CHART CORRECTION

Large corrections

1. Check the Charts carried on board against the Index of Affected Charts in the NTM

2. Check which notices affect charts on board, and find the Notice in section II

3. Record the relevant NM number against the chart number in the NP 133A ( Chart Correction log )

4. Note that, at the bottom of each notice is a list of all charts affected by it, as well as the previous notice which affected that chart. This previous notice may be sometimes years old, but this information assists in confirming that the last correction(s) have been made on the chart in question.

4. Check that the previous notice has been applied to the chart (each chart has, at its bottom left, a list of corrections written on it by whoever corrected the chart. This information is also available in a separate Chart correction log that is maintained on board)

5. If any charts have not been updated, they must be corrected to the previous notice before the current notice is applied.

6. Tracings are used to correct charts, when available.

5. Corrections are made in indelible magenta ink, ensuring that standard symbols are used, that the correction is made neatly and accurately and does not obscure other information on the chart.

6. After correction, an entry is made on the bottom left of the chart

7. Cross the appropriate NM number through in pencil in NP 133A as you complete each update.

NOTICES TO MARINERS — EXPLANATION OF TERMS

(i) INSERT is used for the insertion of all new data or, together with the DELETE command (see v. below), when a feature has moved position sufficiently that the MOVE command (see iv. below) is not appropriate. For example: Delete feature and Insert in a different position.

(ii) AMEND is used when a feature remains in its existing charted position but has a change of characteristic, for example:

Amend light to, Fl.3s25m10M 32°36´·90S., 60°54´·18E.

When inserting a new symbol, place it on the exact position given in the NM.

If there isn’t room, draw a ‘replacement symbol' (see diagram).

NOTICES TO MARINERS — EXPLANATION OF TERMS

(iii) SUBSTITUTE is used when one feature replaces an existing feature and the position remains as charted. The new feature is always shown first, for example:

Substitute F for T (where F is the new feature)

(iv) MOVE is used for features whose characteristics or descriptions remain unchanged, but they are to be moved small distances, for example:

Move starboard-hand conical buoy from: 56°00´·62N., 4°46´·47W.

to: 56°00´·92N., 4°46´·59W.

Temporary corrections: eg, a lighthouse is temporarily unlit.

Preliminary corrections: eg A jetty is being extended in a harbour. Although the entire length is not yet extended, works are in progress. Instead of a large correction, a preliminary notice may be sent, to be made permanent (or large) after the construction is complete.

Navigational warnings: eg, a Navy will be using a certain area for firing practice on a particular date and time. Obviously ships must be aware of this and avoid the area.

Available through :

1. Notices to mariners2. By VHF radio, warnings transmitted by shore based radio

stations as voice on the internationally approved frequencies which ships must monitor 24 hrs a day.

3. By Navtex receivers, or navigational telex4. Through satellite communications and others.

The Second Officer will then correct the appropriate chart (if in use) in pencil. This is because, unlike large corrections that are made in ink, these small corrections are temporary in nature and only applicable for a brief period of time.

Small corrections

These mainly consist of Temporary and Preliminary Notices (also called T and P notices) and Navigational warnings (nav warnings)

The procedure for small corrections is as follows:

1. Sections II and III (See above) are detached from the NM and file. These give a list of T and P notices and Nav warnings still in force.

Page 18: Chart Correction

CHART CORRECTION

2.Charts on board and in use in the present voyage are corrected for these notices. The correction is made in pencil. This is because these notices are transient and will change or vanish.

3.While on the passage, other T, P notices and Nav Warnings may be received on Navtex, VHF etc. Charts in use will be corrected for these as the information comes in.

Cumulative List of Admiralty Notices to Mariners

The Cumulative List of Admiralty Notices to Mariners (NP234 Part A or B) assists users who wish to identify outstanding NMs and audit trails for a particular chart or charts. The list is published annually, with Part A in January and Part B in June.

Contains the numbers of all Notices affecting all the charts that exist for the last 2 years. Latest edition dates of each chart are marked.

The mariner can then, at a quick glance, check that:

1.He has the latest edition of each chart on board (new editions of charts are published regularly, just like books. When this happens, the older editions are defunct and must be replaced)

2.Confirm that all corrections on board have been made and marked on either the chart itself, or in the separate chart correction log.

3.Note that the Cumulative NM does not give any details of the small corrections like T/P notices and Nav warnings.

ANNUAL SUMMARY

Annual Summary of Admiralty Notices to Mariners (NP247)

To supplement Weekly NMs, the UKHO produces an Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners (NP247). This publication contains the Annual Statutory Notices to Mariners Numbers 1-26, a summary of Temporary and Preliminary Notices to Mariners still in force at the start of the year, and a Cumulative Summary of Amendments to Admiralty Sailing Directions.

The paper version of the Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners is published annually in January, and copies are available by subscription from Admiralty Distributors

When a light is affected by a notice its Light List number is quoted. The detailed amendment to the List of Lights isgiven in Section V and may be published in an earlier edition than the chart-updating notice.

The entire entry for each light amended will be printed (including minor changes) and an asterisk (*) will denote which column contains an amendment.

In the case of a new light, or where a new sequence is added below the main light, an asterisk (*) will appear under all columns. All Section V entries are intended to be cut out and pasted into the book.

When a chart-updating notice is issued for information that is also included within Admiralty List of Radio Signals, theappropriate volume reference number is quoted, followed in parentheses by the number of the Weekly Edition containing (in Section VI) the corresponding amendment to the service details.

The amendments in Section VI should be cut out and pasted into the appropriate volumes.

Current editions of Sailing Directions

Amendments to Admiralty Sailing Directions are always applied to the most recent edition of the volume in use. Details of the most recent edition of any particular volume can be established by consulting:1.NP 131 Admiralty Chart Catalogue, published annually in December.2.Part 1 of ANNUAL SUMMARY OF ADMIRALTY NOTICES TO MARINERS - AMENDMENTS TO SAILING DIRECTIONS, published annually in January.3.NP 234 Cumulative List of Admiralty Notices to Mariners, published 6 monthly in January and June.

Action on receipt of a volume of Admiralty Sailing Directions.

(1) Check that the most recent Edition of the volume, and its Supplement where relevant, are held.

(2) Check that the amendments at Part II of Amendments to Admiralty Sailing Directions have been applied.(3) Check that all amendments published at Section IV of Admiralty of Notices to Mariners subsequent to the publication of this volume have been applied, using the most recent quarterly check-list at Section IB of the Weekly Edition, and the most recent edition of NP 234 ( Cumulative list )

Where it is found that the most up to date information is not held, the most recent editions of all Admiralty publications can be obtained from Admiralty Distributors, and back copies of Admiralty Notices to Mariners can also be downloaded from the UKHO website.

Those in force at the end of the year are reprinted in the Annual Summary of Admiralty Notices to Mariners Part 2 (NP 247(2)). A list of amendments in force is published in Section IV of the Weekly Edition quarterly.

For volumes of Sailing Directions maintained by Continuous Revision, amendments may be cut out and pasted/corrected directly in to the book.

Alternatively, and for the remaining volumes of Sailing Directions maintained by Supplement (Currently NPs 4, 10, 21, 57B, 58A, 58B and 72), it is recommended that amendments are kept in a file with the latest list of amendments in force on top.
