SCULPTURES BY DR. BOB KRAUSEAn exhibit of mixed-media artwork, primarily

ceramic and wood sculptures, by the late artist Dr. Robert “Bob” Krause of San Dimas will be displayed in the main lobby of the library. Dr. Krause won many awards for his beautiful artwork. His sculptures and other works will be on display from Wednesday, September 4 through the end of October.

TRAVELS TO THE EASTA collection of pastel paintings and charcoal

drawings by local artist Ron Schrantz are on display in the local history room through the month of September. The paintings and drawings were inspired by his travels to China, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan.

LEGO CLUBChildren will build, create and share their very own

LEGO creations based on a chosen theme. The library will provide the LEGO and you provide the imagination! Space is limited to 20 participants.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS/ SUGAR SKULLS

Children will illustrate colorful calaveras de azucar, or sugar skulls. Sugar skulls are associated with the Day of the Dead, a festive Mexican celebration honoring the be-loved deceased. Vibrant colors will highlight these stylized skulls. The fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given. Seating is limited to 20 participants.

FAMILY NIGHT: THREE LITTLE PIGS PUPPET SHOW

While two little pigs are content to take the easy route, their pigheadedness could spell trouble when the Big Bad Wolf comes knocking. Will the third little pig, who has a commitment to excellence, have the inventiveness to save the day? This 45-minute puppet show is fun for the entire family.

A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES: “TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT” (1944)

Did you know “To Have and Have Not” marked Lauren Bacall’s debut at the age of 19, and she had never acted before? Or that Humphrey Bogart and Bacall fell in love during the shoot and at the end of filming got mar-ried? Learn about these curious facts and more as Theo Siegel discusses the making of “To Have and Have Not,” followed by a screening of this classic film. This film is unrated and has a running time of 100 minutes.

CHILDREN’S ART & SHORT STORY CONTESTS

The Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the 17th Annual Art Contest for children in grades K-6 and a Short Story Contest for children in grades 3-6. “My Very Own Circus” is the theme for the art contest and “Un-usual Class Assignment” is the theme for the short story contest. Participants must have a valid Cerritos Library card. The deadline to turn in all entries is Friday, Octo-ber 18 before 9 p.m.

Design a picture about “My Very Own Circus.” Artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and unmounted. Only one art entry is allowed per child.

Short Stories about an “Unusual Class Assignment” must be original, using no more than 500 words and preferably typed on white letter-sized paper. Only one short story entry is allowed per child.

Application forms are available at the Children’s Help Desk and on the Library’s website. Winners will receive gift certificates of $20, $15 and $10 from Barnes & Noble at a special reception. For more information, contact Librarian Eric Cardoso at (562) 916-1343.

HOMEWORK HELPAn after-school homework help program is offered

for Cerritos resident students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Students should bring their homework and a book to read or their library card to check out reading mate-rial. A parent or a designated individual is required to sign students in and out of class. Space is limited to 12 participants.
