Mr. S. K. Misra has been actively involved with Social Welfare activities from an early part of his career. In the 1970's, while serving in the State of Haryana, he had set up a Home for abandoned and helpless children, children without families where they were looked after by war widows as their mothers and sent to good schools and provided all facilities. The "HOME" is still functioning at Rai in district Sonepat.

In order to provide good educational facilities at par with the best Public Schools in the country to children of economically depressed parents, Mr. Misra took the initiative of setting up 'The Motilal Nehru School of Sports' at Rai in Haryana where 80% of the children whose parents had an income below a certain level received free education in this residential school. This included free board and lodging, uniforms, medical care etc.

As the Tourism Secretary in the Government of India, he conceived and launched the famous 'Surajkund Mela' which has been in existence for over 25 years now attracting tourists from abroad as well as domestic tourists. The Mela brought together master crafts persons from India and abroad where they could demonstrate their skills and sell directly to the customer eliminating the middlemen.

As the Chairman of INTACH, Mr. Misra focused on the village of Raghurajpur in Odisha. He provided the necessary infrastructure and markets for the painters, sculptors and toymakers of the village thereby raising their income levels and developing the village as a well known attraction for rural tourism.

As the Chairman of the NGO INDIAN TRUST FOR RURAL HERITAGE AND DEVELOPMENT (ITRHD) he has initiated rural projects in the States of Jharkhand, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan and Nagaland.
