Primates are grouped into three subsets: apes, monkeys

and hominids. Chimpanzees are apes. They have some

things in common with monkeys, but they can also be

    very diferent.

All primates have orward-acing eyes and highly exible

arms, legs and ngers. This body structure evolved as anadaptation or lie in the trees, since exible limbs and

grasping hands enable primates to move rom branch to

branch. Forward-acing eyes are also an adaptation or lie

in the trees: they provide excellent depth perception and

more accurate judgment o the distance between trees.

Unlike chimpanzees, monkeys cant swing rom branch to

branch like apes and humans can. Their shoulder bones

dont have the required structure or it. Instead, monkeys

run along the tops o branches and their skeletal

structure is similar to a cat, dog or other our-ooted

    animal.

Chimpanzees are much more like human beings in other

ways, too. They have the same basic body structure that

we do, possess a high level o intelligence and exhibit

much o the same social behavior that you see in humans.

Chimpanzees use simple tools and orm complex

societies. They also exhibit extensive language capability,

though they lack the necessary physiological adaptations

    to speak.

Scientists have taught chimpanzees to use sign language

and special computer keyboards and they have eveninvented their own words in these languages.

    African golden cats and eagles.

The green scales all over my bodyhelp to camouage me in bushes andsmall trees no more than 30 meterstall. I use my fangs and venom to catchanimals such as lizards, birds and mice.I have to avoid predators such as birdsand other snakes. My role is to keepanimal populations healthy.

    RED COLOBUS

My long ngers and exible arms andlegs make it easy for me to climb,

jump and balance at any level of therainforest. I spend most of my time intrees over 30 meters tall. I eat leaves, fruit and shoots. Seeds are spread inmy dung, which helps new plants grow.I am always watching out for eagles, chimpanzees and leopards.

    RED-CAPPED MANGABEY

My strong arms and legs allow me toeasily walk, jump and climb throughall levels of the rainforest. I prefer tospend my time in trees less than30 meters tall where I can nd fruit, seeds, nuts, leaves, mushrooms andinsects to eat. I avoid predators likeeagles and leopards by moving loweror higher into the trees.

    YELLOW-BACKED DUIKER

I am built for life in the rainforest. Myslender, arched body and long hindlegs help me move through the densebrush. I spend the night looking for food, especially fruit that has fallen to the

ground. The fruit seeds are passed in my

dung, so I help replant the rainforest. Itry to avoid predators such as leopards, crocodiles and large snakes.

I am the largest antelope in therainforest. My horns keep meprotected and my striped coat helpsme blend in with tall plants and bushes.I am a gardener of the rainforest. As Ieat leaves, owers and twigs, I trim backplants so that new ones can grow. I

just have to be careful of predatorslike leopards.

    TERMITES

We nd food and make our nests infallen logs and trees. As naturesrecyclers, we eat wood and returnimportant nutrients back to the soilin our waste. Our bodies are built fordigging, so we do a great job of mixing upsoil, adding fresh dirt to the rainforestoor. We try to avoid lizards, frogs, birdsand chimpanzees.

    BUTTERFLY

I y from ower to ower in search of asugary liquid called nectar. Along theway, I collect pollen and transfer it toother owers. This makes it possiblefor new owers to grow. When Im notying, I like to rest in sunny spots nearthe ground. My colors help me hide frompredators like birds, spiders and lizards.

    LEOPARD

My strong legs are perfect for climbingand my spotted coat helps camouageme in the thick rainforest brush. I look
