WELCOME TO THE CITY OF CLEBURNE. If you are new to the area, let me assure you that you have made a good choice. Cleburne stands at the crossroads of an extraordinary opportunity. Today is where our rich history and heritage meets our future. The Chisholm Trail Parkway that connects Cleburne and Fort Worth with a thirty minute drive affords small town living with big city access.
CLEBURNE WAS A CITY OF RAILS AND TRAILS. Once a stop along the historic Chisholm Trail, Cleburne was home to one of the largest railroad shops in the world. Today, you can visit our history in one of our many museums, but Cleburne is more than just a historic stop. Today, Cleburne boasts a wide array of culture. You can take in a play through the Plaza Theater or witness a production through the local Carnegie Players, hear a variety of jazz at Songbird Live, enjoy outdoor concerts at Market Square, take in the vistas along one of North Texas’ best municipal golf courses (don’t forget to try North Texas’ best golf course burger), or just relax in one of our many parks and there is more to come.

CLEBURNE IS A GREAT PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY. Like many others, I chose Cleburne because of the quality of life and the great schools. The past two years, the academic advanced placement program at CISD was rated in the top 3% of all Texas schools and is nationally recognized as one of the very best. Our neighborhoods are quiet and friendly. A simple trip to the grocery store requires additional time to catch up with neighbors and friends. Some say American cities aren’t what they used to be. They haven’t been to Cleburne.
CLEBURNE HAS A LOT OF ENTERTAINMENT TO OFFER. We are currently building a minor league baseball park that will be home to the historic Cleburne Railroaders as well as concerts and outdoor events. The park will open for the 2017 season, just in time to defend Cleburne’s 1906 Texas League Championship. The park will soon be surrounded with other entertainment and shopping opportunities.
Thank you so much for listening to what Cleburne has to say. I believe our city has something to communicate to people of all walks and stages of life whether you are raising a family, visiting, or looking for a nice place to retire. Please consider Cleburne when making that decision.

FLYING? The Cleburne Regional Airport has a 5,700 by 100 foot runway and can support aircraft as big as mid-size corporate jets with no landing fees. PREFER TO DRIVE? There are several main highways leading to Cleburne but if you are coming from the DFW area, the newly opened Chisholm Trail Parkway toll road feeds directly into Cleburne and saves drivers time and hassle.
If you’d like to relax and enjoy the scenery, travel on an
AMTRAK TRAIN which travels North and South through Cleburne. For more information call 800-268-7252.
LAKE PAT CLEBURNE offers 1,500 acres of water for swimming, boating, fishing, and kayak and jet ski rentals with four boat ramps conveniently located around the lake. Lake Pat Cleburne is also the location for the 4th of July Celebration with activities and a fabulous fireworks display in the evening.
CLEBURNE STATE PARK is a 528-acre park that includes a 116-acre spring-fed lake for swimming, fishing and boating. The state park also offers 5.5 miles of mountain bike trails throughout the park. The park has a variety of campsites, including full hookup sites, a primitive area for youth groups, and screened shelters. Group facilities include a group camp with a dining hall and two barracks that can accommodate up to 48 people overnight, and the new Cedar Lodge group hall with an attached kitchen, outdoor fireplace and a recreation area.

WINSTON PATRICK MCGREGOR PARK is a 10-acre park with a botanical style featuring native plants and a rose garden. The park features walking paths, a gazebo, a children’s garden and a variety of both educational and recreational activities.
BUFFALO CREEK meanders through downtown Cleburne and Hulen Park with walking paths and benches to sit and relax. Buffalo Creek was historically used as a watering stop for cattle drives while traversing the Chisholm Trail.
HULEN PARK offers pavilions, picnic tables, a playground, a walking path, a baseball field and basketball and tennis courts. The park is the home of Steam Engine 3417, which ran on the Santa Fe Railroad system during the 1900s. Splash Station is also located at Hulen Park with a leisure pool, two 120-foot winding slides, an interactive spray pad, water spray feature and a lazy river. The competition pool is a 25-yard, 8-lane facility open year round. In winter months, Hulen Park is transformed into a Christmas wonderland for the annual Whistle Stop Christmas with more than 3.5 million lights. The park is lit every evening from the Monday before Thanksgiving through December 31st.
CLEBURNE GOLF LINKS is situated on the shore of Lake Pat Cleburne, offering an 18-hole, par-72 course for general playing or tournaments, boasts a comprehensive practice facility with a full-service golf shop and a clubhouse grill with a large outdoor deck.
BRAZOS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA brings the symphony to Cleburne with an eclectic blend of orchestral music, including Classical, Big Band, Movie Tunes, Americana and Pop. They have a 50-piece orchestra with concerts during the spring, fall and winter.

