Branch Chair
Jenny JohnsonMerseyside and North Cheshire Branch
Our branch has enjoyed some great successes in 2014-15, with some wonderfulevents and many highlights. I will endeavour togive some examples, yet they are too numerousto give justice to all of them! We have beenparticularly impressed with the high attendancefigures at some of our key events such as PeterCheese addressing CIPD members and studentsat University of Liverpool and LJMU as well as ajoint event with South Cheshire and NorthStaffordshire Branch at Crewe Hall. Other highlysuccessful events included Mairi Probinspeaking in Warrington about employeeengagement and her experience at IcelandFoods, Nigel Risner and Ray Pendleton inLiverpool and employment law events inWarrington, Chester and Liverpool.
As well as providing highly popular speakers, wehave also been planning for 2015-16, building onour prior experience. We have decided to inviteCIPD HQ speakers to a number of our events andare delighted to include some in our programmethis year, including Peter Cheese (back bypopular demand!), Edward Houghton andWilson Wong.
A number of us went to ACE in Manchester lastyear and are going again this November. I warmlyencourage you to attend, since Manchester is soclose to us and I guarantee that you’ll benefitfrom going. Personally, I enjoyed the keynotespeakers, yet also benefitted from numerousconversations over coffee and lunch.Furthermore, I gained a lot of new informationfrom the various stands and exhibitors.
In my capacity as Director of the M.Sc.programme at the University of Liverpool, as wellas my CIPD Chair role, I am delighted that there isto be a Student Conference this year the daybefore ACE. Additionally, the NAP conference isrecommended as a way to meet regional HRprofessionals and gain innovative ideas fromgreat speakers.
We are always keen to attract new volunteers, soif you are willing to help in any capacity, do emailme and I’ll direct you to the most suitable contactin our team.
This year, we are delighted that Peel Ports hasagreed to sponsor our programme. Please readabout their exciting plans for our region in thearticle inside. Also, may I express our gratitude toour two advertisers, namely LJMU and Universityof Liverpool.
Last, but certainly not least, may I thank ourvolunteers who work so tirelessly behind thescenes to provide a programme of events eachyear for you to enjoy. We look forward towelcoming you to many of our events this year –put them in your diary now!

Peel Ports
As one of the largest port authorities in the UK, employing 1,100 direct colleagues across 6major port locations, Peel Ports is transforming the way port centric logistics is deliveredwithin the UK. The current construction of a £300m deep water container terminal,Liverpool2, will see 95% of the largest container vessels able to call at the Port of Liverpooland is considered a game changer adding much to the powerful arguments for the NorthernPowerhouse.
Howard Sloane, the Group HRD, sits on the Company’s Operating Board, reporting directly intothe CEO. This enables the HR function to affect change operationally whilst remaining strategicin its long term plans. And since joining at the end the of 2011, a succession of developmentsacross the HR framework as part of the HRD’s strategic objectives has helped to “redefine thevalue of HR in Peel Ports”.
“To ensure we could meet the requirements of a changing business it was essential to identifyimprovements that would benefit all employees and would enable Peel Ports to become anEmployer of Choice. When I joined, we didn’t have much in the way of employer brand butthrough effective employee engagement, a complete redesign of the HR team and a significantamount of social networking, Peel Ports has now become a work place that many talented peopleare drawn to.
We asked the business what it wanted and it said it needed efficient and effective support from aproactive HR team, better and quicker recruitment and growth of a talent pool linked to futurebusiness needs. And over the last three years and through some periods of significant change, the HR team has delivered this and much more. It is now a fully integrated and value addingfunction and is seen as crucial to our operational effectiveness.”
Through a process of changing the HR focus, the Peel Ports HR team have managed to adopt amore engaging and open approach to business partnering with employees throughout theorganisation. And the results are significant.

In addition to the above, a new Group wide Engineering Apprenticeship scheme has been developed to ensure the skills for the future business needs can be met as well as initiatives around benefits, engagement and performance management, resulting in a number of industry awards including the Pensions Quality Mark PLUS award which is only given out to approximately 100 businesses in the UK each year.
For Howard Sloane, having worked in HR for many years, he knows that getting so much done in such a short space of time is crucial to the organisation’s success. He said “The transition from a reactive, unmeasured HR team (just over three and a half years ago), to a forward thinking, performance measured, integrated and trusted partner is testament to the hard work, talent and commitment of the whole HR team. Through effectivepartnerships we have brought about an evolution which has challenged an age old industry, bringing it much further forward than expected in terms of people management.
And in developing bespoke functions within HR such as the Talent Team (Resourcing), HRConnect (HR Shared service ) and Reward and Benefits we have managed to drive efficiencies andcost savings throughout the business. Crucially, the business partners are now able to grow anddevelop the best talent to meet the operational requirements of arguably the most strategicallyimportant logistics operation in the UK right now.
And with 500 additional headcount for Liverpool2, the new £300m deep water containerterminal, which is due to open for business at the end of 2015, the future for Peel Ports Group andthe HR team that supports it looks very bright indeed.”

