According to IFLAAccording to the The

International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA),  collection development focuses on methodological and topical themes pertaining to acquisition of print and other analogue library materials (by purchase, exchange, gift, legal deposit), and the licensing and purchase of electronic information resources

Page 8: Collection development

According to joseph c. shipman has defined collection development as “the sum total of library materials books, manuscripts serials government documents ,pamphlets and microfiche, punched card ,computer tapes ect. That make up the holdings of a particular library in other words, it is planned ,systematic development of an already existing collation”

Totally library collation development is :-

BOOK SELECTION TOOLS :Many libraries are not aware of books available

in the market ,as a result they are unable to select books of interest to their users. Different tools are there which help librarians to select the books some of these tools are:-

Publishers catalogues:-1. Ex- book talk,1970 (wiley eastern .new

“Book selection policy and program me” The policy is essential in the selection process for

guiding and determining future decisions regarding the selection of library materials .book selection policy establishes principles and limits of selection and provides criteria that should be used as a guide in selection.

in public library following rules are followed selecting the books:-

Book selection should include all the subjects that apply to community condition and that reflect community Interest.

Page 21: Collection development

Continue…… Make sure your collection of local history is as

extensive and as useful as possible. Avoid selection of books for which no demand

is evident and books that have definitely outlived their usefulness.

Maintains impartiality in selection. Make no special on controversial subjects.

Provide as far as possible books that will meet the needs of specialist or other whose work will benefit the community.

Maintain so far as possible promptness and regularity in supplying new books.

Page 22: Collection development

“School libraries following rules are followed” provide material that will enrich and

support curriculum .Provide material that will stimulate growth

in factual knowledge ,literary appreciation aesthetic values and ethical studies .

Provide material representative of various religions, ethnic and cultural groups and their contribution to our heritage.

Page 23: Collection development

In collage libraries following rules are followed while selecting the books”Should provide resources needed to meet

curricular demands of the college. It should acquire materials like periodicals,

encyclopedias, ect necessary for inspiring teaching .

Should provide general collection of classics so as to instill in the students enthusiasm for great books from which will spring the lifetime habit of good reading.

Page 24: Collection development

Need of book selection:-The resources in the library are limited:-Every library has its limited resources in the

limited resources only the library has to provide for maximum readers useful quality material.

All books cannot be useful :-Many books are published everyday in the

world, and every published book cannot be useful for every reader. Hence every selects the books ,according to their aim and necessities.

Page 25: Collection development

Principles of selection of document

Selection of document is both as art and a science. The following principles of selection are most important and should be given weight. They are as follows:-

Dewey’s principles:-The famous library science scholar gave a principle for

selection of document for the libraries, which states the best reading for the largest number at least cost According to this principle a library should select within the financial resources available, the best document s which may satisfy the information needs of maximum number of users.

.

Page 26: Collection development

Continue……

Drury’s principle:-It was enunciated by Drury in 1930.it states, to provide the right

book to right reader at the right time .in this principle reader is the central theme .A document is right or otherwise is to be provide when the user needs it for use. The selector should know the users and their requirement .he should select only that material which caters to the informational, educational and recreational needs of the users.

McColvin’s principle:-This principle was advanced in 1925 by L.R.McColvin. He states

that –books in themselves are nothing. they have no meaning until they are made serviceable by demand. hence the book selection, by this principle , is directly related to demand, the greater is the resultant and possible service.

Page 27: Collection development

Continue…… the term supply refers to the availability of

reading material in all its varieties. Demand on the other hand , means expressed and unexpressed informational needs of the users. This principle advocates the selection of only those documents which are demanded by the users for their informational needs.

Ranganathan’s principle :- the first 3 laws of library science enunciated by

Ranganathan are most helpful in formulating the principle s of selection of the document for libraries.

1. First law:-documents are for the use,2. Second law:-ever reader his/her document.3. Third law:-every documents its reader.

Page 28: Collection development

AdvantagesSpace saving.Easy access.Easy to handle.Easy to transmit.Time saving.Low cast.Less manpower involved.

Page 29: Collection development

Disadvantages:-Installation process complex and costly.Lack of infrastructure.Insufficient budget.Shortage of expertise.Durability only up to certain year.

Page 30: Collection development

Collections are developed along collection profiles defined by user requirements.

The limits to collection building are financial constraints, available space, resources for processing

Page 31: Collection development

Conclusion :-

Book selection is the first task of librarianship it precedes all other process catalogue, classification. Or administration and it is the most important. BOOK SELECTION TOOLS : “Book selection policy and program me” Principles of selection of document is very important for book selection

Collection Development for Print- Problems

Page 33: Collection development

INTRODUCTION Collection development is a term that is

used by the library community to refer to "the selection and acquisition of material for an expanding collection and decisions on the material to be included in that collection“.

Typically, collection development decisions apply at different stages of an institution's workflow, including the selection, acquisition, processing, housing, weeding, retention, preservation, relegation and discarding of library materials.

Page 34: Collection development

Collection development is a process of building up and improving the collection in the library and it is a very important function of a library.

Collection development is now viewed as being a part of the wider activity of collection management, which includes "collection policy development, materials budget allocation, selection, collection analysis, collection use and user studies, training and organisation of collection development staff, preservation, and cooperative collection development“.

This presentation attempts to highlight the major problems of collection development such as information sources from the point of view of a university librarian.

Collection developments involve understanding the nature of requirements of users and anticipating their demands.

Collection development is not just equivalent to acquisition of documents but much more than that. Acquisition of documents consists of selection and procurement of documents. Document selection is a highly professional work.

Acquisition work involves three sets of people. (i) Library management and users. (ii) Librarian and library staff (iii) Publishers and suppliers. Hence acquisition problems can be looked from three different ways.

Page 38: Collection development

Document Acquisition Problems1. Document selection Problems.2. Lack of Man power resources.3. Financial restrictions.4. Lack of support from teaching staff.5. Lack of proper weeding out policy.6. Background or Document Acquisition Transaction.7. Need of Subject Background.8. Multiplicity of Vendors.9. Document Procurement Problems.10. Need for Avoiding Duplication.11. Choice of Vendors and Problem of Local Vs Foreign

Suppliers.12. Problems Relating to Terms of Payment.13. Price Verification.14. Vendor Controlled Order Plans.15. Problems of subscription to journals.16. Other Problems of Documents Acquisition.

Conclusion Collection development deals with re-interpretation of traditional library mission and practices for the digital library environment. Information professionals have to actively develop, maintain and manage wide range of resources. Collection development should aim at balancing among buying, borrowing and available space. There are a number of problems in collection development. Many are common and few are unique to library concerned.
