• The job of the circulatory system is to transport substances to and out of the cells throughout the body.

It delivers:

Oxygen

nutrients

Hormones

it picks up:

CO2 and

Cellular waste

2.  Anatomy of the C. S.  The main organs are:

• The Heart.  It is a muscular organ that pumps blood and fluids trough an elaborate system of  vessels.

• Blood: liquid tissue that  transports nutrients, waste and hormones. contains 3 different types of cells (Red, white, and platelets)and plasma (water +solutes)

• Vessels  Tube like structures that distribute blood through the body include: A. Veins transport blood to the heart(contain valves and carry poorly  oxygenated )B. arteries transport blood away from the heart (no valves and carry oxygenated blood )

C. capillaries narrow vessels  blood flow from capillaries to venules. Capillaries allow exchange fluids between blood and interstitial  fluid.

Blood flow from capillaries to Veins

Aim: compare and contrast pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation

Hw: Answer questions hand out  practice labeling blank heart diagram.  Quiz tomorrow

1. Go over hw. general description of 2 pathways (systemic and pulmonary)

2. Anatomy of the heart

3. Complete description of pathway blood follows in each circulation

Apr 129:06 AM

Pulmonary circulation:

Loop in which blood travels from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.

Systemic circulation:  The pathway that blood follows from the heart to cells of tissues and back to the heart.
