The misunderstanding that must be avoided is that the substitution of Christ in our place is somehow a trick that is played on God, or, to put it in more refined terms, that our redemption by the work of Christ in our place is a sort of fiction, whereby we are placed under a great ‘as though’, that is in fact not true. … Sin must be seen as something so serious that man could not resolve it, but only God Himself. God’s righteousness must be measured by His treatment of sin in the person of His Son. The unity of Father and Son must be measured by the perfect obedi-ence of Christ, and the Incarnation must be taken seriously as a complete action, whereby Christ became a real man, like ourselves in all things, excepting sin. - Paul van Buren

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. - Matthew 5

The prophecy, the legislation spoke of whenever he would die. - Sufjan Stevens, ‘The Transfiguration’

Prelude O Taste and See R. Vaughan WilliamsCTK Singers

Prayer (Collect) of Preparation:

Deliver us when we draw near to You, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind: Grant that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections, we may worship You in Spirit and in Truth. Amen

Call to Worship Liturgist: Nathan Barczi

Leader: Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

Congregation: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Leader: Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.

Congregation: Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

Leader: He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.

All: Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. — Psalm 107.1-9

Invocation

PreparationNote: Please silence all cell phones and other electronic equipment.

Call to WorshipGod calls his people to assemble for worship; ac-cordingly the church calls itself together.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Music: William Williams; Words: John Hughes

God’s people sing not only as an expression of our love for God but also to remind ourselves of our place in God’s redemptive work.

The church is marked by its singing, from Israel’s deliverance through the Psalms to our worship today.

Call to Confession

Leader: You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. — Psalm 51.16,17

Prayer of Confession

All: Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinful-ness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Declaration of Absolution

Leader: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. To those who repent and look to Jesus Christ for their salvation, the absolution of sins is effected in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen.

Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

Congregation: the Maker of heaven and earth.

Leader: O Lord, open our lips,

Congregation: and our mouths will declare your praise.

Leader: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

Declaration of Absolution God declares through his Church that everyone who repents and believes in Jesus Christ is com-pletely forgiven from all their sins and their guilty consciences cleansed.

Call to ConfessionIn God’s presence, the evil that mars our lives – corporate and individual – comes to light. Through Jesus Christ, we are safe to be honest about our-selves because we fear no condemnation.

Scripture ReadingSo faith comes from hear-ing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10.17

SermonGod has ordained the preaching of His Word to illuminate and apply the good news of Jesus Christ to our hearts that would remain dull and hard apart from the operation of His Holy Spirit.

At this time, we encour-age children remaining in the service to make use of the Children’s Sermon Worksheet to aid them in the teaching (available on the back table).

Lord’s SupperGod meets us not only in hearing the Word, but also in visible, tangible form – uniting us with himself spiritually by faith in Christ.

Lord’s Supper

Fencing the Table

Minister: What do you believe?

All: In this supper God declares to us that our sins have been com-pletely forgiven through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which he himself finished on the cross once for all.

Minister: He also declares to us that the Holy Spirit grafts us into Christ, who with his very body is now in heaven at the right hand of the Father, where he wants us to worship him. — from Heidelberg Catechism, Q&As 75, 80

All: Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. – Colossians 1:15-20

Minister: With these words our Lord commands all believers to eat this broken bread and to drink this cup in true faith and in the confident hope of his return in glory.

Words of Institution

Prayer for Those Searching for TruthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. If what you

claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be unafraid of the cost of following you as I

consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is clear, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen

Prayer for Those Desiring to Trust in Jesus Christ for the First TimeLord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before be-lieved. And I know that through you I am more loved & accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and providing forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and

Lord and desire to live a life of loving and serving you. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Note: Servers come for-ward. *Grape juice is available in the center of each wine tray and gluten-free bread on the right for those who desire such. Please hold the elements until all can partake together.

Community Groups The purpose of community groups at Christ the King is to provide a context for people to know the gospel of Jesus Christ more deeply and personally. We do this in all kinds of ways - by sharing meals and socializing together, studying together, praying together, and serving together, all with hope of living life in light of the gospel. We do this in a localized context, encouraging people to join the groups that are closest to where they live, with the hopes that we can love, pray for and serve our neighborhoods faithfully. Everyone is welcome to join a community group, whether you are a mem-ber of the Christ the King or not, a Christian or not. In our community groups, we are always striving to come to a fuller understanding of what it means to believe and live as a follower of Jesus Christ, so we look to our community groups as the perfect place to work out the implications of the gospel as we discuss our questions and struggles, and share our lives. For more information please contact the Church Office, [email protected].
