Charts on pages 2 and 3 show that the Columbus metro

area experienced greater-than-average employment

gains in logistics, healthcare, and finance and insurance,

and government. The MSA suffered losses in business

services (including IT) leisure, retail, and manufacturing.

All estimates will be revised, perhaps significantly, March

18. The Q1 report will discuss these revisions.

The 1,200 net loss in retail indicates smaller-than-

average impacts from holiday hiring.

The 1,000-job gain in healthcare brings the gain for the

year to 6,500 (5.7%).

Government employment, which has been unusually

volatile, gave back most of its third-quarter gain.

Federal, state, and local government employment each

declined.

QUARTERLY ECONOMIC UPDATE | Q4 2012

COLUMBUS REGION PER CAPITA INCOME

The charts on pages 4 and 5 show growth in per-capita

personal income (PCPI, adjusted for inflation) over the

last decade for residents of the Columbus Region and

each of its component counties.

As a result of weak employment growth prior to the

recession, regional PCPI fell below the national

average in 2004. However, the 2009 decline was only

4.2% versus 7.0% for the U.S., and growth subsequently

has been 5.2%, slightly better than average.

As the dominant county, Franklin County's growth

pattern is similar to the region's. However, PCPI peaked

in 2006 before falling 7.0% in the following two years

and rising only 3.4% after the recession.

RESIDENTIAL SALES, COLUMBUS MLS

AREA

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING PERMITS,

COLUMBUS MSA Year-over-year building permit growth weaker than

average, but only because of a very strong 2011:

Building permits were issued for 1,934 residential units in

the Columbus MSA during the fourth quarter, up 16%

from the previous year. The comparable U.S. gain was

33%. The seeming weakness in the MSA is due to an

unusually strong 2011 (see chart) driven by unusual

strength in the volatile multi-unit category at the end of

2011.

Multi-unit permits again a majority of regional

construction: Permits for units in multii-unit structures

in the MSA were 59% of the total; these units were 39%

of permits nationally.

Number of home sales in Columbus up 23%: Home

sales in the Columbus Multiple Listing Service area

(larger than and somewhat different from the Region)

totaled 5,528, up 22.9% from last year. Nationally, home

sales during the quarter were 12.9% higher than last year,

and were 20.5% higher in the Midwest.

For the year, sales rose 34.4% locally and 29.1%

nationally..

The dollar volume of MSA home sales totaled $900

million, 33.7% greater than during the fourth quarter of

2011.

Prices in Columbus higher year-over-year: Columbus

MSA house prices in the third quarter were up 0.3% from

a year earlier, compared to a loss of 0.5% in Ohio and no

change at the national level. The local gain ranked 30th

among the 64 million-plus regions in the U.S. Some of

the largest year-over-year gains were among the hard-

hit California and Florida MSAs.

QUARTERLY ECONOMIC UPDATE | Q4 2012

GDP AND INFLATION

Growth in U.S. GDP near zero; consumption

increases:

The preliminary estimate of U.S. Gross Domestic

Product (GDP) showed an annualized decrease of

0.1% in the fourth quarter, versus a 3.1% gain in the

third quarter.

Personal consumption (70% of the economy) grew

2.2%, up from 1.6% in the previous quarter. The

weakness in total GDP was driven by government

sector contraction, which subtracted 1.3 percentage

points from the total. The Thomson

Reuters/University of Michigan Index of Consumer

Sentiment declined sharply in December, likely as a

result of fiscal cliff concerns.

U.S. GDP growth to rise gradually to 2.7% by the end

of 2013: The January Wall Street Journal economic

forecasting survey expected GDP growth to increase

gradually through the year. Most economists put the risk

of a recession in 2013 at 20% or less -- about the same

risk as last quarter.

Overall inflation rose to 1.9%, up from 1.6% in the third

quarter. Core inflation (excluding food and energy items)

ticked down one-tenth of a point to 1.9%.
