In Our Community In Our CommunityMulti-Use Community Building FundraisingThe Citadel Community Association (CCA) is embarking on a new Multi-Use Community Building – this being the first Community funded ground-up capital construction project since 1992. The CCA has collected capital from Casino volunteering for a number of years and have received matching grant funding from the Alberta Department of Culture and Tourism. As such – this project is receiving a high degree of exposure and publicity from the City of Calgary and Provincial Government as a role model of a Multi-Cultural Community working together to provide a facility to be used by all.

Although we have the funding for the construction of the building shell, we are still looking for additional funding to make up the shortfall for furnishings, fittings and an outdoor entertainment area with firepit to host winter events. The CCA is therefore introducing the opportunity for businesses to contribute to this building project and the Community of Citadel. We have

three ways in which a Business and / or Individual can contribute:

(1) Sponsorship of Building Materials: – e.g. Paint, Roofing, Siding, Bricks, Windows, Doors etc. Any Company that sponsors all or a portion of the materials towards the construction of the building will be rewarded with a permanent plaque / advertisement on the building indicating the company’s contribution. Contributions of materials and/or labour will help to reduce the construction costs and allow the CCA to apportion the capital funds towards other building enhancements, furniture and fittings.

(2) Buy-a-brick Campaign: We have introduced a cash-based sponsorship program to raise additional funds towards the building and furnishings. We will re-ceive cash donations and recognize the contributor in the form of advertising on plaques on the outdoor entertainment area. Everyone or every Compa-ny that donates towards the

Community building will have a “brick” on which we will engrave the name of the sponsor / Company. We will have Bronze ($50 to $200), Silver (>$200), Gold (>$500) and Platinum (> $1000) plaques for different donation amounts.

(3) Membership Incentives: The Citadel Community Association is actively embarking on a member-ship drive to increase our current Membership base – which in turn will introduce a capital injection into the Community and facilitate new programs. We would like to provide members with additional incentives to make a membership more attractive and financially beneficial. The image alongside is a sample of a membership card which is issued to all our members. The suggestion is that, upon presenta-tion of an active membership card, the CCA member would receive a nominal discount, coupon or promo-tional incentive from participating businesses. Nu-merous other Communities in Calgary have adopted this incentive opportunity model for their members and have proven to not only increase the associa-tion memberships, but also increase the traffic to the businesses participating in the program (Win-Win).

Participating companies will receive a notice which can be presented at the entrance, shop window or checkout counter and will receive the recognition / publicity from the CCA website, Facebook Group, Citadel Link and

email communique to the entire membership base.

If you are interested in participating in any of these pro-grams, please speak to the CCA representative (or email [email protected] or [email protected]) and we will ensure that you are contacted and included into the program. We would like to thank you in advance for your investment in your community.

In Our Community In Our CityCitadel Community Center Construction Update:The start of the construction was hampered with the onset of unseasonal winter weather conditions in September, however, this was followed by unseasonal warm weather which has allowed us to get construction back on track. The build is scheduled to be complete in May of 2019 – however, it remains weather dependent – at least until we have completed the framing structure, exterior and roof. We will be completing the building foundations and will then start with the framing of the structures.

Streets Bylaw: Snow and Ice Removal The City of Calgary has approximately 5,700 km’s of sidewalks. Of these, The City is responsible for clear-ing snow for roughly 10 per cent of these sidewalks, with the majority of the accountability being that of the adjacent property owner. In June 2018, City Council approved amendments to the Streets Bylaw to incor-porate a fine schedule and an escalating fine structure for property owners who do not clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall ending. Here’s how the Streets Bylaw works: • When a sidewalk or pathway adjacent to a privately-

owned property is not cleared, a complaint can be issued through 311 to Community Standards.

• A Community Standards Officer will go and inspect the sidewalk. If the snow and ice has not been cleared, the officer will leave a warning at the property giving the owner 24 hours to comply. At this time the Officer will also decide if a fine is warranted. The fine can be issued with or without compliance on the notice.

• The officer then returns 24 hours later and if the owner has not complied, the officer will assign the snow and ice removal to a contractor and the property owner will be charged for the removal service.

• The fine for not removing snow/ice from a sidewalk/pathway is $250, with an escalating scale for subse-quent convictions to the same property owner/ occu-pant over a 12-month period. This fine is in addition to removal charges which are a minimum of $150.