THE GREATER CLEBURNE CARNEGIE PLAYERS is a community theater named after Andrew Carnegie that started performing in the 1980s at the Cleburne Carnegie Library which is now the home of the Layland Museum. The Carnegie players present four shows a year at the performing arts center in the Cleburne Conference Center.
THE PLAZA THEATRE COMPANY performs in a theater all year long with classical musicals, comedies, dramas, Christmas shows, and more. In 2010, the Plaza Theatre Company was voted the best theater company in North Texas by WFAA. The theater has shows on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 pm and a Saturday matinee at 3 pm.
THE LAYLAND MUSEUM is housed in the 1904 Carnegie Library Building which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The museum offers exhibits, research materials, and programs dedicated to the history of home and family life in Texas. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
THE CHISHOLM TRAIL was a route used in the late 19th century to drive hundreds of thousands of cattle from Texas to Montana, it cut right through Johnson County near Cleburne. Don’t miss The Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum which includes Johnson County’s original courthouse, a blacksmith shop, a stagecoach station, replica teepees, and more.
THE BIG BEAR NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM features a collection of Native American artifacts donated by Leonard “Big Bear” Beal. Additional artifacts supplement his collection to provide a complete overview of Native Americans in North America from their arrival more than 13,000 years ago to the present. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
THE GONE WITH THE WIND REMEMBERED museum contains one of the most comprehensive and extensive GWTW collections. The museum houses not only the typical auction house memorabilia, but also a number of one-of-a-kind and extremely rare pieces not found in other collections. More than 6,000 historical pieces are showcased in state-of-the-art, climate controlled displays. Even the entrance to the museum is a replica of the Tara door. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

HISTORY OF CLEBURNE Open land and the flowing waters of Buffalo Creek lured Native Americans and buffalo herds to what would become Cleburne decades later. The area’s first dwelling was built in 1854, near the creek.
CALLED CAMP HENDERSON, THIS AREA WAS HOME TO A CIVIL WAR TRAINING CAMP.
In 1867, she was officially made the seat of Johnson County and the name was changed on July 4 to honor General Patrick Cleburne. Many local men had served with this respected General during the Civil War.
Lots surrounding the square began selling for five hundred dollars and businesses sprang up to attract the cowboys from the Chisholm Trail just west of town and to provide for the early settlers. Josephine Wren, the first female business owner, opened the Cleburne House on the northwest corner of the square. By 1880, businesses included saloons, stores selling pharmaceuticals, dry goods, groceries, and hardware, as well as banks, boarding houses, a distiller, a shooting gallery, and wagon yards.
Livestock and Indian corn had been the main moneymaker until the demand for cotton boomed. By 1890 the Santa Fe Railroad was employing five hundred.
DOWNTOWN WAS PACKED WITH THRIVING BUSINESSES BY THE TIME 1900 ARRIVED.
Market Square was filled with farmers and ranchers selling everything from cattle to vegetables. Soon the city drilled water wells, schools and churches were scattered around town and the Carnegie Library was built.
New ways of transportation made their debut. Streetcars, the Interurban, the first airplane built in

Texas (made in Keene and Cleburne). As well, one of the first cars in Texas was built and on the road here in 1910.
During the next three decades, the way of life still included cotton and railroading, but the town was changing. There was more manufacturing and less agricultural, more people and roads. Yellow Jacket Stadium was completed in 1941. New schools were built and Hill College expanded to Cleburne.
Industries moved here and home-owned businesses grew, providing jobs and money. In recent years, gas drilling has done the same.
