What Does Kanaka Bar have?

A market currently facing….

These industries are “in hiatus” or hibernation…

• Mining

• Oil & Gas

• Agriculture

• Forestry

• Tourism

….a guarantee of negative ROI!

What is the Business Case when there is no market/demand for:

• commercial or retail store

• a café or gas station

• manufacturing plant or processing facility

• Other?

Page 5: Chief Patrick Michell, Kanaka Bar Indian Band …•1990 Water license applied for by Kanaka •2005 Development Agreement •2006 EPA for 50MW from BC Hydro •2009 Environmental

• No suicide in over 30 years

• 21% of population has gradated from high school in last 2 years

• Improved individual, family and community health

• Resurgences of pride and self esteem

Return of identity

Despite the previous slide….Kanaka is reversing the adverse affects of colonization.

Tangible

• Over a million dollars a year in own source revenues last year

• Now possibly the largest employer in the region

• Acquiring tenures off reserve including land, water licenses and mineral claims

• Self-performing projects whenever possible

Intangibles

What Does Kanaka Bar really have then?

A traditional territory ….

Land, resources and people….

Which, despite the best efforts of alot of people, survived colonization

….with 7000 + years of indigenous use!

Membership not hung up in the past and a willingness to do what our ancestors did in a modern way

“Use our Land and Resources sustainably”

• 7 Creeks with Year Round water

• Canada’s Hotspot

• Tree branches that point north.

Concept Stage

I was out and about Yukon last 2 days – sure looks like you sun, wind, water and land here too!

Page 8: Chief Patrick Michell, Kanaka Bar Indian Band …•1990 Water license applied for by Kanaka •2005 Development Agreement •2006 EPA for 50MW from BC Hydro •2009 Environmental

How are we harnessing these fuels?

Using the sun, wind, water and land to create electrons

Hydro: water is diverted and now under pressure, spins a turbine attached to a generator

Solar: the sun hits panels that create an electron flow

Wind: spins a fan (HAWT or VAWT) connected to a turbine.

Biomass: burning material to create steam that spins a turbine.

Geothermal: steam is brought from below the surface to spin a turbine.

For self-sufficiency and surplus

Electrons are used to power community offices, homes and other uses like:

• Security systems

• Greenhouses (final concept stage)

• Vehicles (feasibility)

Surplus electrons are then sold to BC Hydro for distribution to others.

Kanaka Bar & Solar

Security and light system (440w)

(August 2016)

• 200w panels not connected to grid

• Showcases ability for solar to be a “stand alone” power source for the community

• Can be expanded to existing infrastructure and incorporated into new builds too.

• $7300 payable to 3rd parties

Battery Storage – so runs at night

Kanaka Bar & Solar Options

More Projects?

Expand current projects?

• Scale up at current locations to generate more electrons than consumed.

• Incorporate during renovations and new builds

• Possible to include battery storage so that the power stays on during a distribution grid outage.

• Could develop new infrastructure completely off grid

GOAL: energy self-sufficient – community not dependent on 3rd parties

Is Renewable Energy Transferrable to Yukon?

Recent CBC Story

• 1 month in, Kugluktuk solar panels offset $2K in diesel fuel

• Green project expected to save $9K on $170K annual recreation centre power bill

Kanaka Bar and Wind

In Planning is….

a Rest Area on Highway 1 Is there a wind fuel source?

• For thousand of years, wind was used by Kanaka to preserve food (still is today).

• Wind requires a higher degree of planning

• Watershed locations are been investigated before first larger projects are started.

• Is it to be HAWT or VAWT?

• Powered by the wind, sun and micro hydro• Site to showcase renewable energy & Kanaka’s story• Site to create a “muscle memory” in passerby's • a “charging station” gets us on the internet• Thus creating a focal point for future Kanaka

retail/commercial/accommodation business

Page 23: Chief Patrick Michell, Kanaka Bar Indian Band …•1990 Water license applied for by Kanaka •2005 Development Agreement •2006 EPA for 50MW from BC Hydro •2009 Environmental

Kanaka Bar and….

Biomass (under investigation)

• Raised as part of the 5 Year CEDP –opportunity explored as part of overall food self-sufficiency goal

• Biomass can serve two purposes -heat our greenhouses while generating electrons.

• Biomass can also heat for our homes and heat can generate steam and electrons too.

Geothermal (under investigation)

• Opportunity and Technology applicable at Kanaka.

• Not under investigation (not needed when there is all that sun, wind, hydro and biomass opportunity.

Page 24: Chief Patrick Michell, Kanaka Bar Indian Band …•1990 Water license applied for by Kanaka •2005 Development Agreement •2006 EPA for 50MW from BC Hydro •2009 Environmental

Renewable Energy

• Built in-house Capacity at Kanaka• 30 years of learning for membership,

leadership & staff

• Creating own source revenue for:• Food and energy self-sufficiency goals• Employment• Investments

• assets, land and savings• Financial stability and certainty

• Reversing adverse affects of colonisation (the intangible things)

• New relationships (we did not do it alone)

CEBC 2014 Project Excellence Award

The technology works….(the sun shines, the wind blows, the water runs and the land remains)

….Powering….

Diverse and sustainable

• Capacity development

• Equipment, machinery and infrastructure acquisition

• Employment and Finances

• Reductions in dependency

….Self Determination

Kanaka Bar ancestors used the land and resource's to live and so are we.

Kanaka now decides (like the old days):• Where, when (pace), who, what

(type and scope) and why.

Land Use Plan Vison Statement (March 2015): a return to a self-sufficient, sustainable and vibrant community.

Some final thoughts

We did not do this alone!

• Time and Work

• Renewables can go big or small

• Diversify to deal with intermittent and fuel “challenges”

• What you say or do matters

• If Kanaka can do it, so can you!
