Through the medium of board sports CHILL aids young people to accomplish goals they never thought possible, while teaching some of the most important lessons of life: patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, integrity, and pride. For the past 5 years, the CHILL Foundation has partnered with local social service organisations such as the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Drug and Alcohol Services, the Morris Trust, and most recently the StreetWork Youth Service in 2007 and 2008.

Chill is a not-for-profit, learn to ride board sports program for at risk youth.

“This was one of the best achievements of my life”CHILL Participant

The Program Held in September of each year to take advantage of the more forgiving conditions and fewer people on the slopes, CHILL transports the participants and volunteers from Sydney to Jindabyne for a week of new challenges and good times. Aimed at young people aged 13 - 18, the Chill program provides the participants with the equipment, transportation, clothing, lift tickets and instruction required to experience a week of snowboarding in Australia.

The impact of being outside their usual circle of friends, outside their comfort zone and in an environment that can be uncomfortable and trying at times is

“Chill empowers these kids by including them in a world that they have previously seen as belonging to someone else... Chill gives them a peek at what is possible and provides them with a healthy, new perspective about themselves and their world”.Australian Chill Foundation Director, Tim Morris.

The Future

The Australian snow fields are not readily accessible to youth from across the country, so the expansion into skate and surf gives CHILL the potential to help young people across Australia. While each of these board sports offers unique challenges and programmatic themes, our standard remains the same throughout each board sport: We use the vehicle of board sports to deliver valuable life lessons and positive role models for these amazing and very deserving youth.

As Chill expands its surf and skate program, we will concentrate on delivering community-based programs. Programs which will be developed and designed to meet the unique needs and resources of the community whose youth we are working with.

Burton Snowboards founded Chill in 1995 as a way for the company to give back and share the sport of snowboarding with youth who would never otherwise have the chance to get out of the city and ride.Since 1995 Chill has touched the lives of over 12,000 troubled young people world wide. In 2009 alone CHILL will work with over 2,200 young people in 14 North

American cities, Sydney, Australia, and Innsbruck, Austria.

This type of approach allows Chill to find the partners in each community that want to build successful and sustainable programming for youth, participate in funding, and identify services that will be most beneficial to all parties involved. The Chill Foundation is always looking for new partner agencies that are interested in becoming a part of this growing program. Chill works in communities with agencies that serve youth who are challenged by a multitude of issues. Chill works with these young people to help build the skills needed to succeed in life. We establish long-term relationships with these partner agencies so they can use this intervention program as part of their everyday programming to try and improve the lives of each of these kids.

This unique program links board sports, social education and personal and community development.

The Chill Foundation needs the sponsorship of willing and generous donors to continue its successful snowboard program, and to expand the organisation into surf and skate so it is more accessible to at-risk youth all across Australia.
