpower transformer that has Class 2outputs and the following characteristics:

Using the Telephone DeviceNote that the ConnecT/R may feel warmunder normal operation.

Telephone devices attached to the ConnecT/Rwill operate similarly to the way they would ifthey were installed directly into a normal tele-phone line, but they will be affected by the waythe station port was administered and the wayyou set MODE and ADMIN. If you experiencedifficulties or if the device behaves in unex-pected ways, consult the Troubleshootingsection of this guide. If difficulties persist, callthe AT&T Helpline at 1-800-628-2888.

Answering Calls

If the attached telephone device has ringingcapability, it will ring according to the way theport was customized to ring for available lines. That is, if an intercom or external call wouldcause a SPIRIT Telephone attached to the portto ring, the telephone device will also ring underthe same circumstances.

The following SPIRIT features are exceptions(they will make the SPIRIT Telephone ring, but

not the telephone device): HFAI (intercom callswill not ring), Busy Station Ringing and ManualSignalling.

NOTE: The SPIRIT Telephone and thetelephone device share a connection. Therefore, if the SPIRIT Telephone is beingused for an intercom or telephone conver-sation, the telephone device cannot answerother calls that may be ringing.

Placing Calls

To place an outside call from the telephonedevice, pick up the receiver or its equivalent anddial the number. In general, the telephonedevice will gain access to an outside lineaccording to the way the port was customizedfor the Automatic Line Selection feature. Thatis, the device will be connected to whatever linethe SPIRIT Telephone would connect to, if itsreceiver had been picked up instead. (If the portdoes not have Automatic Line Selection, therewill not be a dial tone on the telephone device, and it will not be possible to originate anoutside call.)

Calls are noisy or have static Cordless telephones are subject to the sameinterferences when connected via the ConnecT/Ras when connected to a normal telephone line.Poor call quality can be improved by movingtoward the base station. You may be able toimprove the general transmission quality bymoving the location of the cordless base stationor by changing the electrical outlets used by thebase. Environments with large amounts of metalin the building structure will generally limit theuse of cordless phones.Make sure the ConnecT/R's transformer is atleast three feet from the controller.

Messages consist of dial tone only This can occur if the calling party hangs upwithout leaving a message and the answer/record machine requires a signal from theCentral Office before terminating the recordingprocess. If the machine has a "voice activation"(VOX) setting, switching to VOX will oftenprevent the problem.