The policy adviser role is to provide an interface between the branch and the CIPD on all issues relating to the public policy agenda, thus raising the visibility of key strategic HR and HRD issues.
The Branch has the opportunity to input into Government Consultative Papers, to respond to such papers the CIPD requests occasionally the views of Branch members. The range of topics is diverse and responses have to be given within a short timescale typically from a few weeks toa few days. About 12 requests are received each year spread across a range of topics.
So that our Branch can influence the outcome of such consultation exercises, over the nextyear we will produce a list of members who will be willing to provide such an input to topics ofinterest to them.

This is a particularly exciting time for education centres and their relationship with CIPD as renewed energy for student involvement is evolving through successful student conferences in London and Scotland and new Learning and Development standards to broadenthe educational offering. The importance of students to CIPD can be seen through the fee structure with reducing fees for student members and increasing involvement of students through Branch structures.
On Tuesday 3rd November the North Area Partnership (NAP) Student Conference will takeplace in Manchester. This will be opened by Peter Cheese and its key theme will be thedevelopment of core capabilities within the HR profession. Senior HR professionals willconduct interactive sessions and workshops. This is certainly a not – to – be missed event forall those studying for CIPD qualifications at all levels.
Social media has also broadened access and debate for student communities across the Branchregion with both Twitter and Facebook sites helping to advertise events and activities andoffer support and engagement. Students are increasingly playing roles on local committeestructures as “friends” or in shadowing roles or by offering particular areas of expertise. Don’tbe shy – use the website and Update to confirm the dates of local events and meetings andcome along, participate, network and play a full and active role. Students are a vital part ofCIPD and the future of HR so get in touch, bring your ideas and have a successful transitionthrough to the next stage of your career.

Winning a freeticket to the NAPconference wasgood news. Thecontent hadalready intrigued me and I was hoping forthought provoking inspirational sessions withmutual learning through networking.
I found a professional, positive, funatmosphere with friendly people, whoseemed to buy into the ethos.
There was emphasis on the importance ofpeople making the difference. That valuessuch as integrity, positive attitude, involvingpeople, trusting people all drive performancenot rafts of policies and performanceindicators.
A surprise was learning the benefits oftwittering. We were encouraged to tweetusing the phrase #CIPDNAP15. This helpedconsolidate key points and learn perspectiveof other tweeters in my sessions and also inother groups.
One of my tweets stated ‘ It is not thelearning event that is most important, it iswhat people do differently as a result of theevent’. Some of the things I will be doingare:
1. Integrate more social media into sessions I deliver.
2. Renew efforts to focus on the importance of positive values and how they aid decision making and behaviour
3. Write a blog for my website collating useful tweets from the conference.

Our new Branch Treasurer will be MichaelDonnan, a Wirral based CharteredAccountant in practice, but the majority ofthe work will be undertaken by the firm’sPractice Manager, Ramona Durrant. In thisshort article we introduce and briefly profilethe new team.

During his time at the firm Mikedeveloped an interest in training anddevelopment and spent a time working fulltime with National Tax Training in London. Thisis an interest which he has continued, forexample by organising CPD courses for hislocal branch of the ICAEW over the past 20years, as well as regularly speaking on taxation matters.
Having run his own practice for 9 years until2007, for the past 8 years Mike has been TaxPartner in a leading Cheshire practice, a rolewhich he still undertakes on a part time basis. However this Spring, Mike has set up a newbusiness with a more local Wirral, Merseysideand Chester focus, with the aim of being ableto give a more personal, bespoke service tolongstanding and new clients alike.

Ramona’s role as Practice Manager will encompass the practiceadministration and finances, as well as HR and IT.
Mike comments “having run my own practice previously, I realised that the PracticeManager role was fundamental to providingexcellent client service and Ramona was theperson I identified as ideal for it”.

Steps Ahead Mentoring offers jobseekers one-to-one mentoring sessions to help them improve
their employability skills, boost their confidence and find work. The programme is mainly geared
towards young jobseekers (aged 18-24) and is run by the CIPD, with support from Nesta and
The Cabinet Office. We partner with Jobcentre Plus in promoting the programme across all their
offices in England, Wales and have been piloting with selected Jobcentre Plus offices in
Scotland since November 2014. During an average of six face-to-face meetings, mentors can
advise on CV writing, give interview and job-hunting tips, and provide their mentees with the
chance to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed when looking for a job. CIPD
members have already volunteered thousands of hours in support of the programme and 73%
of the young people who take part have gone on to find a job or work experience.