Minimum Penalty*

Specified Penalty

Second of-fense in a 12-month period

Third and subsequent offense in a 12-month period

$150 $250 $500 $750

• Please note, a vehicle such as a bobcat is not permitted to be used on a sidewalk, except in conjunction with construction sites where permits have been obtained for street use.

To report an un-cleared sidewalk, please contact 311. Learn more about bylaws related to snow and ice on Calgary.ca.

DID YOU KNOW??On average, it takes 7 – 15 years to grow a Christmas tree.

Residents are reminded that this remains a construction zone with heavy duty machinery and haulage trucks. Please maintain caution and patience when you are in the vicinity of the construction site and watch for signs indicating closures.

We apologize for any inconvenience – but this build is for the benefit of the entire Community of Citadel and the disruptions will prove to be worth it when we have our own Community building. During the construction – the rink will be used as a Storage / Staging facility for the contractors in order that we can keep the parking lot open. Therefore, there will be NO ice this season.

In Our CityCouncillor ReportEvery four years The City of Calgary creates business

plans and budgets to deliver on what’s important to Calgarians. The 2019-2022 service plans and budgets have been developed and approved by Council based on what The City heard from Calgarians throughout their consultation process. For more information on what services The City is providing, how much those services cost and how The City is spending your tax dollars, please view the 2019-2022 service plans and budgets at calgary.ca/yourservices.

The City of Calgary and the Calgary Public Library will host free, family friendly New Year’s Eve fun at the new Central Library, Olympic Plaza and the Municipal Atrium at City Hall. There will be something for ev-eryone including activities such as skating, story time, children’s dance party, performances and much more! An early indoor countdown for the kids begins at 9 p.m. at the new Central Library. Annual fireworks display will be held at midnight. More information is available at calgary.ca/NYE.

I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christ-mas, Happy Hanukkah and all the best in the New Year.

Neighbourhood EconomicsWhen thinking about your monthly purchases,

would you like to spend money locally? Even just 10% of spending in local economy can create a stronger more resilient neighbourhood. Below are a few ways to help you grow the local economy:

1. Are there local mechanics in your community that are affordable? Using local car washes, auto parts and insurers all ways for drivers to think local.

2. Engage and support the local pharmacies, bookstores, hardware stores and convenience stores. Does your community association showcase these local spaces in your neighbourhood?

3. If you can support local restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops and breweries. These are one of the easier ways to support a local economy.

4. Find local sporting events, films, and the arts to sup-port. By attending these events you support the local art and culture scene.

Your FamilyBest Picks for [Active] Indoor Play!Winter hits hard in Calgary and there come days

when we simply cannot go outside safely. When those days come, think Active Indoor Play! Active Play is any sort of physical movement that gets our children (babies too!) “huffing and puffing”. Activities like these increase our kids’ heart and breathing rates, which in the long run increase their energy and improve their physical health and well-being. Canadian physicians recommend a mix of adult-organized and free play activities, split between 2-3 hours a day for toddlers and preschoolers. Children should not be inactive for more than an hour at a time! It’s important to remember that Active Play does not require large spaces or huge chunks of time. Short bursts throughout the day (20 minutes) are just as effective (sometimes even more so) than one extended activity.• ANIMAL ALPHABET: Choose an animal for each letter

and move like they do! Crunch like a Caterpillar, Dig like a Dingo... Keep active for the whole alphabet!

• SCREEN SAVER: We know how hard it can be to limit screen time... but one of the main reasons why we try

to stay away from it is because it keeps our kids station-ary for too long. The solution? Re-enact what’s happen-ing on the tube! Flip around with the little mermaid... stomp with the dinosaurs... race like Lightening Mc-Queen.

• TUMMY TIME: Babies need exercise too! Tummy Time can be tricky, but if you’re finding it difficult, try dif-ferent kinds of tummy time; try putting your baby on YOUR tummy, so they can see your face and feel the rhythms of your breathing. Babies also love baby faces — put them on a mirror so they can see their own!

The Calgary NW ECD Coalitions consist of three coali-tions who have joined forces with parents, community members, organizations and professionals, who are all working together to better the lives of young children and their families. We work hard to support five impor-tant developmental areas for children based on the Early Development Instrument (listed above). We are always looking for interested parties to join our coalitions.

If you are passionate about children and their future, and would like more information about the Calgary NW ECD Coalitions, or if you have any questions, please email us at: [email protected].
