    Exhortation

P Beloved in the Lord! As we draw near to the newborn Christ chil

into the presence of holiness. Gathered around His manger, looHis face, we are unworthy guests. Yet His very presence in our

Gods love for us. He earnestly desires to bring an end to ouoffends and opposes His Word. In His grace He grants us

Confident in the love God has shown toward us through Chris

grievous faults before God and one another. Therefore, let us dra

and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the

    Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth.

P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against Youdeed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seek

grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten S

mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our

Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will

Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to e

Declaration of Grace Mark 16:16; John 1:12

P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son

to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name

He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit.

He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.

Grant this, Lord, unto us all.

    C Amen

    Service of the Word

Introit Ps. 2:12, 46; antiphon: Liturgical Text

P When all was still, and it was midnight,

C your almighty Word, O Lord, descended from the royal throne.

P Why do the nations rage

C and the peoples plot in vain?

P The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,

C against the LORD and against his anointed.

P He who sits in the heavens laughs;C the Lord holds them in derision.

P Then he will speak to them in his wrath,

C and terrify them in his fury, saying,

P As for me, I have set my King

C on Zion, my holy hill.

    Old Testament Reading

    The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,on them has light shined.

You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy;they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest,

as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian

For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

    and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fiFor to us a child is born, to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end

on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

    C Thanks be to God.

things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered themin her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that theyhad heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

    Confession of Faith

Luther's Explanation of the Second Article of the Apostles' Creed

P The second article of the Apostles Creed: Redemption

C I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

    born of the virgin Mary,

    suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

    He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heavenand sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge both the living and the dead.

    P What does this mean?

C I believe that Jesus Christ, true God,

begotten of the Father from all eternity,

and also true man, born of the virgin Mary,

is my Lord, who has redeemed me,

    a lost and condemned person,

    purchased and won me from all sins,from death, and from the power of the devil;

    not with gold or silver,

but with His holy, precious blood

and with His innocent suffering and death,

that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom

and serve Him in everlasting righteousness,

    innocence, and blessedness,

just as He is risen from the dead,

lives and reigns to all eternity.

    This is most certainly true.

Then with the shepherds let us go

To see what God for us has done

In sending us His own dear Son.

7 Come here, my friends, lift up your eyes,

And see what in the manger lies.Who is this child, so young and fair?

It is the Christ Child lying there.

While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the king,

Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;Haste, haste to bring Him laud,

The babe, the son of Mary!

2 Why lies He in such mean estate

Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christian, fear; for sinners here

The silent Word is pleading.Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
