Anything is possible when working with small particles of glass from tight photo-realism to loose impressionism. Working with the panel format, you will learn how to control color density, shading, soft and hard edge lines and some unique specialty looks. This class will focus on the principles of multiple firing to create a rich, vibrant panel piece. Just imagine how you can expand these techniques to creating unbelievable wall pieces, tiles and continuous murals. As one of the early kiln working artists, Michael has pioneered this and many other glass working processes. His dynamite slide show will inspire as well as educate. He does request that only those with previous fusing experience take this class. Students bring: notebook and writing implement, basic glass tools and a couple of simple photos or images to work from. 2 Days. Tuition $450. Thursday - Friday September 15-16 9:00am-5:00pm When the Frit Hits the Fan This workshop covers a variety of different frit techniques and processes and is less focused on imagery. However, many of the things taught here may be utilized in creating them, including multiple firing. We will cover the basic practices of Fritography, combining them with unusual shapes and use a variety of dam methods. There are several other ways of working with frit we will explore as well including “Frit Sticks”, “Vitrios” and a new process called “Scratch and Frit”. I think you will find these to be useful and fun too . . . and that is a tough combo to beat! An exciting lecture and scintillating slide show will also be included! Students bring: Basic glass working tools, cutters breakers, exacto knife, hair dryer, tile nippers, small flathead screwdriver, small brushes, spoons, tweezers, dust mask, notebook, pen. Beginning Fritography The painterly use of crushed glass frits and powders has opened up a whole new world of artistic imagery. Anything is possible when working with small particles of glass from tight photo-realism to loose impressionism. Working with the panel format, you will learn how to control color density, shading, soft and hard edge lines and some unique specialty looks. This class will focus on the principles of multiple firing to create a rich, vibrant panel piece. Just imagine how you can expand these techniques to creating unbelievable wall pieces, tiles and continuous murals. As one of the early kiln working artists, Michael has pioneered this and many other glass working processes. His dynamite slide show will inspire as well as educate. He does request that only those with previous fusing experience take this class. Copper Foil Studio: Taking Your Skills to the Next levelIn this three-day class artist Roy Kapp will show you how to cut faster and more accurately, foil and solder more flawlessly, and patina and polish your artwork to perfection. You’ll see special techniques for challenging cuts, especially on the lovely but sometimes difficult handrolled glasses, including high-texture glass like ripples. Learn the easy way to build custom sized frames that will give your foil panels a beautiful, professional look. Roy will also demonstrate making better piece patterns and repair techniques for copper foil panels. After this class, you’ll be amazed at your skills. Tiffany lampsOdyssey TechniqueCreate an heirloom quality lamp in this Tiffany reproduction class. Demos include each technique required to create a Tiffany style lamp, using the Odyssey method. Class meets four times over a 6-week period, allowing students more time to complete their lamps. Cutting and soldering skills are required. Fusing: 201Gain more fusing experience while becoming more familiar with various kilns and their controllers. Learn to program our most popular kilns’ digital controller. Create your own projects while learning how to develop the appropriate firing schedules. Students will have an opportunity to work with mica powders, decals, metal inclusions and other decorative fusing elements. Delphi will supply a selection of molds for class use. Textured Fused BowlCreate a truly unique piece of art in this two week intermediate fusing class. Students will fuse and slump a 12” sculptural bowl while learning about the fusing cycles required to create dimension and depth using fiber products and frit. The following week will include applying frit to add detail and texture. The bowl will be slumped after the class and can be picked up or mailed at a later date. Vitrigraph KilnLearn to set up and fire a vitrigraph kiln. This method will allow you to produce streaming hot glass into swirls of color and shapes. Learn how to work with the water-slide photo fusing paper and create rich sepia toned decal. We will then incorporate the decal into a fused glass design. Blown Glass Ornaments for BeginnersCreate custom blown glass ornaments the simple way. Making custom glass ornaments is easy with Glaskolben pre-blown clear glass cylinders with blow pipe ends. These ornaments have the look reminiscent of traditional European artisans. Students will use a Hot Head torch and MAPP gas to create several ornaments. Students will be encouraged to experiment with and apply advanced kiln working techniques and apply it to their own style. Instructor Patty Gray will demonstrate combing, pulling stringers from a vitrigraph kiln, making and applying pattern bars, use of stringers, gold leaf, mica, glass powders/frit and lots more. Students will have the opportunity to do cold-working/finishing of glass and everyone will be introduced to the different machines/equipment.
