WHAT ARE THE FACTS

I am a chief chemical engineerDue to the harsh economic times and

fierce competition from other petroleum companies ,Mr.hoh has been asked to come up with cost

cutting measures. My role is to find out if the new manger ,Mr. hoh suggestion of

transporting fuel in gaseous state instead of liquid form and also to exclude a

chemical substances that gives a special smell to the fuel is feasible.

Page 6: Chemistry project

LEARNING ISSUESIs it more environmentally friendly

transport fuel in gaseous state instead of liquid form ?

how can you get rid of the smell?

What is the difference between natural gas and petroleum?

Does it help us save cost?

Does it increase the capacity of the fuel if it is transport in gaseous state instead of liquid form ?

LEARNING ISSUES

If the smell is remove does it affect the quality

Is it more convenient

Transporting in what form is better?

Will the sales of the company increase?

Are there more ways to save cost

ACTIONPLAN

Page 9: Chemistry project

Is it more environmentally friendly by transporting fuel in gaseous state instead of liquid form ?

:It is more environment friendly. It is largely because of the fact that it has only one carbon and hence, produces less emissions., thereby improving the quality of air.

Page 10: Chemistry project

HOW ?

Would we be able to get rid of the smell?

:YES

o If yes. How can we get rid of the smell?

:we could remove the odorants added. which is added to give it the smell.

Page 11: Chemistry project

If the smell is remove does it affect the quality?

:it will definitely affect the quality. Natural gas doesn’t have a smell. What you smell is an odorant added by gas companies.  Why do they do this?

Natural gas has no colour or odour, so it’s extremely hard for you to detect it.  Adding an odorant solves the problem.  Without the odorant when a gas leak happened it would not be detected easily .And a gas leak might cause death.

What can we do to make sure the quality of the fuel is not affected?

:do trial and error to make test if the quality is affected if we would to remove the smell.

Page 12: Chemistry project

We can choose to remove or not remove the smell.

We should not remove the smell without knowing the effect it will have.

The smell is to let people know the presence of the fuel .this to ensure when a gas leak happened people will be alerted.

Page 13: Chemistry project

What is the difference between natural gas and petroleum?

:Petroleum have two states of matter and those are

1. Gas(natural gas) 2. Liquid(petrol, diesel etc.)

Page 14: Chemistry project

1)Can it help us save cost when changing from liquid state to gaseous state?

2)What are the ways to save cost?

Liquid gas.

1)YES

Since when changing from liquid state to gaseous state requires heat energy. we could use a renewable source of energy e.g. heat energy from the sun to change petroleum from liquid state to gaseous state.

Change

Page 15: Chemistry project

Does it increase the capacity of the fuel if it is transport in gaseous state instead of liquid state ?

:yes

Transporting in what form is better? Liquid or gas

:it depends .

Will the form being transported affect its quality?

Explanation

Liquefied natural gas or LNG is natural gas that has been converted to liquid form for ease of storage or transport.Liquefied natural gas takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state. It is odorless, colorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive. Hazards include flammability, freezing and asphyxiaLNG achieves a higher reduction in volume than compressed natural gas (CNG) so that the energy density of LNG is 2.4 times heavier than that of CNG or 60% of that of diesel fuel.[1] This makes LNG cost efficient to transport over long distances where pipelines do not exist. Specially designed cryogenic sea vessels (LNG carriers) or cryogenic road tankers are used for its transport.

Page 17: Chemistry project

Will the sales of the company increase?

What can we do to make sure the sales of the company increase?

:advertise more before changing into gaseous state and do a market survey before changing into gaseous to see if the people could accept the changes.

Conclusion

We can conclude that the new manager suggestion is feasible. And his suggestion should be implemented because there are more pros than cons

Page 19: Chemistry project

Pros

Cost effective

Eco friendly

Convienient

odourless

Page 20: Chemistry project

Cons

We are unsure that the customers would like the gaseous fuel hence we do not know if it is profitable.

When the odorants have been removed and if a gas leak happened ,we may not be able to detect it which maybe dangerous.
