•1.4 billion people•1.1 billion of the 1.4 billion live along the eastern 1/3 where many are farmers. Live in 23 different provinces (next map).

•Languages

•Mandarin is the official language, but many different dialects (56), which makes communication almost impossible.

•People in China divide themselves in the following way:

•Northern Chinese believe they are healthier eaters, and are taller. Usually have lighter skin color.

•Southern Chinese are shorter, and not as healthy, it is said they would eat anything with four legs. Usually have a darker complexion.

The southern Chinese are closer to the equator, warmer climates, tan easier.

•Religions: (3 major ones)•Confucianism: taught people should be polite, honest, brave, and wise.

•Lao-zi is the founder of Confucianism…that is him in the next picture

•In China, the Confucian way has disappeared, but the Confucian approach to government and society retains a powerful hold on many people.

•Children were taught to obey their parents and respect their elders.

•Daoism (Taoism): helps people to understand the energy, or power, that connects all living things.

•Yin Yang: opposite forces

working together.

•Founded by Lao-tzu 6BCE…he is NOT believed to be just one person•Taos try to lead a good life and not harm others.

•Buddhism:

•Founded by Buddha, he was born a prince in India around 500BCE.

•Important belief is Life, death, and rebirth

•Worship in monasteries and/or temples

•Also many homes have a shrine.•Monks:

•Wear orange robes, sandals, and shave their heads

•Don’t need much (robe, sandals, razor, needle...repair the robe)

•Eat simple foods

•Kind to all creatures

•Culture:

•Arts- bronze bowls, jade jewelry, decorated silks, glazed pottery, fine porcelain, paintings, sculpture, calligraphy, & architecture.

•Paintings: SILK PAINTING

•Chinese paintings were based on theory

•If you were not a good calligrapher, you were not accepted as an artist.

•Brush work was VERY important

•Nature came first in a Chinese painting and humans second

You can see the calligraphy on the right which was a poem that went with the painting.

•Notice the red box in the upper left hand corner of the painting?

•This was a mark that was stamped onto the painting showing who owned the painting and during which dynasty. There could be multiple stamps, meaning more than one Emperor and Dynasty owned the painting.

•Now notice the Chinese calligraphy on the op of the painting…

•The owner of the painting (usually the Emperor), would comment on the painting, what he liked, disliked, etc!

The marks on this painting tell us that it was owned by many different people/emperors, with about 7 different markings (in red). They have also commented on this painting numerous times with all of the calligraphy in and around the red stamp/markings. This writing on the artwork does not de-value it like it may

in our own

society.

•More than 50,000 Chinese characters

•Characters represent words or ideas rather than letters that represent sounds. Some characters resemble the word they represent.

•Most Chinese people memorize 4,000 – 5,000 of these characters…you are considered literate if you can read 2,000-5,000 characters.

•Reading and writing Chinese is completely different from speaking Chinese

•Chinese is very easy to learn for those visual learners.

•The Pinyin system was developed to Romanize Standard Mandarin Chinese. Pinyin uses the alphabet to represent sounds in Standard Mandarin (Chinese).

•Spicy dishes with hot peppers

• Chinese eat simple dishes, which typically include vegetables with bits of meat, or seafood, soup, and rice or noodles.

•Observed by: Mainly East Asian civilizations.

•Type: Cultural, Religious (Buddhist and Taoist)

•Significance: The first day of the Chinese calendar (lunar calendar)

•2007 date: February 18

•2008 date: February 7

•2009 date: January 26

•Celebrations: Dragon dances/Lion dances, fireworks, family gathering, family meal, visiting friends and relatives ( 拜年 ), giving red envelopes, decorating with duilian ( 對联 ).
