November 2016 From the Principal's Desk Dear Clark families, October has been a very busy time at Clark. We started off the month with our Terry Fox wrap up assembly, and ended with a lively Spirit day where staff and students wore their Hallowe’en costumes or orange and black and took part in a parade around the school. Judging by the smiles and laughter during the activi- ties a great time was had by all! Our October 7 th professional development day was focussed on two of our school goals: nu- meracy and climate. Our staff worked in collaboration with staff from Aloma Cres PS and Birchbank PS to examine the EQAO scores and set goals for the year. In the afternoon we worked on our climate goal which focusses on Restorative Practices – a 3 year initiative at Clark which began last year. In the month of October we also held our second School Council meeting which featured a special presentation by Mrs. Neal one of our Physical Education Teachers. Mrs. Neal presented infor- mation about how she is using technology and Google Classroom in her program. This is a new experience for our Clark Sharks and we look forward to the collaborative learning experience these tools provide. For more information about school initia- tives, please join us at the School Council meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday December 1 st at 9:00am. Once again, Clark Blvd PS has been “adopted” by the Brampton Beast hockey team and so we are having regular draws for tickets to their games, played here in Brampton. During homeroom, students will have time to complete a ballot for their chance to win tickets. As part of the draw students are required to answer a question, related to the team and/or involving math. Students are encouraged to arrive on time to school, for their chance to win 4 tickets for their family! A special congratulations to Ms Barr and Mrs. Alaimo who have been hired into permanent teaching positions at Alloa PS and James Grieve PS respectively. We thank them for their support and wish them all the best. Thank you to Ms. Laing who was filling in for Mr. Calabria in his absence. We welcome back Mr. Calabria as well as Ms Ristevski in FDK and Ms. Khurram in Grade 3. On November 11th, we will be commemorating Remembrance Day with a special assembly at 9:00am in the gym. Remembrance Day Assembly

Lest we Forget!

Clark will be holding its annual Remembrance Day assembly on Friday

November 11th at 9:00 a.m. in the school gymnasium.

“It’s coming!”

“What’s coming?”

“The Esteem Machine!”

“ What’s that?”

I’m not sure... but it says here on this poster that it will be at Clark Blvd P.S. on Thurs-

So parents, come join the grade 3, 4 and 5 students as they sing their way to Self- Es-

teem and Celebrate You and Me!

There will be two performances, on December 15, and an evening performance at 6:30

with two tickets provided for each students family, and an afternoon performance at

11:40 when we encourage parents with young children and strollers to attend.

Grade 3 students are submitting ideas and models for the design of the Esteem machine,

Grade 4 students are submitting artwork for the programme cover (black and white) and

Grade 5 students are submitting posters for the actual presentation, all due to room 11

on Thursday December 1st.

Thank you supporting your child’s development of Self-Esteem in themselves and in

Healthy Schools Committee

Reach For The Top Intramural Student Leadership Conference

Last Month Grade 4 and 5 students submitted applications to be a part of Clark Blvd.’s Healthy Schools Committee. Some stu-dents who chose intramurals as their first choice activity, were invited to attend a day of training in Guelph, ON with 300 other students from Southern Ontario. These students will lead the intramurals at Clark. They are planning to offer Open Gym starting in mid-November, after training other students at school to be part of the Intramural Leadership Team. Look forward to seeing more from Ayaan, Abigail, Ibrahim, Josie and Jathy this month. Many other committees are being formed. We will be looking for staff volunteers to supervise these leadership groups. Look for more Healthy Schools initiatives in December. Parents were also invited to join the Healthy Schools Committee, to help Clark set active healthy living goals for this school year. If you are a parent interested in attending these meetings to set goals for Clark, please contact Mrs. Neal at 905-793-6060 or [email protected]. We will be having a Healthy schools meeting sometime in November. Those who contact Mrs. Neal will be informed of these meetings.

Currently the Junior grades are involved in an European Handball Intramural. From these participants, a select Clark Team will be chosen to represent our school at an extra-curricular tournament at Dorest Park PS on Wednesday November 16.

Building Community Partnerships: The Brampton Beast are also working with Grade 4 and 5 students during their gym times once a week to learn more about hockey. Our school has been adopted by the Brampton Beast, so we also enjoy contests to win Brampton Beast Home Game tickets. We are finalizing the paperwork for our own Skate Library, where students will sign out skates and helmets for a short period of time. Parents from School Council will be helping administer this program. Send your questions about the Skate Li-brary to Mr. Sebastian in the office. Bramalea SS students from the Student Leadership Course are running Friday intramurals for Grade 4 and 5 students this fall. Clark Students love all these opportunities to get active in the gym.

More to come! Don’t worry Primary Students! Mrs. Neal is planning an intramural for you too! We already have Ms. Juhasz’s class signed up to be part of the Healthy Schools committee. Can’t wait to get active with all of you! Welcome Back Mr. Calabria! We look forward to getting our students moving here at Clark. Thank you to Ms. Laing, who did a fabulous job working on the Physical Literacy of all her students during Mr. Calabria’s absence.

#ChooseAction on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 20 to 26, 2016. This year, we ask our Peel community to ‘#ChooseAction to Be the Difference’ in their classes, offices, schools, communities or world, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone. The Peel Board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media. Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bul-lying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying identify forms of bullying identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the

bystander or the trusted advocate determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment understand that bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions determine positive ways to interact with others in an accepting, inclusive way demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html.
